I guess I'm reviving this thread, but I'm traveling to England next month, and my biggest hesitance about going was whether I'd be lugging a bag of snacks around the country just to keep myself fed. From what I've read, it looks like I won't have to (yay!) Glad to hear that it's probably no worse than trying to eat gluten free while traveling in Canada or...

I'll just throw in my 2 cents here: I've been in denial about issues with dairy for probably a couple years (since going gluten free), probably because I never would have expected to have the symptoms I do because of it (sinus congestion/pain, headache, mild vertigo, some nausea but not much in the stomach department). Recently I've tried cutting down...

ARCHIVED Casein Or Lactose Intolerance?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thinking its definitely casein. Just clued in that casein being similar to gluten also means it could be causing some intestinal damage. It hasn't gotten as bad as before I went gluten-free, but I have lost a lot of weight over the past several months (though i'm clinging to the hope that I'm eating right and getting exercise and won't suddenly gain it back... -
ARCHIVED Casein Or Lactose Intolerance?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks I'm also thinking it's casein more likely than lactose. It's a bit like getting glutened but without the bloating, and I get the head-fogginess almost immediately. I think I will try an elimination diet for a few weeks and see how it goes. I've also cut back on salt significantly, since it gets my dizziness going too. I've heard both sides... -
Hi All Lately, I've been having trouble when I have milk. Not so much stomach-wise other than a bit of nausea, but dizziness, headache, pressure in my sinuses, general brain fog. I've been dealing with mild vertigo (non-vestibular) and milk tends to make it worse. Because of that, I've started cutting cow's milk out of my diet as much as possible. Instead...

ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
woo, lots of info here, and hopefully helping many readers! Another update: I got the results from my balance test. According to the text, the amount of dizziness caused by the water-in-ear test was the same on both sides, and any non-visual test was normal as well, so that pretty well rules out a vestibular problem. So, it's not my ear, and not Meniere... -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow! Nice to see this thread has continued in my absence. I was going to give an update: I've seen the ENT specialist and gotten a few tests done since I posted last. My hearing test was normal. I went for an MRI which ruled out any growth on my ear that could be causing the tinnitus (which is same as always. I just ignore it). I went for balance testing... -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks everyone for the input. I just looked up Ataxia, and I don't think that's what I've got (unless its the very early stages). My coordination is fine, just my balance is off a little due to the vertigo. However, I do feel that something in my diet is making the vertigo worse. (for example, I'm just eating lunch, which is leftover biryani from a... -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
Pegleg84 posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi This may or may not be linked to my celiac, but I have had tinnitus in 1 ear for over six months, and an increased feeling of unsteadiness (mild vertigo, like being on a boat). I've had some sinus problems as well, probably city-induced allergies, that I've mostly dealth with and still the dizziness. I'm looking into the causes of this (inner ear... -
ARCHIVED Stress And The Celiac
Pegleg84 replied to 2wheels4eyes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I totally know what you mean, and am going through a bit of the same thing the past few days. I had some sweet potato fries at a restaurant on thursday, not thinking things through of course, and got some cross contamination glutening. Felt nauseous and crappy for a few hours. Anyway, Friday I was more or less fine, but saturday and sunday I've been nauseous... -
Anger, Quick Temper, Depression
Pegleg84 replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi I've been gluten free for about 3 months now, and one of my worst symptoms was anxiety and depression. Since I've been on the diet, I'm doing great, feeling very positive and energetic, whereas the few times I've been noticeably glutened, its the anxiety that hits me the worst, like a physical tension and sudden bursts of emotion. I've been doing so... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Bread-in-a-bowl Microwaveable Recipes
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The italian bun recipe sounds delicious! For the regular recipe, I've been substituting the cocoa powder for cinnamon, and using brown rice flour. I also tried putting raisins in it. To me its like a muffin or something. however, I find it comes out a little dry if you don't want to use it for a hamburger bun type thing. could you add a little oil or margarine... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Bread-in-a-bowl Microwaveable Recipes
Pegleg84 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay, someone recently posted an excellent recipe for a Bun in a Bowl, a recipe for a single "bun" sized bread that you can mix up in a microwave safe dish and nuke for a couple minutes. I tried the recipe this morning, and it was amazing! The best gluten-free thing I've had in ages! Now I see that there are many variations cropping up. These are great for... -
ARCHIVED Essential gluten-free Baking Supplies?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yep, it is. I totally bought too much potato flour. anyone know a good recipe for it? I just finally mixed up some bread from a gluten-free flour mix I bought when I first moved. It`s rising right now. I hope it turns out. -
ARCHIVED Essential gluten-free Baking Supplies?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yeah, I got the bulk stuff fully conscious of the potential of CC. I even didn't get a couple things there cause they were dangerously close to the regular flour. However, I'm willing to take the risk, and once I've baked a couple things and know what I will actually use, I'll likely buy the bob's stuff. And if I don't have any problems, yey for me. oh... -
ARCHIVED Essential gluten-free Baking Supplies?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for the wonderful list of links! I'm almost prepared to make gluten free muffins. Definitely not as easy as picking up a bag of flour. Thankfully, I have now had a few weeks to plunder the many bulk natural food stores in Kensington market in toronto, and found a great place at st lawrence market with super cheap bulk flours, so my collection is starting... -
ARCHIVED Money Saving Gluten Free Tips
Pegleg84 replied to glutenfreejenny's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Jenny I'm also a poor student adjusting to living gluten free. I eat a lot of fresh produce, and a lot of rice. But gluten-free baking is definitely an investment. However, I'm finding that once you go out and spend the money on that bag of rice flour and gluten-free oats and all the other little essentials, you probably won't have to get any more of... -
ARCHIVED Easy Recipe For gluten-free Muffins?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks everyone! This is such a huge help! Right now I'm trying to compile all the ingredients i need to make my own flour mixes and get down to some serious baking. I'll probably continue this thread with questions once I try some of these out thanks again Peggy -
ARCHIVED Easy Recipe For gluten-free Muffins?
Pegleg84 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi I'm new to the gluten-free baking thing, and looking for some good tried-and-true recipes. I'd really like to find a good muffin recipe, preferably with a limited range of flours (can't afford to buy and store every last one). I like fruit and spiced stuff, and have no other allergies, though i'm not crazy about bean flours. any suggestions? Thanks... -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker New gluten-free Line
Pegleg84 replied to Tica's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
we used Betty Crocker frosting on my bday cake this year. It's totally gluten free already. Do you know if the new gluten-free line will be available in Canada right away. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. mmm... gluten-free brownies.... I just hope a pack doesn't cost a fortune. Under 5$ would be wonderful -
ARCHIVED Rice Pasta Woes
Pegleg84 replied to sarahzona's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
yeah, definitely have to be careful not to overcook it. You want it on the firm side of al dente, i guess. For rinsing, i recommend putting the pasta in a collander, hold it over the pot (in the sink of course), and run water over the pasta and into the pot, emptying it when it gets full. Once the water runs clear, it should be good. good luck with your... -

Thanks so much for the suggestions I've been making a list of things I should have so I can shop around for them. Next thing I need to do is get some easy recipes if anyone has anything else to add, please keep it coming Peggy -
ARCHIVED How Do You Tell If You've Been Glutened?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks guys an update from last night. I don't think the D was related to the beans, as I had more for lunch and am doing fine so far. Might have been my cold meds, or i'm developing an intolerance to soy... ack. so much to figure out. I'd still like to know more about food intolerances, how you can tell what it is that's bothering you, and also whether... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms When First Going gluten-free
Pegleg84 replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think that's a good theory. Our bodies are like, woah! what do I do with all this stuff? I felt kind of icky for the first few weeks, but still so much better than before. Now, over a month in, i'm starting to notice new food intolerances popping up (which is really annoying at the moment cause i've had a bad cold all week and can't tell what's food related... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Tell If You've Been Glutened?
Pegleg84 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi everyone Over 1 month in and I've been doing pretty well. However, I'm starting to have more problems again, mild bloating and the occasional tummyache. Tonight I'm having really bad D - worse than its been in a loong time, since mostly i've been constipated. I've been extremely careful about gluten and (aside from misreading the label on a pringles...
