  1. I know there working on clinical trials for a kind of "lactaid" for gluten - as in you could take it and maybe be able to handle a very small amount of gluten on occassion, or just protect yourself from CC when eating out. If they do manage to figure that out, and it works, and it's safe, then I'd take advantage of it on occassion. No way will there ever...
  2. Living with people is tough, relatives or roommates, but living on your own without enough funds to support yourself easily is also tough. if the most financially sound option for you right now is to stay put at home (if there aren't issues other than gluten driving you out of the house. I know I can't spend more than a week with my parents without going...
  3. Hi Wendy Does sesame give you problems? If not, then whole grain is probably fine. If yes, then I suppose having it as a paste might make it easier to digest (I have similar problems with things like quinoa. I can't handle the whole grain but quinoa flour is fine). I would buy some tahini (or even better, some hummus) first and see how that treats you...
  4. Panic is normal. I think we all had a bit of that. Being gluten free and vegetarian should not be much trouble. As long as you can still handle dairy and soy. As someone mentioned, be especially careful of veggie "meats" and such, as they often will have gluten as filler, but tofu can replace most of that. (one reason why I don't Even though it's more expensive...
  5. If distilled grain spirits weren't gluten free, then I'd be in some serious trouble... All distilled alcohols are gluten free. However, some extremely super sensitive people do have trouble and avoid them. however, since you're just starting out gluten-free and don't know yet, then it won't hurt to try. If you want to be safe, stick to rum, tequila and...
  6. I haven't stepped foot into a Tim's in a few years, and have weaned myself off Tim's coffee. The cream should be fine, as long as you're ok with milk. However, keep in mind that Tim Hortons is filled with gluteny things and there's a reasonable chance of cross contamination. I can't stand to go in anymore. It's depressing... So, you can still have your...
  7. Oh! yes, I did read the nettle tea thread, and meant to go get some to try. I'll give it a shot. I will hopefully have a proper GI in the near future (I have my referral anyway, still have to book an apt) and see what he/she says about it. It's flared up quite a bit the past week or so (also due to mild glutenings/milk consumption, and more alcohol than...
  8. I might just have to. New cutting board/collander/measuring cups for xmas next year or something, or early birthday gift for when I'm home in the summer. They've got the toaster issue covered (4-slice toaster, 2 slices dedicated to gluten-free). Anyway, hopefully she just isn't as sensitive as I am (and I seem to be getting more sensitive), but I do wonder...
  9. Hey, So I appear to have survived the holidays more or less. Aside from eating a few too many buttery treats (best gluten-free apple pie ever!), and accidentally eating a bit of stuffing (hey bro, is this gluten-free. Sure it is. Oh, this tastes like stuffing. Yeah, of course there's stuffing. Ergh...) Feeling sluggish today (could be lack of sleep) but...
  10. Hi Guys Not sure if this is the best place for this question, but i'll give it a shot. So, I got my endoscopy test results back a couple weeks ago. No sign of gluten damage, obviously, but the doctor did notice some mild gastritis. Makes sense, since I've been having pains/problems with other foods. I'd been having a good stomach week when the scope...
  11. As others have said, you might be having too much of the same things, and just need to rotate your foods a bit more. Ethical issues and personal choice aside, if you haven't eaten meat growing up, then introducing it now is probably not a good idea. Or if you do, make sure it's a very small amount (chicken or fish) at first and take good digestive enzymes...
  12. I always worry about cookie crumbs. I help with tea at my meditation centre, and try to be very careful when handling the cookies and other gluteny things, wash hands afterwards, etc, but I always worry that something bad might happen (obviously not worried enough to stop helping out though). If you got that sick just from cookie crumbs, then indeed, for...
  13. Thanks guys. I'm sure we'll both be just fine (no harder than here, certainly), but wanted to see if anyone had an idea off the top of their heads. I found foods were much better labeled in the UK than here, and restaurants seem to be more up on their gluten-free knowledge. Never had a problem. What will be really hard to avoid is butter and cheese, but...
  14. It gets better! I had the Maple Stout on friday. very very nice. But the bar was also doing samples of 3 beers (3!) from Brasseurs Sans Gluten (BSG) from Montreal. They were all excellent! They must sell all over the place in Quebec, and hopefully (fingers crossed) will get picked up by the LCBO soon. I have LCBO insider info (my man is the beer guy at...
  15. Burdee, yep, I've had Daiya. It's ok but just not the same. I've used it for pizza and mac-and-cheese(like substance), but mostly it's gone untouched in my fridge. However, as an experiement, (and also to make sure I won't keel over in the UK next week, where gluten-free is easy, but dairy free is pointless) I had a few small pieces of hard, aged cheese...
  16. Hey all So I'm headed back to the UK in just over a week. yay! We're only in London for 1 night, but would love to go somewhere nice for dinner with good gluten free and vegetarian options (gluten-free for me, veg for him). One possibility is Mildred, but if anyone knows a nice, reasonably priced place in central London, let me know. Also, any good...
  17. I (I think) don't have ataxia either, but hearing these experiences is very insightful. It's clear that your friend should seriously try the GFD. It's so sad that people refuse to try it because they think it's "too hard". Having all control of your body and your life slip away is hard! Ataxia is one of those things I've always wondered about but never...
  18. Thanks for checking that out! (re: UK levels). I'm headed to the UK in less than 2 weeks (can't wait! Gluten free jaffa cakes here I come!) and that kind of freaked me out. Mr Glutenhead should be some kind of superhero (or sidekick...)
  19. Hmm, I have never even thought of this, or heard anyone else mention it. I honestly wouldn't worry, but for piece of mind you could schedule a cleaning with the dentist. Make sure when you go, that they only use gluten free cleaning pastes and such. Someone else might have another idea though Welcome to the forum! hope we can be of help.
  20. This article is sketchy, not so much because it might be giving skewed information and trying to sell us something in the end, but that if someone read it the wrong way, it seems to say: The gluten free diet doesn't work! There should at least be reinforcement right from the beginning the the GFD is absolutely neccessary, but it's not always enough. The...
  21. Wow, I love when I accidentally start something. I mentioned malt vinegar because, well, you're not going to clean with it, and it's the only vinegar that is considered (by most of us) to be unsafe. Good to know about the Ecover! If I ever get any of their dishsoap, I'll check the ingredients first. We might have to start a thread about this barley malt...
  22. I cut out dairy last year after struggling with sinus problems and dizziness. After all the inner-ear tests came back clear and the doctor looked at me like I was nuts, I read that salt and dairy can contribute to sinus problems, so I cut back on salt, then cut out milk (well, milk, then ice cream, then yogurt, then cheese ---i miss cheeeeese!--- and finally...
  23. Soy is a real bugger. I get lightheaded and nauseous, and the symptoms usually hit me quite shortly after eating, unlike gluten that takes a while to kick in. I can probably handle small amounts of soy lecthin if I take a digestive enzyme with it, but i've been doing my best to avoid it completely. I miss tofu thought. My bf is vegetarian, so finding/making...
  24. Ok, so I don't want to sound like a spokesperson or anything, but I am just so pleased! I'm a beer lover. I miss it. I've found a tolerable gluten-free beer in Ontario (Nicklebrook Gluten Free) that is my go-to, and have been lucky enough to try some good ones from the US and abroad (brought back by my dear beer mule boyfriend), but you can't imagine how...
  25. Hi Bethany Welcome to the forum! You're still early days yet, your gut is still healing and readjusting to its new conditions. I think a lot of us went through a bit of that. Digestive enzymes and probiotics are definitely a good idea. They can help with digestion until your gut is back in shape. Try cutting out dairy, as suggested. It's not a bad idea...
