ARCHIVED Strangest - But Positive - Effects Of The gluten-free Diet?
Pegleg84 replied to ButterflyChaser's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My nails used to be weak and brittle and ridgy and awful. Now they're tough and healthy. (though I still can't be bothere to do anything with them). This change was actually my one bit of proof that I'm Celiac I also enjoy being a cheap drunk. I can nurse that one can of gluten-free beer all night long... -

ARCHIVED White Bread Really Isn't "wheat", Right?
Pegleg84 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I remember reading/hearing something about this recently, and it really got me thinking that for churches (primarily Catholic) who insist that there must be wheat in the bread in order to meet religious standards, it must be a big problem for believers who want to participate in a sacred ritual, but don't want to get sick! Allegedly some curches have "low... -
Unless they like to eat pizza in bed... no. just mouth to gluteny-mouth contact.

I used to date a smoker, and insisted that he brush his teeth after smoking, because it's just gross. Therefore it only makes sense that someone would be courteous enough to brush their teeth and get rid of stuff that could potentially harm their significant other. This said, I can't say I've ever gotten glutened from a kiss. My man is conscious of the...

ARCHIVED What's Soy Doing In My F*ing Tea!?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm just glad I noticed this BEFORE I made the tea. And bwahahahaha about the probiotic (singular). so pointless! Why do probiotics have to be in everything these days. Such a gimmick... It's just frustrating because it means one more thing that I can't have without thinking about it first (if you can't read the label, don't eat/drink it). -

ARCHIVED Living Normally While Battling Celiac Is Like:
Pegleg84 replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's really no such thing as "normal" in my mind, but there's feeling good and in control, and that was definitely not the situation when I first went gluten-free. Before going on the diet, it was like drowning in a really stagnant pond, occasionally getting to come up for air. After going gluten-free, it was like I could swim again. It;s still tough... -

ARCHIVED What's Soy Doing In My F*ing Tea!?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
yeah, it's definitely for the flavoured teas. Good ol traditional black teas and such really should be fine. This all means I'll be declining any tea that sounds "flavoury", and asking lots of questions at tea shops. My favourite teas are earl grey, pur'eh, and roibos, so sticking to unflavoured types should do the trick. Probiotics in tea? That does sound... -
There is no such thing as a "trendy" disease. I know some people who are trying out the gluten-free diet to see if it makes a difference in their health, but they usually drop it after a few weeks if nothing significant happens. But if you're going to do the gluten-free diet, you'd better go all the way. I was sitting in a coffee shop one day and a girl ordered...

ARCHIVED What's Soy Doing In My F*ing Tea!?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
At home I drink loose leaf, but I don't have a tea ball at work (am going to remedy that), and if I'm out and want a cup there's no knowing what you'll end up with. So, that explains why I sometimes feel a little odd after drinking some. Now if I'm out I'll stick to as whole/plain as possible, or ask to see the box. I got this particular tea because, why... -
So, I'm chilly, and went to make a cup of some nice blackcurrant Stash tea I got a while ago, and took a glance at the ingredients, and low and behold! Contains: soy. WHAAAT?? Why the hell is there soy in f*ing tea?! Well, now that it's donated to the communal office tea, who else has noticed soy as an ingredient in teas (or other unusual things), and what...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer: How Do We Know It Is Safe
Pegleg84 replied to Cmccartn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've never had any trouble with gluten-free beer (but don't touch the mysterious "gluten removed" stuff. That's just sketchy). If you're worried about breweries that also make regular beer, there are several exclusively gluten-free breweries out there, and you can always contact the brewery to find out what their methods are, and whether they use dedicated... -
I've got them. I don't think it has anything to do with Celiac in particular. "Floaters" are bits of detached tissue floating around in your eye. If they suddenly show up, or get worse, you should see a doctor/optometrist as soon as you can, since it could be a sign of something more serious like a detached retina. I might notice them more when I've been...

ARCHIVED Is Gluten Causing Me Permanent Damage?
Pegleg84 replied to Finding Answers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Going gluten free can be overwhelming, but if you're already "gluten light" and feeling so much better, then it would be worth it to go fully gluten free. As much as it might be useful to get tested, if pain and problems return just from a few bites of really gluteny things, then it might not be the best thing for your health. However, that might mean that... -
I don't get migraines, but it's like instant brain-fog, sometimes just mild dizziness and nausea, sometimes a headache. It really affects my sinuses. I don't usually get cramping, but often turns into bad C and/or D (yes, both at once sometimes. Sounds wrong, but it happens) Like gluten, it causes different reactions in everyone.
 -
It's definitely a double-sided issue. I also have problems with those who eat gluten free, but don't take it seriously. If they are doing it to help their health, then it should be all or nothing. At the same time, the level of awareness is so much better than it was even couple years ago. I can usually say "gluten-free" and they have some idea what I'm...

ARCHIVED Low Calcium (After A Year Of No Dairy)
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've slacked off in my CA supplement taking, but am still feeling a lot better. Might have just needed a boost. Also, trying to remember ot take my Vitamin D and occasionally take B12 supplement. I do eat meat, and nuts, and kale, and many other things that help things out naturally. AnnJay, check your local health food/supplements store, if you have... -

ARCHIVED Back On Track (And What Next?)
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks guys I might be brave enough to attempt quinoa again, and maybe a bite of cheese, but soy and I will never be friends again. Ever. My man and I went out for dinner on Saturday and they were pretty accomodating, though I had to send my curry back when it came out with the chapati stuck in it. It took sufficiently enough time to come back out,... -
Hi All Just wanted to check in with an "experiment" of mine. I wreacked havoc on my gut over the holidays (ccd, butter, horrible NYE sickness, ergh), and decided that in order to heal, I had to not take any risks. So, I have cooked every last one of my meals at home for over 3 weeks, and only one meal out in the past 4 weeks at least (which my gut didn...

ARCHIVED A Little Worried
Pegleg84 replied to Macmuireadhaigh's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Digestive enzymes! I was having a lot of trouble with this as well recently, (and pain and all the other leaky gut fun) and started taking digestive enzymes and huge difference! I still have trouble digesting some things, but as long as I take enzymes with every meal, it's going good. A few other questions though: are you Celiac? eating a gluten-free diet... -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else React To Salt/sodium?
Pegleg84 replied to gluten-is-kryptonite's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hey I also have trouble with too much salt. It affects my sinuses, therefore causing pressure in my head, brain fog, dizziness, my ear feels like it's full of fluid. No fun. A couple years ago I was sure I was having trouble with my inner ear, went through a million tests, but all came back normal. So I looked at my diet. Salt and dairy can affect sinus... -

ARCHIVED How To Navigate Living In Asia - Gluten Free
Pegleg84 replied to sabin112's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I lived in Japan for a year pre-diagnosis, and I've always wanted to go back. Being able to manage the diet is the one thing that's keeping me away (I'm soy intolerand now too!) However, if you've lived there a while and have a decent grasp of the language, it should be easier to at least navigate the supermarket (I can just imagine myself spending 2 hours... -

ARCHIVED Vomiting Phobia And Glutening?
Pegleg84 replied to nostalgic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also have a "fear" of vomiting, in that i hate it and avoid doing it at all costs. Thankfully, for someone who gets nauseous on a regular basis, I've got a pretty strong stomach. So, if you've never vomited because of gluten, then unless your stomach really does a bad flip, you'll probably be fine in that department. Nauseous, maybe (ginger is your best... -

ARCHIVED Dairy Free Questions...
Pegleg84 replied to Christine0125's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd say do a trial first: avoid as much dairy as possible for a couple weeks and see if it makes a difference. If no, then it might be something else. If yes, try reintroducing a few things like a little cheese or yogurt and see how you feel. If it it makes you feel like crud, then I'd say you've got yourself a dairy problem. I'm also casein intolerant... -
The alcohol is probably bothering you more right now because your gut is trying to heal. Like others have said, I'd lay off it for a few months then see how it goes. Many celiacs do end up having problems with alcohol in general though, or sulphite allergies, etc. I know what you mean about "skipping the drunk stage". I was HORRIBLY sick on NYE as well...
