  1. There's a couple small Canadian companies whose stuff I can get at some health food stores, but you would have to see what's available at your local shops. I use Enjoy Life for chocolate chips. And yeah, soy hits me faster/harder than gluten often, so even trace amounts can bother me.
  2. Jumping back in... 4-years gluten-free as of this week! Onward and upward, even if there are bumps in the road. Gemini, I definitely know your frustration. My sister also doesn't stick to her diet nearly as well as she should (which worries me, but it's her health), and even my mother who deems herself a bit of an expert probably gets glutened more...
  3. GottaSki, that's awesome! I will hold out hope, then. It would be nice not to have to worry about getting soyed, even if I can't go back to eating tofu. In the meantime, it's expensive handmade organic fair trade dairy/soy/gluten free chocolate for me... Oh, I also put some raw cocoa nibs in my cereal/gluten-free oats in the morning. Very good for you...
  4. You can make your own hot chocolate with cocoa powder. Just add sugar and milk (I use almond milk. I've also had some very good hot chocolate with coconut milk). Butterfly, my soy reactions have definitely gotten worse. I'm pretty sure I got soyed a couple weeks ago (oil?) and it took several days to settle down. Even tiny bits of lecthin will send my...
  5. Ever since my mom (also celiac) accidentally bought non-gluten-free bread which we happily ate daily for over a week until I finally read the label... I don't take chances (now especially when I'm at my parents' house!) Now that I also can't do soy, I'm uber paranoid and read everything 3 times over... except when I don't, like the ingredients on a box of...
  6. Looking at your diet, there's a few things that scream potential CC: worceshire sauce? You sure that was gluten-free? It usually isn't. Are any of the snacks made on the same lines or could have hidden gluten? (I don't think all pop-chips are gluten-free) It might be time for a big label-check. You'd be surprised what you'll find. There is also a chance of...
  7. Some doctor's (and savvy celiacs) recommend going dairy free at the beginning because your vili are still healing, making it hard to digest dairy. Dairy won't cause additional damage. (Wow, some "doctors"...) I didn't go dairy-free until a couple years after gluten-free (and held out as long as possible). I seem to be able to handle very small (a nibble...
  8. Hi Kitty I also have trouble with my sinuses, with pressure high in my sinus cavities and pressure/pain in my left ear. It also seems to cause mild vertigo-like symtoms (lightheaded, feeling like the room is tilting slightly), and I have constant tinnitus in that ear. A couple years ago it was really bad and I was SURE there was something up with my inner...
  9. Adela, welcome to the forum! Trust me, it'll get better. At least now you know, a: why you've felt so cruddy and b: that you'll slowly but steadily get better and better. GottaSki, yeah, I definitely don't think I have anything serious going on. Nothing aside from the occasional eating-out cc incident, and VERY occasional eating of cc'd products. Gluten...
  10. I also worry about chocolate sometimes. I'm also soy intolerant and even a couple cocolate chips with soy lecthin will do it for me. I have found some very good (and not cheap) organic dark chololate without soy, but haven't seen any major brands that are soy free. I would contact the companies and double check (and let us know what you find out!). Lindt...
  11. You can still get hit by a bus at the crosswalk, but then at least you can sue... (I'm also the kind of person who says, NO! I am not j-walking, I don't care if it takes longer to walk down to the lights. But then again all my close encounters with moving vehicles have happened while crossing in the proper places, so...) Thanks for some perspective, Irish...
  12. HI Kareng, Oh, quite understood. I think the original facts (or lack of facts) got lost along the way in this thread. I've been gluten-free for 4 years (as of this week!), and dairy and soy free for about 1. Recently I have done a lot of "tighening up", and am quite strict with my diet aside from the occasional meal out. Mostly whole foods, entirely...
  13. In addition to wussiness, I also don't like heated arguments, but as the "OP" I feel slightly responsible for this, so shouldn't go running off now. Gemini, I know where you're coming from. You've changed your lifestyle and maintain a 100% gluten-free diet and feel great! That's wonderful and inspiring, to know that yes, the diet works and it can be done...
  14. (oh dear. What did I start!? Didn't mean for this to devolve into a yelling match...) I think the take-home message here is: 1. everyone is different and deals with their condition in the ways they can. 2. Even with your best efforts people make mistakes (conscious or no), and they can take personal responsibility for the actions that lead to it (ie...
  15. I did read I study showing that Celiacs on a gluten-free diet often still have signs of damage after a time (but I think it was a pretty short period of time, and there was no way to say how strict these people were, so I think it's kind of bunk). I'll see if I can find the link. You have to follow a 100% gluten free diet in order to heal. You can't not...
  16. Hi Hannah, Welcome to the forum! Trust me, we've all had "what the hell did I do" moments. Your instincts will get better, but that's no guarantee you'll never get glutened, it'll just be "what the hell was in this that wasn't supposed to be" instead. Also, as you heal your tolerance for alcohol is going to go down. Trust me. Your body can now absorb...
  17. (oh dear, this is getting heated...) In my humble defense, 4 years in, I'm "tighter" with my diet now than I ever have been, 90% of meals I cook myself, and I'm very picky about the places I do eat out. In this particular incident, I covered all the bases and for all intents and purposes it should have been fine. Soy is a new thing and there's still a...
  18. I'm back to "normal" status, and hope to stay that way. Jury's still out whether or not I was glutened or soyed, but clearly even going to what seemed the safest place in the neighbourhood was a bad idea... I've been bringing dinner to work anytime I know I have to be out that evening, and last week I forgot. It happens. It could have been a lot worse. ...
  19. thanks guys I'm getting more concerned about the soy, to be honest. Which means I really have to stand back and reassess things. I was supposed to go stay with a friend this weekend and cancelled because I was feeling like crud and don't want to end up consuming something that causes me more crud, and not up to organizing food for a night away from home...
  20. I don't know where you'd get them, but one of my Korean students once gave me this triangle mold to make onigiri with. You put the mold in the middle of the nori sheet, some rice in the mold, then the stuffing in the middle, them more rice. take of the mold, and fold up the nori into a cute sandwichlike triangle! I think this thread has morphed into something...
  21. Hi guys So, I either soyed and/or glutened myself the other day, while being daring and trying the new burrito place in my work-hood. Just opened last week, lovely menu, and very celiac friendly, actually. no gluten-free menu but they use mostly corn tortillas and have dedicates (so far) half the grill to corn only. Things aren't automatically smothered...
  22. In order to eat anyone else's cooking, I feel like I have to interrogate them at gunpoint to get a full list of ingredients (now with soy and dairy on my no list, this is extra important). I've had more than a few stupid glutening moments. Most recent was this xmas. My stepbrother cooked a turducken (overkill) for dinner and I asked him, is it ok for us...
  23. ooh those look good. Get yourself some sushi rice. Cook it (not too much water!). Add a tablespoon or so of rice vinegar and mix in. Let it sit until it cools off. You can mix stuff in with it (preferably before it cools off) or you can stuff it with stuff. Usually I use half a sheet of nori, spread out some rice, put the stuff you want in it on top...
  24. anything that will go in tupperware or a zip-bag and won't spoil too quickly. Instead of sandwiches I'll often make rice balls wrapped in roasted (unseasoned) seaweed, or guacamole/hummus and chips. Fruit, nuts, cooked meats, etc etc. Anything you can eat with your fingers. For longer trips, taking a cooler with foods and staying somewhere with a small kitchen...
  25. I worked in a pizza restaurant just before going gluten free, and I swear it's what triggered my full-blown Celiac due to eating so much pizza/pasta and floury bits about. Don't know if I was being CCd after I went gluten-free (was only there a few weeks after starting the diet, prior to moving), but I can't imagine it would have been safe for me to stay...
