  1. I'm sorry to hear your friend doesn't realize the value in maintaining her gluten-free lifestyle. It must be frustrating for you to see obvious symptoms in her and not get through to her. I recently went on a gluten-free tour of the local WF store. There was a 30-something fellow with similar signs of cognitive "fog" and he appeared clueless to this situation...
  2. A weakened immune system from gluten intolerance can make a person more suseptible to chronic bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Chronic inflammation leads to tissue changes and abnormal cell growth. Hair follicles are often the first to suffer.
  3. Red wine could be a culprit; alcohol effects intestinal permeability which could make you more sensitive to other things. As others mentioned, you could be sensitive to sulfates, salicylates, oxylates and have a different gluten threshold than your daughter. Did you know that what most people call "stomach flu" is usually mild food posioning? Take care...
  4. When it comes to celiac disease/DH/GA, medical doctors are not the best informed people to rely upon to expand your own knowledge. For that matter, many licensed health care professionals aren't, unless they're effected. This isn't a black-white subject for doctors, researchers the medical community or the public at large. The knowledge base within the medical...
  5. My family members are so in denial, yet they're the ones that had all the genetic, blood and biopsy testing! They all tested negative for Celiac but positive for Gluten Intolerance. All they heard was (-)Celiac and think they're off the hook! I heeded the warnings from their doctors after spending 6 months caring for my mother when she went septic twice...
  6. I think the answer is pretty obvious if you're sick. A dirty, gluten-contaminated kitchen doesn't end at the kitchen door. That contaminated dust can spread throughout the house and HVAC system. My "in-laws" are far more considerate than my own family but there's still confusion and mix-ups. Perhaps they're more sympathetic because my boyfriend of 9 years...
  7. Physiologically, anytime intestinal permeability is altered, there's a greater likelihood of triggering an immune response which lead to allergies, sensitivities and toxic auto-immune reactions drastically increases. I never implied or inferred that Celiac/Gluten Intolerenace IS AN ALLERGY. It's a toxic, auto-immune reaction. That being said, Celiacs...
  8. Physiologically, EVERYTHING you eat goes through the liver to be processed. It's called the Hepatic Portal (Veinous) System. ALL return blood flow from the SI, LI, Stomach, Pancreas, Spleen, Liver, all tissues and organs below the diaphragm and contained in the left side of the chest, pass through the HPS on its way back to the Heart before it's circulated...
  9. Currently, I'm the Kansas City are. Eden Alley makes a number of items gluten-free but this place is an authentic Middle Eastern cafe. I felt bad for the owners as they're really trying to be gluten-free, not mocking or patronizing. I will eat there again now the problem's corrected. They make some of the best hummus and salads around. YUM! I haven...
  10. I've never not had a good hair day in my life. YES, I've experienced hair loss, both generalized thinning and patchy alopeica. My hair's been thin my entire life. Cycles of alopecia have been blamed on thyroid, estrogen/progesterone imbalance, anemia and others. Tests were negative and treatments did nothing. Even my eyebrows and body hair were quite sparse...
  11. I was recently told that the falafel served at a local, family-owned establishment was gluten-free with no cross contamination. I was assured the only items that contained gluten were pita bread and pastries. I was seriously disappointed when I reacted. All sorts of thoughts went through my brain; do I have a new allergy, too much cross-contamination, etc...
  12. Check out this site and bookmark it so you can research products before you buy. Open Original Shared Link Here's a few more tidbits to contemplate about toiletries and cosmetics: 1. There's no regulations regarding labeling or testing of these products in the USA. Far too often, ingredients AREN'T LISTED AT ALL!!! Perfumes and fragrances are particularly...
  13. Yes, you should be concerned about accidental exposures. While everybody responds differently to this kind of scenario, I don't know any Celiac/Gluten-Intolerant person that doesn't have some sort of symptoms that lets them know they've been exposed. Most people at time of diagnosis don't have the classic Celiac symptoms and often present with only one...
  14. Gluten, soy, chocolate, anything that you're intolerant of or allergic to can wreak havoc with your mental health, neuro-motor and cognitive fucntions, leaving you far more suseptible to "making mountains out of molehills" when it comes to stressors and navigating through these difficult economic times. You can't afford to bail on your gluten-free diet for...
  15. California, Oregon and Washington provide good overall access to gluten-free shopping and have the widest variety of fresh produce in my experience. My experience in Colorado has been hit-and-miss depending on location. British Columbia, even small towns, have markets and healthfood stores with gluten-free products. Right now, my planning concerns...
