  1. Hey I'm from Toronto Ontario and I"m wondering if there are any support groups in the area. I"m in the north end, but will go where the support group is.
  2. Hey -- are there any support groups in Toronto Ontario?
  3. Hey I was diagnosed a couple months ago. I have been having a very hard time getting a handle on what I can eat. Have other people found it difficult to get a hang of it. I mean, I just feel so overwhelmed and completely depressed about this. I feel silly even saying I'm depressed about it because, I mean, all I have to do is change my diet. There...
  4. Hey Scott Welcome. I"m glad you posted. I'm newly diagnosed as well (only a couple weeks into this thing) so I get how overwhelming it is. I empathize with you. I"m 32, living in Toronto. I also had some very rapid and substantial weight loss and have felt really miserable for some time. The good news is, we can achieve wellness if we follow this...
  5. Try to hang in there...I"m very recently diagnosed and also having a very difficult time figuring this all out. I felt good, better than usual, the first few days of my gluten free diet but since then I have been feeling progressively worse. Not sure if I"m being unintentionally glutened. And I'm also feeling depressed (very much so), which is unusual for...
  6. Hey! YES - I would love some tips and recipes. I have been a vegetarian for almost 7 years, but I admit my recipe base is small and I did rely upon faux meat products that I have discovered are full of wheat gluten in order to beef up the protein. The sunflower seeds on salad is a great idea I just didn't think about. I"d love any recipes related to...
  7. I am a big fan of Stoli Vodka and now I have just discovered it is made from wheat grains. Until I read this thread, I assumed all vodka was made from potatoes. I am only recently diagnosed and have been avoiding alcohol for sometime so it hasn't been an issue, but I was just thinking about picking up some Stoli. Instead I will try Luksusowa!
  8. Thanks Maile I'm going to check out my local health food store and if they don't have it I can order the almond flour on-line. And my husband wants to know what sort of dog you have? Adorable!
  9. Hey I'm just newly diagnosed and as a vegetarian who uses TVP I've been struggling. I am so glad I came across this forum and this thread...I am going to now look for gluten free tvp by Bob's Red Mill (I'm assuming this can be found in Canada....)
  10. Hey Wonka -- I guess the anemia must be common among celiacs, eh? I am severely anemic as well -- had no detectable iron levels at one point (and no stored iron). I hope your anemia is improving as your villi (sp?) heal. My limited understanding is that celiacs are unable to absorb nutrients and minerals due to damaged villi but that we can heal the damage...
  11. Hi -- and welcome. I'm a newbie too. Just diagnosed with celiac disease 6 days ago!! I"m also a dedicated vegetarian (I hope to transition to veganism, but one thing at a time). I"m feeling a bit lost since I have relied on faux meats and texturized vegetable protein for some time now, but I'm pretty sure we can figure it out. GOOD LUCK
  12. Yes it does. Thanks. I saw that they use lemon. I can't have it. I guess this may mean I won't be able to buy the packaged flour mixes. Not sure. I guess I can use arrowroot cookies as a thickener in stews? Not sure what to bake with....or make rue with.
  13. Wonka -- I want to thank you for the granola bar recipe. My husband made them tonight and they are so good. You're right, I'm not as panicked...probably because I do feel slightly better and because this board helps a lot. I"m not sure how people managed this without the internet. Honestly. But I"m still feeling overwhelmed. I have a very busy high stress...
  14. Hey there: I"m interested in participating with this thread, but I first wanted to ask just a basic question. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can increase my protein w/o eating meat. I am a vegetarian and prior to my diagnosis (which was very recent) I ate a lot of texturized vegetable protein (which is a no no) and faux meat products with...
  15. Hey -- this is exactly what happened to me. My blood work was negative. My liver specialist wanted to do an biopsy/upper GI endo so I had it done. I got a call from my specialist last Thursday telling me that the biopsy results indicate that celiac disease is very likely. She told me that the biopsy is the "gold standard" for diagnosis and that it is...
  16. Hey I've just recently (within the last few days) been told that I have celiac disease and I"m still trying to cope with how to really go about radically changing my diet and now I'm wondering if I should think about other things, like moisturizer, personal grooming products / beauty products, hair supplies?! I"m just not sure about this. Can someone...
  17. Hey -- It's only been a few days since my diagnosis and I"m trying to figure out a good flour replacement. Has anyone got any suggestions for me (I live in Toronto)? Does coconut flour work? If so, where can I get it. Thanks!
  18. Oh....my....goodness. There are flour substitutes! This is fabulous.
  19. Sincere thanks everyone. The responses have been very helpful. I plan to make those granola bars this weekend and purchased some gluten-free peanut butter on my way home from work! Baking corn bread tonight (since that seems easy as I"m using a gluten free mix). I bought a new toaster yesturday, but it never dawned on me that I would need to replace...
  20. Hi all: My liver specialist called me Thursday to tell me my biopsy indicates I have celiac disease. Have spent the days since then trying to figure out what to eat (I'm a vegetarian as well and allergic to citrus). It's a bit overwhelming at first, eh? Well, I just wanted to say "hi" I also wondered if anyone can tell me if there is any sort...
