I used to take Advil or Aleve years ago for menstrual cramps and did well with them. I stopped taking them 6 or 7 years ago because I was finding I was getting horrible stomach pains whenever I took them. Thinking back, they may very well have been gel-caps as I do remember buying that version for some time, although I can't definitively say it was during...

For the past few years I've been plagued with an intermittent, recurrent rash on my backside. Initially, I thought it was just folliculitis or simply "pimples". The strange part about them is that my skin burns like mad just before the "pimples" pop out. Once the "pimples" appear, the areas get incredibly painful. Just the light whisking of my clothing...

ARCHIVED Newbie With Limited Flour Availability - Need Recipe HelpBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips No problem, I just wanted the "no pancake" poster to know that, since I was the originator of this thread, that I wasn't offended by her comments. I've been "city" and I've been "no pancake", and for everything that I've given up in convenience like big shopping malls, over-stocked grocery stores, gyms, movie theaters, etc. I've gained an infinitesimal...

ARCHIVED Newbie With Limited Flour Availability - Need Recipe HelpBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Thank you, everyone, for the tips, recipes and all-around "keep your chin up" pep talks. I'm most definitely eager to try out some of the goodies you've provided links for. As for the "insult" about living in a "no-pancake rural area"...I thought it was VERY funny and I intend to incorporate that term into my usual decription of the area! I live in...

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker New gluten-free LineBigDogz replied to Tica's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips I'm ecstatic about these new Betty Crocker mixes...especially about the brownie mix...but they need to come out with a gluten-free bread mix that I can throw in my bread machine, set it and go! I'd kill for a sandwich about now but can't find anything other than corn meal, soy flour or ground flax locally so a gluten-free boxed mix would be a boon for me...

ARCHIVED Newbie With Limited Flour Availability - Need Recipe HelpBigDogz posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips I live in a very rural area where the stores don't carry much in the way of "exotic" foods and even less in the way of "specialty" or health-food type foods. I would have to drive nearly 60 miles, one way, to get to a health food store! The only gluten-free flours that I've found in grocery stores here are corn meal, soy flour and ground flax. I love...

ARCHIVED Pre-diianosisBigDogz replied to Leiana's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I self-diagnosed recently at the age of 41. Started having intestinal problems very suddenly at the age of 20 when I was chowing down almost every night on my comfort foods of subs or pizzas during my father's terminal illness. I did the best I could to live for the next 21 years with the symptoms that every doctor had termed "irritable bowel syndrome"...

ARCHIVED Want Tested - Can't Get ItBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Yeah, I knew I was taking the chance of a falsely negative test because of the gluten-free period but wanted to do it anyway. Like you, though, I feel that the return of symptoms with the re-introduction of gluten is proof enough of Celiac for me to make my own self-diagnosis. And, yes, believe me, you are SOOOOOOOOO right that I wouldn't want to stay...

ARCHIVED Want Tested - Can't Get ItBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Well... I got the home test kit from the UK today. I had been gluten-free x 4 weeks with complete resolution of my symptoms. I went back to glutening myself 10 days ago with a nearly immediate return of symptoms, some of which were actually magnified above and beyond what they had been previously. And bloating?! I look like I'm 9 months pregnant and...

ARCHIVED What Does This Look Like And What Can Help?BigDogz replied to boriquaabe718's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis I'm still awaiting a Celiac diagnosis, especially since my doc has been stonewalling on doing any tests. I've been reduced to going with the home testing route in order to get definitive answers. But, the more I read all of the posts on this forum, the more certain I am that I have celiac disease. 1.) I'm "inexplicably" B12 deficient. 2.) I have many...

ARCHIVED Brain FogBigDogz replied to Leper Messiah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I agree. I try to concentrate my shopping in the areas normally around the outsides of the grocery store - meat, fruit and vegetable areas. Most cheeses work well but it pays to read labels there as some shredded varieties use glutens to keep the product from clumping. About the only specially made gluten-free product I use is gluten-free Rice pasta...

ARCHIVED Want Tested - Can't Get ItBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I definitely plan to continue following my sugars. Since I don't have an "official" pre-diabetes or diabetes diagnosis from a doctor my health insurance won't pay for any supplies, so the cost of the test strips is coming out of my pocket. It can get expensive but I'm not about to sacrifice the early detection of a burdgeoning problem just because insurance...

ARCHIVED Hum........BigDogz replied to ohsroac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms My lab puts the lower limit at 180, which is one reason my doc didn't even want to treat me. The Europeans and Japanese go by much higher limits than we do in the US. They say that the ideal B12 level is 1,100-1,300. What's really interesting about that is that Alzheimer's is virtually unheard of in Japan and not nearly the problem in Europe as it is here...

ARCHIVED Brain FogBigDogz replied to Leper Messiah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I tend to agree with you about supplements that have a bunch of unnecessary crap in them. You also have to be very careful to get dietary supplements that don't contain gluten. Many popular, mainstream medicines use gluten containing fillers as part of their formulas. If you're going to supplement B12 and don't want a lot of other "stuff" mixed in, you...

ARCHIVED Want Tested - Can't Get ItBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms With the exchange rate from GBP to US dollars and the international shipping it still is only costing me about $50. Worth every penny if I get the affirmation I'm looking for...especially if I can wipe that smug, holier-than-though smirk off my doc's face!! I think there's a home test kit out of Canada, too, but the website says it's only available to...

ARCHIVED Brain FogBigDogz replied to Leper Messiah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I forgot to address the question of getting B12 from other sources such as pills and foods. Yes, B12 can be gotten from these sources...as long as your body is absorbing them. That's one of the catches with celiac disease. The inflamation and damage the gluten is causing to our intestinal tract (where the B12 gets absorbed) is preventing its absorption...

ARCHIVED Want Tested - Can't Get ItBigDogz replied to BigDogz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms WOW, I didn't know that stool testing would pick up antibodies for a whole YEAR! Frankly, I'm just doing the home test kit hoping to get a positive result so that I can show my doctor what a pompous, insensitive, under-educated, poorly practicing jerk he is. It's not going to change a thing in my mind even if it comes back negative. As far as I'm concerned...

ARCHIVED Brain FogBigDogz replied to Leper Messiah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms The US a medical utopia?? ROTFLMAO!!! It might be a medical utopia if you could get physicians to spend enough time and energy on you to actually listen to you and try to diagnose you instead of rushing through appointments and pigeon-holing you into a "throw away" diagnosis. My doctor tried pinning me with a Depression diagnosis, too. He hadn't even...

ARCHIVED Hum........BigDogz replied to ohsroac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Do you happen to know what your B12 level was? US practitioners are just know coming around to the fact that or "low normal" levels are too low. Many people have symptoms such as the numb, tingly and restless feelings when B12 drops below 450. The National Institute of Health now recommends levels of 450-900 but most US doctors still go by the old-school...

ARCHIVED Brain FogBigDogz replied to Leper Messiah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I've read this thread with interest as I'm currently without a diagnosis...except that I went gluten-free for one month with a complete and dramatic resolution of symptoms and then had an equally complete and dramatic return of symptoms when I tried going gluten again. So, I guess you could say I'm self-diagnosed, as well. One more mile...I looked at...

ARCHIVED Want Tested - Can't Get ItBigDogz posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Hi, all...I'm new here. I'm becoming more and more convinced that I've suffered from Celiac Disease for the past 20 years. My doc refuses to entertain the possibility or order testing, instead preferring to label the symptoms as IBS and telling me to "live with it". Trouble is, I can't. Up through my teen years I was able to eat everything and anything...
