  1. Boy...am I really glad that I found this post. I really thought I was the only one having trouble with this. I've told my best friend and, of course, my family and that's about it. I know it sounds strange, but it's not the fact that I'm "different" that gets me, I think it's more to do with the fact that practically no one knows what celiac disease is...
  2. Essentially, I was self-diagnosed, as well. I grew up eating everything and anything without a problem. That all changed when I hit my 20's. I was working full-time in a very stressful job and my father was diagnosed with terminal stomach/esophageal cancer and given 9 months or less to live. I was stressed out beyond belief and when the severe cramps...
  3. Momof2PrettyGirls... WOW! I had no idea so many other Celiacs had the pain in the same area I described. Definitely puts my mind at ease that I've been dealing with nothing more than the side effects of having been glutened. I also read your "mini profile" at the bottom of your post. It's interesting how you were able to figure things out on your...
  4. No. This is not a Great Value, Wal-Mart's own label, brand product. The company name is Fast Fixin'. I pulled their website addy off the box labeling and they provide a short list on the site of a few of their gluten-free products. They say a full list is available upon request. Unfortunately, the website deals only with their meat (chicken, beef &...
  5. My local Wal-mart is carrying a new pre-prepared breaksfast food called Fast Fixin' On the Go Southwestern Omelet. All you have to do is pop it into the microwave and nuke it. From what I can see of the ingredient list, it looks to be "safe". I have an email out to the company asking them about the gluten status of that product but haven't heard back yet...
  6. I haven't had any reaction to any of the newly gluten-free Chex cereals, per se. I DID have a box of the Honey Nut variety that had 2 smaller, darker Chex in it. I hemmed and hawed around about eating them and/or the remainder of the bowl but eventually decided they were just a bit over-browned, over-cooked and ate them anyway. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID...
  7. I've been pretty lucky that my local Wal-mart carries gluten-free Rice, Honey Nut, Corn and Cinnamon Chex. BUT...I had an experience of my own with that. I bought a box of Honey Nut Chex that had the gluten-free designation on the front. Ate half the box, no problem. Had a bowl one morning, prepared as I always do with fruit on the top and the same...
  8. I hate the feeling of being needlessly paranoid, but I guess the pain being under my right ribcage is what has me nervous. That's where your liver and your gallbladder live. When I was about 6, my pediatrician just about had a stroke because she noted that the whites of my eyes weren't really white...they're...a "soft" yellow. Mom told her it had been...
  9. LOL! I thought I was the only who noticed the "nail thing". As long as I can remember I've had fingernails that had deep ridges and were so dry and nasty that they flaked and peeled right off the top. I couldn't grow a fingernail if I'd tried. I grew up wanting to have pretty, painted nails like all my friends and the models and actresses you saw but...
  10. Hi, guys... I went to a July 4th picnic at a friend's place. She's well aware of my "issues" and was truly great in planning and making a menu that was gluten free so that I wouldn't feel excluded or uncomfortable having to constantly explain to other attendees why I didn't want/couldn't have such-and-such a dish, etc. She really went above and beyond...
  11. Nic38... I wouldn't get too uptight about the raised B12 level. Not only are you taking a complete vitamin with B12 in it, you also said that you were taking extra sublingual B12 tablets "like tic tacs". That could certainly account for the high B12...especially if you took them within a few hours of having your blood levels drawn. You would most certainly...
  12. MOJ... Ok, I think I see just why it is that you and I are not viewing these labs in the same light...and it has nothing to do with reporting methods. Nic38 is telling us that his FOLATE level is 20. You are looking at the lab values for FERRITIN. They are two very different substances. Ferritin is an iron-binding protein...meaning that it attaches...
  13. Mother of Jibril... Where are you getting the levels that you're basing your comment on? Are they US units or SI units (Syst
  14. I'm not at all surprised that all they said was "negative". Most doctors are trained that, if your results fall into the ranges provided by the lab than you can't possibly be having symptoms. Unfortunately, that is NOT the case. You have to keep in mind, too, that those so-called "norms" are basically the brainchildren of a group of guys who gather in...
  15. I'm glad to hear that you're feeling at least a bit better. Whether the root of the problem is gluten-related or related to just a low B-12, it may take some time before you're feeling back to your old self. I know for me, the longer I'm gluten-free the more energy I've had and the better I feel overall. It might be possible for you to get a copy of...
  16. Since we were talking about IgA deficiency earlier in the thread, I thought this might be of interest to everyone. I found this info on the the website for the Journal of the American Society of Hematology. You can follow this link to read the full article: Open Original Shared Link This is the paragraph specifically addressing the incidence of IgA...
  17. Nora, I'm still in awe of you and the fact that you understand all of the genetics involved in all of this. I think I'm understanding some things a bit better than I was before, but it still boggles my mind how a DQ1 can also be a DQ5 or DQ 6 and such-and-such combination reclassifies as a DQ8 or a DR7. Aaagghhhh...I guess it's good I never set my sights...
  18. I don't think it was silly to order it. You're only looking to protect your children from the misery everyone here has experienced and that's admirable. And, if the testing gives you some insight into what has been going on with your body, that's even better. I'm really beginning to think that my IgA level is low, too. My Enterolabs testing...
  19. Yes, I've realized that she was apparently VERY smart. I, on the other hand, am apparently a dumba$$ for muddying the waters with the Enterolabs testing. That being said though, my body has more than given me proof that it doesn't get along well with gluten AND it has given me equally certain proof that eliminating it makes me feel better, is helping me...
  20. For years I've suffered from what my doc (at that time) termed 'IBS'. The symptoms included intermittent diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps and gas. The past few years those symptoms grew worse, the diarrhea sometimes so bad that I could eat a salad at lunch and still ID certain vegetables when they showed up in the toilet just 4 or 5 hours later...
  21. I would hazard a guess that you'll get your results tomorrow. My test results took exactly 3 weeks to the day...and I didn't get them until late in the day East Coast time.
  22. As I said before, we've all been where you are now...fighting to get someone to listen and do something about symptoms that are REAL and not just "in your head" like so many physicians want to claim. I'd love it if I could help even one person avoid the decades long run-around I dealt with. The number one key is to stand your ground. Don't let dismissive...
  23. Interesting! A few other things you need to keep in mind is that there is more than one cause for B-12 deficiency. In addition to Celiac Disease, ahydrochloria (deficient stomach acid - needed to break down foods to properly extract B-12) and a lack of intrinsic factor (an enzyme responsible for absorption of B-12), also known as pernicious anemia. Both...
  24. Hi...and welcome to the group! First of all, let me start by saying there ARE alternatives to the endoscopy, especially since you've already been gluten-free for 2 months. I know there are some people on this board that are dubious about Enterolabs testing, mostly because the scientist(s) behind it haven't really published any papers for peer review of...
  25. Did your doctor happen to check your B-12 level? Many of the symptoms you mention (sore/tingling mouth, insomnia, panic attacks, heart palpitations, fatigue, depression - among a host of others) are things that can turn up if your Vitamin B-12 level is low. It might be something worth investigating, but...there's always a but, isn't there? BUT many...
