ARCHIVED Reverse-Engineering Udi's Bread
karenhockley replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Has anyone tried making the bagels? My son and I miss them terribly. I have noticed that everyone has commented that there is too much water in the bread recipe, should I just assume it's the same with the bagels? Well I'll be trying them out tomorrow. -

ARCHIVED False Negative Tests In Children Under 5
karenhockley posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I got my son tested today and my Dr mentioned that there maybe a change the results maybe a false negative because of his age (he just turned 4) has anyone ever heard of this before? He's still on a gluten filled diet right now unless he wants cookies, all baked goods are gluten free because of me :)I"m wondering if I'm just stressing over nothing, which... -
I know this is a tad gross but I have celiac and my son is 4 and today he had blood in his BM. Not sure if this is a sympton in children but we are off to the Dr's to get him checked out and get his test done today instead of waiting for his upcoming appointment. I was just wondering if any other child has had this. He complained of a stomach ache and...

ARCHIVED Should I Get Them Tested?
karenhockley replied to Carin3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Because of your history and by the sound of the symptoms your children have I would go ahead and get the genetic testing done. Some insurance companies pay for it. Even if you decide to go with the blood test your children are old enough to get a correct diagnosis (unless on a gluten free diet) I believe if the child is under 2 you could get a false negative... -
ARCHIVED 3 Year Old With Severe Stomach Pains
karenhockley replied to snoopdawn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm much older than your son (35 to be exact) but whenever I ingest some gluten (not that I mean to) I get all of those symptoms except for the vomiting, I end up with the diarrhea instead. I haven't really found anything that works well. Some tylenol and gas meds but I usually have to wait it out. Sorry I don't have any sure way to help out. and yes... -
ARCHIVED 4 Year Old With Stomach Pain
karenhockley replied to karenhockley's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm leaning toward doing the test but when we were at the doc's a few days ago he got 4 vaccines and I didn't want to case him anymore pain. I thought I would wait a week or two to see if it's a stress thing. I just want to know what others would do or if they've been through this. -
ARCHIVED 4 Year Old With Stomach Pain
karenhockley posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'll try to make this as short as possible. My four year old started complaining about stomach pains a little while back. I thought it maybe a stress thing because his daily schedule has change. We started driving my oldest to school and picking her up everyday. Over the Christmas break the complained a little more than usual but I figured it was because... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until You Feel Improvements?
karenhockley replied to zachyrocket's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For me I started to notice less pain 3 weeks into the diet but it too a good 3 1/2 months for all my joint pain to go. But what I ended up doing was just getting rid of all my shampoos, tooth paste and tooth brush, lotions and hair products and went all natural and one thing you have to remember is to question everything that you put on your skin and what... -

ARCHIVED Can A Celiac Live In A Gluten House?
karenhockley posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello all, I have an odd question. I would like to know how many of you out there still live in a gluten house? I do ALL the cooking in our house so I don't mind having gluten products in the house. The only time my husband does any kind of cooking it's bread and cookies or cakes for him and the kids. And it actually works well for us. I haven't had... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated, Confused, And Angry
karenhockley replied to lloydke's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For a disease that affects 1 in 133 people you'd think that there would be more information or at least more support from Doctors and others. We all share what your feeling at this moment, we've all been there and we're here to help you out or just listen when you need to vent. Sometimes a good venting session is all you need. That said because you went... -
ARCHIVED Scared To Get Pregnant!
karenhockley replied to reznicekk's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
! had three healthy pregnancies and babies. They were a little smaller than most babies but nonetheless they were healthy, the only problem I had was a placenta previa. I was diagnosed when I was 9 months old. I never had any problems getting pregnant nor did I have any miscarriages. I was more vigilant with the gluten free diet since you tend to have... -
Hello all, I was diagnosed when I was 9 months old (1974) then when I was 8 (1982) the doctors put me on a gluten challenge and I tolerated it well. Then in my early 20's I stared having problems again and when to my family doctor or rather the doctor that was taking over his practice while he was away and she said that I was misdiagnosed in the first...

I'll keep everyone posted at to where and when it opens and what he's going to name it. If your ever in the London area his bakery is... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Is A Celiac - I Am Not - gluten-free For The Baby?
karenhockley replied to Celiac's Wifey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I read an article by a Dr Guandalini about celiac not too long ago. Although he doesn't say anything about what to do when your pregnant and one of the parents are celiac he does go on to say that in the mid 1960's there was evidence suggesting that prolonged breastfeeding was protective against celiac. Prolonged meaning at least 2-3 months after gluten... -

ARCHIVED My Husband Is A Celiac - I Am Not - gluten-free For The Baby?
karenhockley replied to Celiac's Wifey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Congratulations this is a really exciting time for both you and your husband but unfortunately there is nothing you can do to prevent Celiac in the baby. I was diagnosed when I was 9 months old and had no problems getting pregnant with my 3 children. The best thing you can do is get the baby tested after he/she is born. The best person to discuss... -
ARCHIVED Got The Blood Panel Done While On gluten-free Diet
karenhockley replied to karenhockley's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks guys. I was leaning towards getting them tested but I'm not sure if my Doctor will try to talk me out of it since this last test result. I know that you can have Celiac and be symptom free. -
ARCHIVED Got The Blood Panel Done While On gluten-free Diet
karenhockley posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I went to my doctor's a few months back and told him my symptoms and he decided to do the Celiac blood panel. The only problem is about a month before I made the appointment I started the gluten-free diet but when I told him that he said that was fine and that the gluten-free diet wouldn't have an impact on the test result and well now I'm looking at the... -
ARCHIVED Coeliac Vaccine
karenhockley replied to mick's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have to agree with you, I'm not holding my breath! It sound like something they did in the 70's early 80's. I was diagnosed when I was around 9 months old and when I was around 8 the Dr did a biopsy and said that the diet was working and that I should start adding gluten to my diet. 2 years later the Dr said I was in remission! and well they were wrong... -
ARCHIVED Coeliac Vaccine
karenhockley replied to mick's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've looked into it and it's an Australian company who is making the vaccine. The first step of the trial started in April with 40 volunteers. This trial will last a total of 11 months and attempt to determine if the vaccine does any harm. The second trial for this new vaccine will attempt to determine whether or not the vaccine is effective by feeding... -
ARCHIVED I Was Off Gluten For 3 Weeks But Would Like To Get Tested
karenhockley replied to Libbyanne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Don't quote me on this but I think you have to be on gluten for at least 3 months (not too sure though). If I were you I'd also get the Doctor to test for gluten allergy, I've got a few friends who have gluten allergy and the symptoms they had mimic Celiac. They were also tested for Celiac but test was negative. Hope this helps out a bit and good luck... -
