  1. Peterand, you certainly may have a separate sensitivity to corn; it's rather common to uncover additional food sensitivities after you eliminate gluten. Do you have a problem with other corn products? I wonder, too, if there might be a cross-contamination problem with the brand of cornstarch your wife uses--or if it may have gotten traces of flour in it...
  2. Lucy, I so totally agree about Jeopardy! I used to love to watch it, but then the brain fog took over and made it so frustrating to sit there and grope for answers! I'm doing somewhat better in that department now, but I'm not really totally "with it" again yet. spinorita and Crystal, my family doesn't really understand my depression, either. But then...
  3. Steve, I use Purity Farms ghee. I buy it at my local health food store or Whole Foods Market, but I MAY have seen it (or another brand) available at the "higher-class" regular supermarket in my area--I can't remember, since it has been awhile. Good luck finding it! --Sarah (Don't know what happened to my sig last time!)
  4. Kathleen, I wonder if Connie's pooris (without cinnamon sugar) would make a suitable substitute for pita bread? I know they are fried rather than baked, but I wonder.... Connie has re-posted her recipe here in this section of the new board. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
  5. Granny, It's fine to leave out the scallions if you can't have them. Traditional hummus usually uses just garlic, anyway. Dried parsley doesn't have much flavor, but you can use it for appearance's sake or leave it out. I believe I mentioned that ghee (clarified butter) promotes colon health, but hummus is a great source of protein and healthy fats...
  6. Suzanne, I'm no expert, but I don't think that there is a connection between celiac disease and Huntington's disease. Both are genetic, but they have completely different transmission patterns--and if they were caused by the same gene, I have no doubt we would all know about it! celiac disease has a *predisposing* gene (actually two), but even if you...
  7. Steve, Yes, broccoli can be extremely hard to digest and cause a lot of gas and other discomforts--or is that what you meant? I find that oranges and tangerines give me heartburn, and bananas cause intestinal cramping for me. I am mostly eating apples and pineapple (canned in juice, NOT syrup--the syrup may not be gluten-free!) right now, but since these...
  8. Steve, would you mind posting a list of what you do eat so we can scratch our heads together ? Possible non-gluten culprits that come to mind immediately are lactose and fruit sugars. These can be impossible to digest through a damaged bowel, but you don't notice that they might be a problem until you have eliminated gluten!
  9. Here are a couple of recipes for hummus or hummus-like bean dips. Enjoy! Hummus with Herbs and Spices 2 cups cooked chickpeas plus 1/4 cup cooking liquid OR 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed, plus 2 Tbsp. lemon juice and 2 Tbsp. water 1/2 cup tahini 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 cup chopped scallions (green and white parts) 1/2 cup chopped fresh...
  10. LuvtoLaff, Please don't give up! For the sake of your body, health, and future, please keep trying! I know it can be extremely hard to give up a favorite food, but the cravings do ease over time, and the hunger gets more manageable. If bread fills you up so easily, it's most likely because it is SHUTTING DOWN your digestion--which doesn't accomplish...
  11. aball, I understand the frustration you must feel over having the gluten-free lifestyle FORCED on you (with NO cheating allowed, EVER)--and your response of not limiting junk food is something I would probably have done, too, if I had come to the gluten-free lifestyle straight from the "standard American diet." As it is, I have been following the diet...
  12. LuvtoLaff, I, too, know exactly what you mean! It has gotten somewhat better for me, though--now I just eat enough for two grown men instead of three! Still, my friends all gape uncomprehendingly as I stuff down more food than I should be able to hold! Have you tried taking digestive enzymes? If your intestines are in bad shape, you won't obtain...
  13. Jeff, It is fairly well documented in the medical literature that the nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers of all types) can cause joint pain and inflammation in susceptible individuals. Might you be one of these? A food diary would probably help you sort out secondary food sensitivities, if you aren't already keeping one...
  14. Toni--salicylic acid IS the active ingredient in aspirin, I believe, so you should definitely switch products if you need to avoid NSAIDs! Filititi--have you tried a thick, creamy body lotion (gluten-free, of course) on your rash? If it's not full-blown DH, it might respond to being moisturized! I hope everyone is doing well! --Sarah
  15. Thank you, Danielle--you just made me laugh out loud! I really needed it, too; today's being rather rough. I had never heard the phrase "hugging the porcelain god" before, and for some reason I just find it hilarious! --Sarah
  16. Hi, Lily! Have you looked at the book _Eat Right 4 Your Type_ (and its sequel, _Live Right 4 Your Type_)? It is based on the premise that different people need different foods/diets and that your blood type (or, more accurately, your "tissue type," since the markers are present on every cell in your body) plays a large role in determining which foods...
  17. Hi, Stacie! It's funny, I'm sitting here with the first canker sore I've had in several weeks, and I'm not sure exactly what caused it. I know I have gotten quite a bit of gluten contamination in the past week (visiting the family, who believe in a "non-disclosure" policy regarding bread and cookie crumbs, and eating out four times while traveling), so...
  18. Steven, I have experienced exactly the same itch you mention, usually on a leg just above the knee but sometimes on an arm just below the elbow. I first noticed it after I drastically reduced the amount of wheat I was eating (but I wasn't yet even considering celiac disease, so I still ate wheat about once a week). The day after I would eat pasta, I...
  19. Hi, Lisa! I've displayed clusters of the more obscure celiac disease symptoms for pretty much my entire life: canker sores and frequent infections (I got mono when I was three!); gingivitis, cavities, and nocturnal bone pain; acne, migraines, and endometriosis; severe depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome; lifelong problems with a furred tongue...
  20. I get three-day migraines occasionally, too, with contamination. I got a really interesting headache yesterday at dinner, when I ate a contaminated vegetable stir-fry mix (there were two identical mixes on the shelf, except one had noodles added--they must use the same machinery to package them!). Before I was done eating, my stomach started to ache, and...
  21. Denise, Carnation Good Start seems to be gluten-free, but might your baby have a dairy sensitivity? Is this the first time he has tried cow's milk? Another area of inquiry is cross-contamination of the rice cereal--I haven't researched this myself because my boys don't eat baby cereal anymore, but I don't know of any baby cereal manufacturer who DOESN...
  22. saanders, Is this your first holiday season with celiac disease? It is mine, and I expect I will be facing similar reactions from my in-laws when we visit them. They live out of state, so we stay for a few days and eating in advance wouldn't work in that case. I'm not sure what I will do about the main meal(s) (maybe cook an entire meal in advance and...
  23. With all the relatively new stir-fry vegetable blends on the market, we will need to call manufacturers to find out about cross-contamination issues because some blends contain pasta mixed right in with the vegetables! This was brought to my attention this evening by a burning stomachache and intense headache that began before I was even finished eating...
  24. Jan, I know what you mean about the itching! I have used Desitin on it as well, or Vaseline, when I am desperate. Do you have gas at the same time you have the itching? I do. I think what happens for me is that I pass gas PLUS a tiny bit of fecal material, which then takes up residence on my anal sphincter and makes me ITCH! I find that using wet...
  25. Wow.... Um.... This new board is really nice, but I have no idea how to use all the extra features! I guess I'll learn soon. Was there any advance notice given about changing the message board? I think I remember a poll being taken, but was a decision ever announced? Did I miss something? I'm not criticizing, just a bit bewildered! I sometimes find...
