  1. kaz75, I agree with your doctor and Natalie; it really looks like you're getting gluten from somewhere. You say that you got sick again recently, and I am assuming that you had been doing fairly well before then. So, what happened in your life right before you got sick? Did something change in your diet/medications/hygiene routine? If so, there's your...
  2. shimma and SteveW, It must be SO frustrating and disheartening to be constantly worried that you will embarrass yourself beyond belief whenever you are in a public place! I am so grateful that my symptoms never got to that point (although I have lost control at home a couple of times!). A thought just occurred to me, though: are you still eating dairy...
  3. centeron, I believe it's been established beyond a reasonable doubt that gluten IS the trigger for celiac disease, but wheat specifically has other components that can be extremely irritating to susceptible individuals. Wheat germ lectin, in particular, can cause a host of problems. Do you perhaps find that "white" bread is less troublesome than the...
  4. Laurie anne, Unfortunately, spelt is NOT gluten-free. It is the "ancient" form of wheat that farmers originally domesticated, so while it does not have as much gluten as its hybridized counterpart today, it definitely does contain gluten and must be avoided. The same is true for kamut, another "ancient" wheat-like grain.
  5. HSWade, do you find Tinkyada's lasagna noodle has problems? I don't make lasagna very often because I can't have dairy either, so what's the point? But I have been considering attempting a vegan lasagna anyway....
  6. Kim, Your son sounds a lot like my two boys. They are both very tall (80th to >95th percentile) and "apparently thriving," in the words of their pediatrician, yet they have very soft bowel movements that smell absolutely vile and sometimes turn to diarrhea. Sometimes my 18-month-old poops several times a day, but ususally he goes just once or twice...
  7. Toni, I have tried Muir Glen diced tomatoes and fire-roasted diced tomatoes, and oh, my goodness, are they delicious! I didn't notice any immediate reaction to them, but I remember that I was still in the process of reacting to a previous meal at the time, so I can't be entirely sure that they were OK. I have also used DelMonte diced tomatoes and Hunts...
  8. Heather, Welcome to the board! It's nice to have you here! As difficult as it is right now, it sounds like you're on the right track as far as improving your daughter's health is concerned. As you may already know, milk protein sensitivity is fairly common among celiacs--although it certainly doesn't make the diet any easier! I and my two children...
  9. Wayne, I don't know the answer to your question, but Dr. Fine of Open Original Shared Link might. If you decide to ask him, please let us all know what he says!
  10. Toni, Oh, no! How disheartening! I'll go ahead and ask the obligatory questions: Can you eat fresh tomatoes with no trouble? Do you successfully eat any other products with corn-based citric acid? Could there have been cross-contamination of the crust, or some other element of the pizza? I have actually been having a few mouth ulcers and increased...
  11. Hi, Phil! Let's hear it for forward progress! Like you, I feel like maybe I have finally found the key that will allow me to unlock my full potential as a human being, and no one could pay me enough to convince me to go back on gluten for testing! Right now I eat exclusively at home except when I am traveling, and even then I take as much food with...
  12. Dawn, I know how frustrating it is to have relatives brush off your concern for them! It's infuriating sometimes. The only wisdom I have to offer is frustrating in and of itself: remember that THEY are responsible for their own health! Once you have shared your concern with them (which you are totally within your rights to do), it is important to give...
  13. It could be.... I think the spleen and the stomach lie at about the same level, though, so it could be stomach discomfort you're feeling. I don't really know. I'm not even sure, actually, whether the spleen lies in front of or behind the stomach, although I am inclined to place it in front, just behind the ribs. That's a fascinating question you've asked...
  14. Judy, thank you so much for the tip! I just checked out the website for "Mac & Chreese," and it looks like something I will definitely want to try for my kids! I live near Philadelphia, so I expect I should be able to find it somewhere around here. Thank you for the compliment as well--like Mariann just posted in another thread, I absorb medical knowledge...
  15. Donna, Thank you for the suggestions! The boys are having a cooperative day today, more or less, so they are actually playing nicely together and letting me have some down time right now, which is really wonderful! They certainly do enjoy active play, although I rarely notice it tiring them out. I will have to look into digestive aids to help control...
  16. Mindy, You sound like me, only more so! I'm 27 years old, too, and I feel like my body has been slowly betraying me ever since I was born. Doctors have never been able to figure me out. I didn't have digestive symptoms until recently, though, so I fortunately haven't had to deal with the "cop-out" diagnosis of IBS. Let me reassure you of one thing...
  17. Hi, laelfin! I have two kids, ages 3.5 and 1.5, but I just found out I have celiac disease a few months ago (and so do they!). Well, my body is just now starting to get interested in maybe having another one, so I have to consider my options.... First of all, it is not uncommon for a woman with (undiagnosed) celiac disease to experience repeated miscarriages...
  18. VAGuy, It's great to hear that the gluten-free diet is making such a positive difference in your well-being! The increased calmness since going gluten-free is something I can definitely relate to. I actually feel less exhausted now, but more sleepy, if you understand the distinction I'm trying to make. Before, I was so anxious all the time that it just...
  19. Hillary, As I understand it, it is common for symptoms of celiac disease to come and go. I believe the blood tests typically do NOT produce false positive results--though false negatives are another story entirely. I totally understand your wish, however! I hope your daughter's biopsy conclusively proves the diagnosis, so you can move beyond the doubt...
  20. Mariann--Oh, my goodness!!! That's awful! It must have been nearly impossible to control your temper--I don't know how you managed it! I hope you don't get sick as a result of your kids' escapade, and I hope they got the message and don't pull a stunt like that again! Shirley and Kathleen--Thanks for the suggestions! I do foist as much responsibility...
  21. Done, Mariann--and thanks for reminding me that I have some leftover roasted cauliflower in my fridge! I don't think it will be there tomorrow! I hope you are doing well!
  22. Here is my adaptation of a recipe found in 1,000 Lowfat Recipes by Terry Blonder Golson. If you really like garlic, use the larger amount; vary the salt by the size of the head of cauliflower. Enjoy--this is my absolute favorite way to eat cauliflower! Roasted Cauliflower with Rosemary and Garlic 1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets (stem...
  23. Nadia, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that the production lines were dusted with flour (possibly oat flour) to prevent the fruit from sticking. You'll want to ask the manufacturer about that possibility. Chopped date pieces, especially, are usually coated in a large quantity of oat flour before they are packaged, and maybe the fruit you bought was...
  24. Welda, Thank you for the encouragement! I don't FEEL like an outstanding mommy; an outstanding mommy would manage to avoid giving her children contaminated food! My only consolation is that we are reacting to foods that SHOULD be gluten-free, unless they have a hidden source of gluten or got contaminated at the factory: a boneless turkey breast...
  25. Would it be possible to change the layout so the report button is in its own place, some distance away from all other buttons? This would probably take care of the accidental reporting problem. I'm not saying that it has to be done immediately, but if you decide to fiddle with the appearance of the board at all, that would be a good time to address this...
