  1. I wonder if your doctor ordered tests for TOTAL serum IgA and IgG, instead of specifically ANTI-GLIADIN IgA and IgG. If this is the case, don't despair; it is actually very important to know the total values as well, especially for IgA. You'll want to ask your doctor about this and request testing for ANTI-GLIADIN IgA and IgG and anti-tissue transglutaminase...
  2. blackpacer, Did your doctor perform a biopsy on your rash to determine whether it was dermatitis herpetiformis? DH does last for months, and celiac disease IS an autoimmune reaction to wheat (gluten)! You may want to consider ordering a stool test from Open Original Shared Link, which MAY still come back positive even though you have been gluten-free...
  3. YankeeDB, Vitamin B-12 can only be absorbed at all if sufficient levels of "intrinsic factor" are present in the stomach to convert it into a form that is usable by the body. If B-12 supplementation is necessary, methylcobalamin is preferred because it is already the "active" form of the vitamin. Cyanocobalamin, while more common and less expensive,...
  4. Mariann, I totally agree with you!
  5. Bessie, I agree with Shirley that you need to give the gluten-free diet a bit longer before you decide it's not working. Also, what foods are you eating right now? Gluten can hide in SO many strange places (including in some brands of WHITE RICE, I just discovered--sometimes the vitamins they spray on the rice to "enrich" it are derived from barley!...
  6. camurph1023, It sounds like both of your children would benefit from testing for celiac disease, especially since there is a family history of the disorder. I know that I was a constipated child, and both of my children have eczema that gets worse after a gluten accident. They are also very tall for their ages, but their weight is falling down the charts...
  7. Judy, that's great! How serendipitous that your dentist's partner is personally familiar with celiac disease! It must be a relief to have someone who can advocate for you at the dentist's office. I'm glad you had a positive experience, and I hope you are doing well!
  8. Thanks to everyone for posting on this thread! I took a day trip to New York yesterday for my friend's new baby's naming ceremony, and *I* got to pick the restaurant that we would eat at afterward, so I chose Gus's Place. The food was good, and it was so nice not to have to worry about cross-contamination! (We even managed to park right outside the restaurant...
  9. Heather, I believe acid reflux is associated with celiac disease. I know a one-year-old who had reflux trouble as a newborn, and now he has eczema and a distended stomach.... I have suggested celiac disease testing to his father, but I have no idea whether it will ever be done. I think it would be a very good idea to have your other children tested...
  10. Aldo, There are two ways that I know of to modify the appearance of text. Here's how I do it: I type out my reply and THEN go back and highlight the words I want to modify. While they are highlighted, I click on the button(s) that make them look the way I want them to. That way I don't have to remember to "close the tag" when I want normal text again...
  11. Sabina, Your children sound like my sister and me! When I was in high school and college, I had very little appetite and weighed less than 100 pounds (I am 5'5" tall), but despite my pediatrician's concerns, I did not have an eating disorder. My younger sister, however, was quite pudgy until she hit adolescence, when she suddenly stopped gaining weight...
  12. Aldo, You must be flattering me! Seriously, I certainly don't mind if you ask me questions, although I can't guarantee that I will know all the answers! You could also send me a private message through the board, which is probably the more appropriate venue if your question is more esoteric and not of general interest. Another resource that is invaluable...
  13. Lee, I get my rice pasta at Whole Foods Market or my little local health food store. There is even a regular supermarket in my area that stocks Rizopia spaghetti! I hope you find a supplier in your area, and I'm glad you're feeling better today!
  14. Celia, You are a fine mother! I understand your feelings, though, because I've had them myself. I keep reminding myself that it's not my job to clear away the obstacles from my children's path, but rather to make sure they have the resources to get over or around them on their own. It's hard to watch them struggle, though, and with young kids like ours...
  15. Judy, I have always been fascinated by medicine, and I accumulate medical knowledge without really trying. When I was a small child, I would ask my mother to read to me from A Sigh of Relief, a kid-oriented, oversized first-aid book with large print and large illustrations for every step. (I still have the book, too!) I remember reading most often about...
  16. I just discovered that Shady Brook Farms makes Italian sausage in both sweet and hot varieties; their website claims they are both gluten-free! Happy hunting!
  17. Gina, It certainly seems to be true in some cases. My layperson's view on the issue is this: In order for a "foreign" substance to appear in breastmilk, it must be absorbed into the milk from the bloodstream. Food proteins are NOT normally found in the bloodstream, at least in quantities expected to cause difficulties. However, if a breastfeeding mother...
  18. Naradowski, someone (I think it was Virginia?) suggested in another thread that you could order gluten-free foods online and have them shipped to your destination. It's something to consider, if you will be staying at the same location for the entire week!
  19. Is this the reference you are asking about? Here is how I understand it: The paper in question (of which this is only the abstract, of course) discusses three theories on HOW gluten ingestion results in enteropathy, but I believe--although, to be fair, the wording of the abstract does not specifically state or imply this--that the authors are PRESUPPOSING...
  20. Terri-Anne, I'm not positive about the source of envelope/stamp glue, but my guess is that it is wheat-based, sort of like the flour-and-water paste kids use to make papier-mache or like wallpaper paste used to be (and sometimes still is!). I hope this helps! P.S. I turned around to check on what my toddler was watching on TV just in time to see a girl...
  21. Willamina, you'll need to call the manufacturer about the natural flavors and colors, to be sure they don't contain gluten. Also, guar gum has a laxative effect on SOME people, whether they are celiac or not--just something to keep in mind in case you find yourself in the bathroom after eating WowCow!
  22. Sylvia, I am just a layperson, not a trained medical professional, but here are my thoughts on the very salient issues you raised: First of all, I agree that it would be wise to see about arranging for someone who understands the intricacies of the gluten-free diet to bring you meals while you are in the hospital. It's just a lot less risky that way...
  23. Sharon, You're not the only one who's certifiable, then, because I agree with you! I see celiac disease as a genetic DIFFERENCE that results in gluten simply not being FOOD for us. (And I don't know this for sure, but I would bet that there are other plants out there that are classified as "inedible" because they produce similarly toxic reactions--but...
  24. Aldo, Eat Right 4 Your Type may mention the secretor/nonsecretor variation in passing, but it does not go into any detail on the subject. It presents a simplistic version of the diet that is a compromise between the two variants. This is largely because Dr. D'Adamo expected many of the book's readers to be "fad dieters" who were interested mainly in...
  25. AntiGluten, I remember the feelings you describe very well! I also remember the feeling of being hopelessly and helplessly out of control as I lashed out at anyone in my vicinity, and the incredible effort it took to subdue those reactions. Whenever I was thwarted by anyone or anything, an image would pop into my mind of me collapsing in a heap on the...
