  1. Lisa, That's how I pronounce it. Some people say it like "silly yak." Coeliac is the British spelling, and I am pretty sure it is pronounced the same as celiac. The o is in there because the word is derived from Latin, which used oe and ae vowel combinations in some words, but we Americans tend to drop confusing silent vowels from Latin words. Speakers...
  2. irish and Kathy, Glutamine is a specific amino acid. I don't know exactly what it is used for in the body, but I believe it can help regulate mood, control cravings, and heal gut damage--all useful things for us celiacs! Acidophilus (Lactobacillus acidophilus) is a friendly bacterium that is best known as the culturing agent in yogurt. It is desirable...
  3. Hi, celiacfreeman! Welcome to the board! It sounds like you are still in shock, which is totally understandable. I'm sure that there are very few people out there who can just take this sort of news in stride. A diagnosis of celiac disease means an immediate and drastic lifestyle change, even if you have no obvious symptoms--and it sometimes comes out...
  4. I know I have read that EnviroKids cereals may be cross-contaminated, and I have to say that my experience seems to bear this out. Several days ago, I was taking an afternoon nap, and I woke up to discover that my older boy had eaten an ENTIRE box of cereal (either Gorilla Munch or Amazon Corn Flakes--I can't remember which, but both are labelled gluten...
  5. I'm just curious: do you have to be officially diagnosed and/or carry a doctor's note to be able to take medically necessary food into amusement parks and such places, or do they actually take your word for it that you have celiac disease? My in-laws want to take all of us to Idlewild park this summer, and the last thing I would want is to find myself all...
  6. Stepha, For a REALLY (I mean SUPREMELY) wonderful collection of chicken recipes, check out The Cook's Illustrated Complete Book of Poultry (Open Original Shared Link is a link). It has an entire chapter devoted to each major way of preparing chicken (*including* stir-fries, curried chicken, chicken and dumplings, chicken pot pie, and recipes that use...
  7. Hi, Joyce! I can't be 100% sure, but I might react to canola oil. I've certainly reacted to a number of home-cooked meals that should have been gluten-free and contained canola oil. Come to think of it, I still have a bottle of canola oil and could drizzle some on Bush's baked beans to test it! I have never yet reacted to the beans, so if I have a reaction...
  8. Hey, ellcrys, I didn't mean to sound critical of YOU! I hope I didn't come across that way, but I can totally understand if I did--1:00 in the morning isn't my most tactful time of day! If you like DeBoles pasta, that's fine with me, and if you find something you like better, that's fine too! Happy hunting!
  9. I have very freckled forearms (but no freckles at all on my face), and interspersed among the light tan freckles are some little spots that look like white freckles--completely pigmentless. I wonder if that counts as a degree of vitiligo. I also have at least one iregularly-shaped patch slightly smaller than a nickel that is a shade or two darker than my...
  10. Yeah, that was it--I knew I read something really annoying in the article, but I couldn't remember what it was when I posted!
  11. beauvillier, By chance, are you still eating dairy products (milk, cheese, butter, etc.)? They are usually gluten-free, but they are often impossible to digest while your intestines are still damaged (because you may have temporary lactose intolerance). You might want to stop eating dairy products for a week or two and see if your diarrhea improves....
  12. Lily, I believe I have read that the increased cancer risk applies to *untreated* celiacs, while those of us who are successfully healing on a gluten-free diet have about the same risk as the general population. Since I am self-diagnosed, I don't know whether I have any associated conditions or not--but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I have...
  13. Hi, Newbie! I've had the pain you describe, and I believe it is related to gluten consumption. One time, many years ago when I was in college (WAY before I knew I had celiac disease), I got this pain so intensely that they kept me at the health center for observation in case I had appendicitis--and they never did find a good reason for it! My father...
  14. Loretta, being in a relationship when you are diagnosed with celiac disease just presents a different set of issues! I even wondered at one point if my marriage would survive, there was so much angst between myself and my husband over preparing food and socializing with friends and decontaminating the kitchen and putting the kids on the gluten-free diet...
  15. ROYAL BLUE, I can understand your frustration. My son doesn't usually act terrible in public; he saves it up and lets loose at home! I think uncontrollable explosive behavior probably is fairly typical of celiac children. Hey, I'm not a kid anymore, and I STILL find it impossible sometimes to control myself when I have a gluten accident. If it's a big...
  16. ellcrys, does the sauce still stick to the pasta if you use oil in the water? I know that with regular semolina pasta, the sauce slides right off of oiled noodles. It might be different with rice pasta, though. I hope it is, because I often end up with pasta logs! And I can't help sharing that my favorite brands of rice pasta are Tinkyada and Rizopia...
  17. Lisa, I wonder if they are referring to the after-dinner candies one gets at places like Pizza Hut rather than the herb itself. My guess is that the candies would be much more troublesome (especially since they are typically consumed after a meal that consists almost solely of gluten plus dairy!), though I have read that peppermint oil can be rather irritating...
  18. Steve, I can't remember the name of the brand, but it was the store brand at Kroger. Since then, I have contacted BirdsEye about their vegetables, and they said that they don't dust the lines with anything and that any of their vegetable/pasta blends would be packaged at a different facility from the plain vegetable medleys. So good news there! I...
  19. Hi, everyone! I'm just looking for ideas on how to deal (emotionally and practically) with the wild, crazy behavior of my kids when all three of us have a gluten accident at the same meal (which is usually the way it happens). I get the impression that the standard advice I read (in Kids with Celiac Disease, for example) assumes that Mom does NOT have...
  20. I haven't tried actual fast food since I went gluten-free, but I did have a good experience at an Eat 'n' Park (Western PA chain sort of like Denny's) restaurant recently. I explained my needs to the server and asked whether the plain baked fish would be a good choice, and she replied that she remembered waiting on another celiac customer who had ordered...
  21. Steve, Oops! It sounds like you are going through caffeine withdrawal. I forgot about that possibility! Options at this point include 1.) resuming your former beverage consumption habits (probably not the wisest choice, at least at this time); 2.) toughing it out for a week or two, but getting ALL the caffeine out of your system; or 3.) consuming small...
  22. That's GREAT!!! I'm so happy for both of you!
  23. Jacque, Even decaf coffee and tea still contain a significant amount of caffeine, so if you are extremely caffeine-sensitive it might NOT make a difference. The only way to know is to try it, though. Another avenue of inquiry I would suggest is switching to organic coffee and tea. I can't remember who it was, but someone here on the board reported that...
  24. I called the Hain Celestial Group about the gluten-free status of Walnut Acres juices, and they actually seemed unprepared to answer this question! Then they suggested that their machinery might be contaminated with traces of gluten. GRRR! I've pretty much decided not to trust ANY of their products! But then I called the Fresh Ideas Group about their...
  25. I cut caffeine completely out of my diet (even decaf coffee and tea) and noticed a dramatic reduction in my migraine frequency and intensity. Now the only times I have gotten them are when I have a gluten accident. Someday, after I have gone awhile with no accidents, I plan to test caffeine again to see whether it is a separate problem for me or whether...
