ARCHIVED Gf Sausage?
seeking-wholeness replied to julia mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm...I thought I had posted a reply here, but I guess I must have hit the wrong button! Anyway, Wellshire farms makes several varieties of gluten-free sausage. I'm not sure whether Italian is one of them, but it's worth checking out. They even make some turkey sausages, and their uncured turkey bacon is delicious! -
ARCHIVED Which Foods Are Safe?
seeking-wholeness replied to huskyfan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Huskyfan, There is some uncertainty about the gluten-free status of millet. On the one hand, it is closely enough related to corn that you wouldn't expect it to contain gluten, but on the other hand, a usually-reliably-informed individual at another website just posted something that placed millet in the off-limits category. I have had problems with... -
ARCHIVED Can You "outgrow" Symptoms?
seeking-wholeness replied to cmay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Cynthia, It is possible to "outgrow" the SYMPTOMS of celiac disease, but NOT the disease itself! I have read in Kids with Celiac Disease that there is often a "honeymoon period" during late childhood and adolescence when the symptoms appear to vanish--only to return later in a different guise. When this happens, the "new" symptoms are often wrongly attributed... -
ARCHIVED Wierd Symptoms - Celiac?
seeking-wholeness replied to swimmer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
swimmer, I think your worry about the biopsy is well-founded. Also, even if slight damage is clearly evident, some pathologists refuse to label it celiac disease because the villi are not totally flattened. Personally, I think this approach is about a idiotic as refusing to consider a woman pregnant until she reaches her due date! Regarding the blood... -
ARCHIVED Wierd Symptoms - Celiac?
seeking-wholeness replied to swimmer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
swlmmer, Your symptoms most certainly could be caused by celiac disease, and unfortunately, your being gluten-free when you were tested may have skewed the results. If you are eating gluten again now, you might want to have the tests repeated, but to be honest, they are no where near as reliable as doctors would like you to believe. A biopsy, too, may... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do?
seeking-wholeness replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have used Johnson & Johnson 24-hour soothing body lotion (or something like that) for myself and my kids, and I haven't noticed any reactions to it. There is a post regarding Oil of Olay (under gluten-free Products) that implies that traces of gluten MAY be found in the fragrances used in the products (which are proprietary, of course), but that... -
ARCHIVED Gf Spouse W/o Cd Now Reacting To Gluten?
seeking-wholeness replied to healthy1's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow is right! This is great! It's SOOO much easier (and inherently safer) to keep the whole house gluten-free, and now you don't have to feel guilty about it! Good luck to you both as you settle in to a totally new routine! -
ARCHIVED Reporting An Abuser
seeking-wholeness replied to angel-jd1's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
When a person hits the "report" button, does it automatically send you a notification of which post the user was reading at the time, or does the person actually have to type in a complaint and send it off? I'm just curious; I know that I DID accidentally hit the "report" button once, and I apologize if it created a nuisance for the moderators. I'll certainly... -
ARCHIVED Diagnoised Celiac But With No Biopsy
seeking-wholeness replied to weebitts36's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Mariann! Woo-hoo! gluten-free FOREVER!!! You must feel like dancing for joy! Visiting family just seems to be a sticky (glutinous??? ) mess in general. When we visit my in-laws, we usually stay for a long weekend. I think next time (my first visit since going gluten-free) I will make and freeze double recipes of gluten-free entrees to... -
ARCHIVED Going Gluten Free ?
seeking-wholeness replied to SteveW's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Steve, Because mass-produced chickens cook up rubbery and tasteless, many manufacturers inject the flesh with either a brine solution or chicken broth to improve their flavor and texture. These may contain gluten, especially the broth. I'm not sure how the label must be worded, but I know I have seen "with natural flavors added" or some such phrase on... -
ARCHIVED Diagnoised Celiac But With No Biopsy
seeking-wholeness replied to weebitts36's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
jmik, I agree with you about the biopsy usually if not always being unnecessary, and I wish it would be removed from the "gold standard" for diagnosis. (I think stool testing should be used in place of blood work, too, since it is more sensitive.) The financial incentive will probably prevent this, though, at least for a long time. I also agree with... -
ARCHIVED Totally Confused
seeking-wholeness replied to marythemom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
marythemom, Welcome to the board! Yes, celiac disease is genetic, but your doctor CAN'T rule it out based only on the lack of "classic" symptoms in family members! Too many cases are atypical, or even symptomless, for this approach to be reliable. There IS a gene test available (even in mainstream medicine, I believe) that would give you a definite... -
ARCHIVED Safe Antibiodics?
seeking-wholeness replied to granny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Granny, Yes, acidophilus is a probiotic. I'm glad it's helping you! Maybe the gluten-free diet will help reduce the frequency of your respiratory problems, so you won't have to stay on the "antibiotic treadmill" for much longer. I agree with you, though--it's just a good idea in general to know your blood type. After you get it tested, have a look... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Other Than Gastro
seeking-wholeness replied to tagger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I remember a thread about this very topic. It would be an interesting read, I'm sure; it had collected a number of replies last time I looked! I hope this helps. -
ARCHIVED Msg
seeking-wholeness replied to Lorrie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think that MSG is one of those things that can be made from wheat OR a non-gluten grain (like corn). I suspect that MSG is fine if it is made in the US (where corn is king), but suspect if it comes from another country. I'm not sure about this, though. -
ARCHIVED Juice Plus Vitamins
seeking-wholeness replied to DMCrawford's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
NO!!! Barley bran and oat bran are NOT safe for celiacs! I don't know what that company thinks it's doing claiming that those vitamins are gluten-free. (Barley, wheat, and rye GRASSES are theoretically safe for us, BUT cross-contamination is way too likely for me to actually choose to consume any.) I hope this helps! -
ARCHIVED Help Confused
seeking-wholeness replied to hillary-h's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hillary, oops, I already replied to you on the endoscopy report thread before I noticed this post, so see that thread for my input! I hope you have a good day! -
ARCHIVED What Is Usual For Endoscopy Report?
seeking-wholeness replied to ryebaby0's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hillary, It's difficult to come to terms with the prospect of having to deal with celiac disease, especially in your child! Take it one day at a time, and give yourself a chance to grieve and adjust. Your world just turned upside down, and it probably feels like nothing will ever be normal again. With time, you will be able adapt to your new lifestyle... -
ARCHIVED Vitamins And Spices
seeking-wholeness replied to soul04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have read (on the old board) that McCormick is planning to change their manufacturing procedure sometime this month so their spices will NO LONGER be processed on a dedicated gluten-free line! I have not called them yet to verify this. I am considering expressing my displeasure with that idea using my consumer dollars, regardless of whether they actually... -
ARCHIVED Why Are Some Topics Pinned?
seeking-wholeness replied to soul04's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I've been using the "Today's Active Topics" feature to double-check that I have read everything, and I always find a few threads that I missed. I'm curious about the "Pinned" topics, too. -
ARCHIVED Safe Antibiodics?
seeking-wholeness replied to granny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Granny, Antibiotics may very well do that to you, even if they are gluten-free. They undoubtedly save many lives, but their main drawback is that they can't distinguish between "friendly" bacteria, which live in our colons and help our digestion function efficiently, and the invaders that need to be thrown out. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria in sight... -
ARCHIVED Brewer's Yeast
seeking-wholeness replied to aldociao's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Aldo, I think you are right about the forbidden list referring to the brewer's yeast that is a by-product of the brewing industry. Primary-grown yeast (often called nutritional yeast) should be gluten-free unless a gluten-containing ingredient is added to the formulation. I personally use KAL brand yeasts, both fortified ("Vegetarian Support Formula... -
Mariann, excellent point! I am casein-free, but I forget to mention it anymore (can you believe that?!). That may very well be why tummy rumbling is so reliable a predictor of a gluten accident for me!

ARCHIVED Going Gluten Free ?
seeking-wholeness replied to SteveW's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Dawn! My computer is having virus trouble and I don't want to infect your computer, so I'll just reply on the board for now. The website for the Blood Type Diet is Open Original Shared Link, although the detailed food lists are not included on the site for copyright reasons. (Isn't it crazy that the author of the book has to ask the publisher for... -
ARCHIVED Cd, Hepatitis And Immunosuppresants
seeking-wholeness replied to umahal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
umahal, Welcome to the board! Your personal and family histories certainly make ME suspect that you have celiac disease! All the pieces fit together so neatly, except for the negative blood work! It's true that your being on a gluten-free or nearly-gluten-free diet may have skewed the results, and I suspect the immunosuppressants may have contributed...
