    The Beginning

I started out doing the same thing you're doing - checking products on-line, e-mailing and calling companies and keeping a 3-ring binder with all my info, including the lists from this site for "safe" and "forbidden" foods. I bought a Palm Pilot PDA and transferred all my data onto it. It is so great; much more convenient than carrying...
  2. What? Why don't you eat? How long have you been not eating? How long do you intend to not eat?
  3. the rain is gone. I can see all obstacles in my way... I got contact lenses. This has been a difficult couple of years for me, vision-wise. I've always had great vision and didn't have to wear glasses or contacts up until I was about 40 or so. I had to get some reading glasses. Since then, my vision has gotten worse and I've need some correction...

    New To This

I agree about the bread. Most of it is awful. I use Chebe bread almost exclusively. It's different than regular bread, of course, but if you get creative, it is very versatile. I order it by the case on-line: http://www.chebe.com/ There is another mix out there that I've tried and it was pretty decent. The problem is, I bought it freshly baked...

    Need Bread Recipe

Chebe bread. http://www.chebe.com/ I've read that about 50% of people with celiac disease are lactose intolerant, but that it goes away after implementing the gluten-free diet. That was the case for my son who was lactose intolerant. After being on the gluten-free diet a couple of years, his lactose intolerance went away. He can eat any dairy he...
  6. Hmm, interesting. My mother's doctor told her that if she has the gene, she has celiac disease. But...what do doctors know?
  7. "Carrier" for celiac disease? Never heard of that. As far as I know, if you have the gene, you have celiac disease whether or not you have noticeable symptoms. And you can pass that gene on to all or some of your children. My mother has celiac disease and 3 of her 4 children have it. Both of my kids have celiac disease and I have celiac disease...

    New Here

Celiac disease can affect mood and cause several (maybe all) of the symptoms you mentioned, but I don't really have experience with that. My kids have celiac disease, but as far as I know, they had normal kid behavior except my daughter was the opposite and would hardly eat a thing. This blog board is pretty slow. I think you'd get much more response...

    Holiday Menu

I'm not having many people for the holidays, so I'm just going to keep it simple and easy. There will be ten of us, so I just bought two turkey breasts rather than a whole turkey. I'll also make mashed potatoes and cornbread dressing. Mom is bringing sweet potatoes. I can't decide whether to just have a tossed salad or make some other green vegetable...

    What To Eat/

I replied to you, but it doesn't show up. Maybe you don't have the reply feature enabled or something. Check your personal page to see if it showed up there.

    What To Eat/

Oh my, where do you live? If you live near me, come to my house and I'll feed you, seriously. I'm in the Dallas, TX area. First of all, the corn flakes and the granola bar probably had gluten in them. Almost all of the mainstream cereals have gluten in some form - usually barley malt (often listed as just "malt"). Start by eating simple things like...

    Hawaii Bound

My first child has flown the nest. She is moving to Hawaii. I drove with her to California so that she could ship her car from there. Then I flew home by myself. I can't go in her room yet. I know it was past time for her to go, but it still hurts.

    Doctor Issues...

My mother-in-law has DH and her's breaks out on knees and elbows, too. Hers itches, though. I'm guessing that you are pretty young if your only response to gluten has been a non-itchy breakout - late teens, early twenties? If you have DH, then you have celiac disease. celiac disease is genetic, so if you have it, there is more than a 50% chance...
  14. Hi Anna's Mom, I've been gluten-free for about four years (I've lost track of time ). It does get easier as time goes on. I don't know how it is for small children since mine were teens when they were diagnosed, but I imagine that in one sense it will be easier on your daughter because she won't have settled into a diet filled with gluten. By the time she...

    Freak Cold

I'm home from my California T-giving holiday. I survived. I'm really bummed, though. I haven't had a cold/sinus infection/flu or anything like that since going on the gluten-free diet almost four years ago. I don't know if it's a coincidence or if it actually has something to do with gluten. Anyway, I was beginning to think I was immune and was...
  16. Well, Thanksgiving is almost upon us and for the first time in my life I'm dreading it. It's my favorite holiday, one in which I've almost always spent with my parents, brothers and sisters, and their children. For the last 15 +/- years they've all come to my house for the holiday. Our numbers have dwindled somewhat because of children growing up, going...
  17. Well, I am happy to report that all of the food I bought at the gluten-free store is good. The Glutino crackers are excellent. They're a cross between a saltine and a Ritz. The bread, made from amaranth flour is pretty decent, too. Not like wheat bread, mind you, but good enough to enjoy. And the Glutino cereal tasted sort of like a mix between Honey...

    Hello Everyone

Oh, believe me, I have seen the resistance to a possible celiac disease diagnosis in my own family and friends. Some of them embraced it immediately because they felt so much better eating gluten-free, but others of them will not hear of the possibility and some have resisted, but finally came around. What I found so incomprehensible about my friend...

    Hello Everyone

I have no problem believing that asthma can be related to food intolerances, specifically gluten or wheat. I have an acquaintance who had a similar experience - very bad asthma for 50 yrs., in and out of hospitals, specialists, could barely walk to the mailbox, was becoming housebound. When he went off wheat his recovery was astounding. I thought he...
  20. Are you talking about the Food for Life website? If so, then yes, their gluten free items are gluten free. But the Ezekiel bread itself is not...unless they have a new one that I don't know about. I don't think that is the case, though, because the Ezekiel bread, based on a Scripture in the Bible, has wheat and barley in it. It wouldn't be "Ezekiel" bread...

    All Gluten Free

While browsing the on-line gluten-free store, I came across a site that gave the name and address of a local store that sells a certain bread mix. As an aside, it said that the store has freshly baked gluten-free bread. So today I decided to check it out. The place is called Delicious & Fit (stupid name if you ask me). Anyway, I was a little confused...
  22. For some things, it's cheaper to buy on-line, especially if you buy in bulk. I buy most of my food from our local Kroger and Whole Foods. The only thing I buy regularly on-line are cases of Chebe bread. I ordered some bagels and bread a week or so ago, just to try something new. I'm sorry I did now because I found a local store/restaurant in which every item...
  23. Yeah, and I live in Texas. A bakery in California wouldn't do me much good.
  24. The list on the link below says that all wines are gluten-free. Maybe it was something that you ate with the wine that made you sick?
  25. I think you'll find it easier to maintain your gluten-free diet if you plan ahead rather than trying to grab something on the spur of the moment. If you already have something gluten-free on hand to eat, you'll be less likely to cheat. Kroger is getting better and better about stocking gluten-free items. The Debole's rice pastas are passable...
