  1. Thank you both for the replies, I will check out the website and will mention to my dr. about the thyroid. I was on 125mcg daily for quite a few years while living outside the country, but most GP's in the U.S. are reluctant to prescribe because of the 0-4.0 scale that I thought was still the norm. @Roda, I have slacked off the exercise lately too, extremely...
  2. I need advice. I am a lifetime weight watcher member who has can't seem to get back on track and am over goal by about 15 lbs. Initially in Jan. when I went gluten-free I lost about 6-7 lbs which I have regained I can't seem to get back on the wagon with WW because somewhere in my head I quit worrying about points, calories, and fat, and was focused only...
  3. My daughter and I went to a Mexican restaurant on Friday. Luckily my waitress was really good, she had a list of a few things which were considered safe, but then warned me that they did not have a dedicated fryer, (they fry their own taco shells, etc.) so the risk of cc was high. I ended up having a cup of tortilla soup without the tortilla strips, which...
  4. I'm like you in that I'm not so sensitive that I notice cross contamination. I'm the only gluten-free one and did buy myself a toaster, have my own jar of peanut butter, butter, jelly, mayo, etc. I haven't replace any cookware or utensils. I figured that the dishwasher would take care of everything. I haven't claimed my own shelf as all the food is sealed...
  5. I love the Kinnikinnick bread, it is wonderful. I have used it as toast as well as a regular sandwich/hamburger bun. It is expensive, around $6 a loaf, but it is very satisfying so you are not eating a lot every day. I recently bought the Kinnikinnick bread and roll mix and have been making bread once a week, which cuts the cost to about $3 per loaf. I use...
  6. I just picked up at my local Books-A-Million a copy of Allergy-Free Cookbook, Gluten,Dairy,Egg, Nut,I couldn't find an author but the publisher is Publications International, Ltd. It was on the clearance rack for $9, it is by far the best Cookbook I have bought with gluten-free recipes. The recipes are simple and although it is only 138 pages, at least 2...
  7. I bought the Triumph gluten-free grocery guide when I was first diagnosis ed, the book was wonderful but I found that after a couple of weeks it was easier to rely on the Google search bar or call the 800# because I kept forgetting to take the book with me, and I knew the safe items. You may want to go to some of your favorite products websites and just download...
  8. I'm the same, first the excessive hunger starts and then the migraines come back again. I'm currently trying to locate what is getting me right now, but have been totally unsuccessful. I think it is just the handling on bread for the rest of my family.
  9. If your results are negative you might still want to do conventional testing. I ordered three of the kits to test my children with. Sadly I did not read the website well enough and didn't realize at the time that the test only looked at one marker.I found I was positive (through a celiac panel at my doctors office) after my brother was diagnosised and wanted...
  10. I posted this in the new products forum and then realized I should have put it here. I am in love with kinnikinnick products and just received 6 bags of bread and roll mix I had ordered. I have basic bread down pat but I would like recipes for muffins (maybe blueberry, yum) but don't want to experiment due to the cost of this mix (about $6 a bag).Sadly their...
  11. I am in love with kinnikinnick products and just received 6 bags of bread and roll mix I had ordered. I have basic bread down pat but I would like recipes for muffins (maybe blueberry, yum) but don't want to experiment due to the cost of this mix (about $6 a bag).Sadly their website is not very user or help friendly. Does anyone have any great recipes they...
  12. I understand the slapping part, the doctor who refused to test me for celiac used those numbers (along with my weight) to point out to me that I was too healthy to worry about being tested. How long did it take you to start absorbing nutrients again? I stick with fruits, veg, and meats about 98% of the time. The only specialty foods (or packaged foods) I...
  13. I have been gluten free for 6 months now and it is going really well. I just had repeat blood work done and had been warned that my low cholesterol numbers would probably rise after being on the diet for awhile. All the blood work came back great, including those related to my anemia, except cholesterol which dropped even more my triglycerides are now less...
  14. I have only neurological symptoms--migraines, dizziness, nausea (migraine aura) and I feel spacy with brain fog. I'm not super sensitive but if I am exposed I have a migraine within an hour. I do handle bread and other gluten products for my family, I just wash my hands immediately after handling, I do not use flour or non-gluten-free products that I might...
  15. I know how you feel. The first couple of months after I found out I had celiac I felt wonderful following the diet. Now 6 months in I'm exhausted. I'm taking several different vitamins as well as iron but I'm just dragging. I'm not hungry all the time anymore but I don't seem to be getting any nutritional benefits from the food I eat. I eat very few specialty...
  16. Ours is in the health food section. Our town is quite small (25,000 or so) but we have a large retirement community so our selection is really high for a small town. They offer enough products that I don't have to drive 2 hours to an Earth Fare. If you have one in your area ask the manager for products. Our manger told me his department heads take training...
  17. My local Kroger just added Kinnikinnick pizza crust to their gluten-free selection. I could not believe how good they were. My non-celiac husband tried a piece and couldn't tell the difference between it and reg crust. They come 4 to a box (a very lg individual size)and cost around $8 in our area. I am going to try it with cinnamon and sugar for breakfast...
  18. Thank you Smithk6 your post was just what I needed this morning. I am a lifetime WW member that is now above goal. Your words about feeling sorry for yourself really hit me hard because it is so true. I've been gluten-free for about 6 weeks now, I had no GI symptoms (but did have brain fog, migraines, and fatigue) and was just picked up with screening after...
  19. Thank you for remembering the episode. I pulled it up and it is called L-caratine (sp?) It helps with fat metabolism which helps in energy production. It makes sense since we can't absorb fat or the vitamins that go with it, at least before our intestinal linings are healed. I'm already on an Antioxidant, iron, B-complex, fish oil, and iron supplement,(for...
  20. After my brother was diagnosed and I then tested positive my sister was tested. Her doctor ran 3 test and these are the results. Her dr. says she negative and no further follow up is needed. I had like 6 different types of test, my brother had even more. Is this enough to tell and if so is she definitely negative for celiac/gluten intolerance? Igh negative...
  21. I'm sorry total brain fog this morning. When I noticed the post I remembered how excited I was to find puff pastry when I moved back to the U.S. Sadly I forgot for a moment things like puff pastry have to be prefaced by gluten free now I'm 3 weeks in and still getting use to the gluten-free way of thinking.
  22. Our local Wal-mart and Kroger both carry it.
  23. I use rice chex crumbs when I make Chicken Parmesan. My non-gluten free family could not tell the difference.
  24. We all know how the insurance companies protect their interest which brings me to my children. I have a 21 year old who is constantly fatigued and has migraines, a 19 year old who a couple of years ago lost about 30 lbs in 6 weeks, most of his hair and although he has stopped losing weight he can't get above about 165 (5'11) he often has to leave the table...
