  1. Hi Jen, I left my job too about 9 mos after diagnosis and being absolutely burnt out - not at work specifically, just very run down. I got sick every month with a cold or flu - and this was in the summer! Others things were going wrong too, of course. The whole thing was very stressful - would I make it to work, did I need to find a sub, would I last...
  2. Rebecca, My heart goes out to you. I understand your thing with the dairy. I had the same experience. Tried going dairy free twice (a month each). Both times I lost weight, got leg cramps, and was exhausted and starving no matter what I ate. I chalked it up to calories and maybe calcium, as I'm also vegetarian and don't eat a lot of calories in general...

    ARCHIVED Anyone Ttc?

Oh, phooh, it's whatever you feel like are up to. If you feel geared up for preg, go for it. If you are tired and exhausted and can't imagine carrying an extra 30 pounds and having weird dietary cravings, then wait Folic acid is recommended to all women ttc, because it's effect is greatest between 0-4 months of preg, and once you've realized you're...
  4. Hello? Did I scare everyone away with my food rant, lol? So unless uclangel has trouble, I think we are decided on SATURDAY, SEPT. 3, 1-3pm Yes? And is my place ok with everyone?? Near Sunset/Fairfax. If so, I'll pm or email directions to: Elonwy, Smith, Tarnalberry, and Uclangel. If you are in Los Angeles and want to come, and are...
  5. Why is it that when I first came down with symptoms - including major ongoing nausea, no doctor *ever* mentioned to me that there were drugs for this??? (insert rant here, lol) For over a year I carried around bottles of Emetrol (?) - a sugar syrup OTC thing that sort of worked. Traditional Chinese Medicine is what finally cleared up the bulk of those...
  6. www.tropicaltraditions.com makes a good unscented (or scented) hand/face lotion. I get it online. Merika
  7. Yep, it's in many many soups. Even lentil soups if you eat out, even if the sauce isn't white, even if it looks clear. It's added as a thickener. Somewhere, someone should write a modest length book about cooking processes, so we can all learn about this stuff somewhere.... Merika
  8. We ate Tinkyada when I first went gluten-free. Then we tried eventually all the rice noodles at the local Whole Foods store. Rizopia pasta is better! Recently, I found a bag of Tinkyada, and i thought they were kind of slimy....Made it twice and threw the rest of the bag out! So either it doesn't keep well, or there is better stuff out there Merika
  9. It sounds like maybe she is getting gluten somewhere. Levels should be normal within 6-12 months, but I would think even sooner for a kid. 12 months is the max I think, and considered somewhat long. Look at other kids for sources, crumbs, things on the floor, hand lotion YOU use, hair products, play dough, etc. Merika
  10. I suppose a 3 month old could have a wheat allergy, though.... Merika
  11. Thanks! See what bothers me is the implication that it's best to introduce gluten between 4-6 months, when really all the study shows is that it's preferable than introducing it at 0-3 months of age. I don't think they really had enough babies/kids in older groups. Maybe, as ktm posted, a better time to introduce it is after age 2. The thing is *we just don...
  12. If you want to make your breastmilk gluten-free, you must eat gluten-free. There is conflicting scientific evidence about this, as not ALL women seem to pass allergens/proteins through their breastmilk, and very few studies have really been done on breastfeeding in general. (hmmmm...could it be cause it's free? ) There is a new study out that shows...
  13. Yep, I've made rice crispie treats for all birthdays since my ds was 2. He likes them Actually, everyone likes them! And you can stick candles in too. Merika PS. make sure to get gluten-free rice puffs! We like the gluten-free ones from Erewhon - they're the most like rice crispies but without the sugar. Yum.
  14. The *new* AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommendations are to breastfeed EXCLUSIVELY until age 6 months. So that would mean no gluten under age six months. Studies also show the longer you breastfeed, the less likelihood your child will contract celiac (diminish NOT eliminate risk). As for the studies that show the 4-6 month "window", I think there...
  15. Just a thought....could you go to the ice cream store and buy a pint of the flavor you want (and not eat the whole thing obviously)? Would it be safe then from scoop contamination? Merika
  16. So how is 1-3 then? Of course, we can go later if we want, I just like the time bracketed so if anyone's late they know if it's still worthwhile to come or not.... I also like it not dependent on the lunch hour - my own personal preference. Maybe I am alone in that....but me & food have a long history of not mixing so well As for food, I don...
  17. I've noticed products now listing more info on the eight common allergens, I assume in anticipation of new labeling laws. I bought a Trader Joe's chocolate bar that appears gluten-free. Under the ingredients listing it says "Made on equipment shared with wheat, nuts, etc etc". Previously, it wouldn't have said this, and I would have eaten the chocolate...
  18. Hi, I'm almost always in support of folks being tested before going gluten-free. In your case, I would wonder too about you being celiac. It is an easy test to do. If your results are positive, you'll have a better indicator for your son too, because this disease runs in families. If you are gluten-free for a few days before your test, no big deal. A few...
  19. Yes, you can try the diet for free But $700 for the test??????? Promethius Labs in San Diego (one of the best labs around for celiac) charges only $200 something for the full panel. Mind you, you still have to add the doctors visit for the blood draw. I think my dh paid $35 extra for that. Check around, because that price seems outrageous. Promethius...
  20. What sort of allergy tests were run? I think the ELISA blood tests are more accurate than the RAST tests or skin tests. I don't remember mango being tested on my food allergy test.....I'm pretty sure it wasn't. As Tiffany says, celiac is not an allergy and won't show up there. It has it's very own blood panel test. It is possible to not show an allergy...
  21. Ok! How about Sat. Sept. 3 then? How about meet at my place? We can have all to ourselves that day. It's near Sunset/Fairfax and easy from the valley off the 101. Tiffany will have a little bit of a drive, but not too bad. What time?? I say sometime between 11 and 5pm. 2-4? Earlier? Later? And how about, if you want, bring your favorite...

    ARCHIVED Gf Foods

Some celiacs initially have trouble with ALL grains. If your villi are messed up, you may not digest any of them well, and have just built up a certain tolerance level for wheat, the one you are most accustomed to. Go with what your belly is telling you and try again in 6-9 months with the exotic flours. You may have better luck then. I don't mean to...
  23. I think the important part is "can be" inaccurate. There are many toddlers who DO get diagnosed with a test. Just consider a negative result not a super-firm answer. A positive is still a positive. Merika
  24. Hmmm.. I'll have to check that out Since I avoid a bunch of ingredients besides gluten, my pumpkin pie is just pie filling poured into fancy individual ramekins - no crust! and still very tasty.... Merika
  25. Hi, I see you are getting the same response from everyone here, and maybe it's not what you're looking for? I too would recommend all of your mother's immediate family being tested, as there is a 1 in 10 chance any of you could have it (far different than the 1 in 133 for the general population). My mother was diagnosed several years ago too. She...
