ARCHIVED Which Tests And What Age
Merika replied to siouxsie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Are your kids gluten-free now? If this is the case, I was told they need to eat gluten every day for SIX months. My ds (age 3) is gluten-free, but hasn't been tested. I am debating when to put him on gluten and test. Right now we are trying to clear soy out of him (allergy), but it is insidious and dh (DH!) gave him a chip at a party last Saturday without... -
ARCHIVED Glue Stick Gf?
Merika posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I've read people talking about glue being gluten-free or not. My dh brought home a glue stick for our gluten-free ds, age 3 that is Office Depot brand. I have talked to people at 3 different office depot phone numbers, and no one seems to know the ingredients. Does anyone here know if it's gluten-free? Thanks, Merika -
ARCHIVED Tomato Paste--is It Ok?
Merika replied to cgd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Corn pasta in elbow shape makes the BEST macaroni, though, mmmmmm...my non-celiac dh even prefers it over the wheat pasta, lol Merika -
ARCHIVED Kettle Brand Chips, And All Of Their Products
Merika replied to FaithInScienceToo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Gina, Well, this may be celiac sacrilige, but my gluten-free son eats those Kettle Chips. I talked with the company and ONE of their flavored products in ONE size bag uses wheat. They run the plain chips before they run the flavored ones, and they wash the lines too. They told me they decided to take a hard-core stance on the gluten issue. This... -
ARCHIVED Questioning Diagnosis
Merika replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A little over the #s is over the numbers. Mine was over the adult limit by maybe 2 or 3, my mom's was over by about 30. It all means positive. I felt sicker than she did, and have been having major celiac problems for longer than her. Welcome to the board Merika -
ARCHIVED Suspecting Celiac Disease--not Sure
Merika replied to cgd's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi C, LOL, i had my first oops-screw-up at an asian restaurant too. I thought I was being so careful, and avoided the soy sauce, but ordered miso soup (barley!!!). Doh! Live and learn. Merika -
ARCHIVED Do My Symptoms Sound Familiar
Merika replied to johnm's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, My celiac problems started with a bang seemingly out of the blue when I was 19, just before senior yr of college. I missed the first few weeks of that year, and only took 2 classes each semester, and it was a super struggle just to get to class. Looking back (which I just did recently), there were probably small signs of celiac all the way growing... -
ARCHIVED Problem With Digestive Enzymes
Merika replied to steve-o's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I think we celiacs are just super-sensitive. The one you tried had a lot of ingredients, possibly all beneficial enzymes, but it may be just too much for your body right now. I've had great luck with the first one I tried (Standard Process Inc.'s Cholacol - go online to find someone who sells it). I had terrible luck with 3 other of their gluten... -
I wouldn't bother with gene tests if you have a positive diagnosis, for you or your son. Those are mainly for people who test negative, but think they might have it, or want to know if they *might* get a positive result in the future. Do the celiac blood test on your son. First degree relatives have a 1 in 10 chance of having celiac, high enough to merit...

ARCHIVED What Can I Fix Son For Lunch?
Merika replied to Ann1231's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tarnalberry, I want you to pack MY lunch! Merika -
KayJay, oooh, how exciting, you're about to have a baby, lalalala.... Bummer about the morning sickness Recent studies have shown that there is no extra risk for babies of celiac moms. None, zero, nada, zip. There MAY be an increased risk of EARLY miscarriage among non gluten-free celiac moms. But once past that, the baby will be fine. You...

ARCHIVED Where Do I Begin Being Gluten-free?
Merika replied to Suezboss's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Suez, i don't know about margarine. Probably some is and some isn't. I just advise staying away from all factory-produced frankenstein foods. If the box has ingredients that you don't have in your own pantry, stay away from it until you find out what it is. Cocoa is fine. What it's mixed with is another matter. There is lots of gluten-free chocolate... -
ARCHIVED What To Do? My Story Thus Far
Merika replied to swingerofbirches's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi swingerofbirches, It sounds like your doc knows very little of celiac, and it also seems to run in your family (or wheat allergies, which I think are related). If I go back to pre-diagnosis, and read the list of celiac symptoms, the only one I have in spades is anxiety, and that one's not even on all the symptom lists. Truth be told, I have MANY... -
My ds has soy allergy. Symptoms can vary a lot from person to person, as with any food allergy. Actually, according to the food allergy test I had run, I'm allergic to soy too. Can't tell you what my symptoms are though, as I'm allergic to about 45 things according to the test. I can tell you that eggs gave me anxiety the day after eating them, and I tested...

Well, we've been thinking about it, but are not up to it yet. FWIW, I was not gluten-free during my pregnancy 4 yrs ago and was very celiac (can one be "very" celiac?). Oddly, I instinctively went off grains the first 3 months, ate erratically the middle 3, and felt better than I had in YEARS. Don't ask me about the last 3 months of preg, they were filled...

ARCHIVED I Need Advice
Merika replied to nadinec's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sore stomach....peppermint, as in candies and tea. There was a thread here a while back on everyone's favorite form of peppermint Also, ginger tea (cut up about 3 quarter-size (as in coin) pieces and steep in hot/boiling water for 10 minutes, don't cook it). Hth, Merika -
ARCHIVED Where Do I Begin Being Gluten-free?
Merika replied to Suezboss's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Start with whole foods that you have in your pantry. Potatoes (not in a box or bag, just the potato) and rice (again, not from a flavored box/bag/freezer) for starch. Fruits and plain vegetables (steamed or sauteed with PURE olive oil or butter, not margarine or vegetable oils). Plain meats cooked in a pan or on a very very clean grill and eggs and beans... -
ARCHIVED Juice Boxes & Rice Milk Boxes
Merika replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Definitely gluten-free are the little water bottles. This is my 3 yr old's preferred drink when out of the house. And none of that nasty sugar.... Merika -
ARCHIVED 13mnth Old Test Negative For Celiac
Merika replied to guzelda's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've heard too that testing under age 2 or 3 is not as reliable as adults. If you want to try the gluten-free diet for your ds, you will need to be on it too, just as you're already avoiding the eggs, etc. Kudos to you for trying to figure it all out. It's hard. Have you also looked into the eight common allergens? Google the term for info. It may be your... -
ARCHIVED This Is Ridiculous, Everything Has Gluten In It.
Merika replied to groogle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, It takes a while to get used to, and it takes a while to find the best stores, restaurants, and support groups/people near you. I would think there must be stuff in Ireland because recent research has shown that Ireland has THE HIGHEST rate of celiac anywhere in the world - 1 in 50 people. For the USA it's 1 in 133. So you should be in good company... -
ARCHIVED Could My Daughter Have Celiac? Constant Hunger
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Shannon, Ouch! Call the gi guy repeatedly until you get in. And while you're at it, ask your friend's for ped referrals and call them to get in. Be pushy. You are your daughter's only advocate. My mother and I would never have been diagnosed if she hadn't done all the research to find celiac, been insistant that the doc test her, and for that matter... -
ARCHIVED My 12 Yr. Old Was Dx. Today
Merika replied to AnnieMarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome Annie It is a big adjustment, but nice in a weird way. It's great you caught it when you did. He will be feeling much better much faster than those of us diagnosed as adults and sick for a long time. And, by catching it and going on a gluten-free diet now, anecdotal evidence shows that he will be more likely to comply than if it'd been diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED 10 Month Allergic To Everything Need Help!
Merika replied to Hennessey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hennessey, Actually, you can. And that is exactly how you'd do it. Bet you didn't know that, eh Contact me offlist (or here) if you are seriously interested. It takes dedication, yet is possible. Also, a La Leche League Leader should be able to give you info (I say "should" because all the ones I know have this info, but I don't know if ALL of them out... -
ARCHIVED I'm Sure This Could Be Many Things, But....
Merika replied to Joy2BMommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You are an experienced mom, trust your gut. It's not normal for a one yr old to have 5-7 bm's a day. It could be celiac. It could be something else. When we talked with a celiac expert about testing, she said a toddler needs to be eating the equivalent of ONE slice of bread a day - it has to do with body size. (Kaiti, maybe your info is for adults?) I... -
ARCHIVED Could My Daughter Have Celiac? Constant Hunger
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Laurie, Interesting link. Can you believe the part that said only 45-80% of celiac disease children adhere to the gluten-free diet ?!?!?!?! OMG Merika
