ARCHIVED Brewer's Yeast
Merika replied to ashlee's mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm assuming you make your own pet food? Because store-bought pet food all contains wheat, last I checked.... Merika -
ARCHIVED Need A Doctor In The S. Cal - San Gabriel Valley
Merika replied to DMCrawford's topic in Doctors
I've heard great things about Dr. Edward Feldman from my family. I think he's at Cedars-Sinai in West Hollywood. Sorry I don't have a number handy. Can I ask, after being diagnosed with celiac, what more is there really to know? I mean, you already know there's damage. Curious, because I've never had anything checked out in my gi other than having a blood... -

ARCHIVED Birthday Party's Are Hard For Mom
Merika replied to SofiEmiMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, well, my ds is just 3 yrs old, so it's not quite the same, but have you thought of doing something entirely different than cake? For his birthday last week we had rice crispie treats (made with gluten-free rice crispies). They taste the same as regular rice crispie treats and everyone at the party was thrilled with them. We also bring these... -
ARCHIVED Let's Give Some Good Shopping Advice
Merika replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Donna, Can you tell me more about your grain mill? Is it a regular flour mill, what kind, where did you get it, is it easy to clean (does it need to be cleaned?)? Thanks! Merika -
ARCHIVED A Good Gf Facial Moisturizer?
Merika replied to jmengert's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, There are lots of gluten-free moisturizers out there - just gotta read those long long labels..... Two very simple ones are Tropical Traditions - basically just coconut oil, wax and a few other ingredients that are not "scientific-y" sounding. The other is pure vaseline - not lotion by Vaseline, but actual petroleum jelly. A little goes a long... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried "special Foods Diet" Foods?
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi celiac3270, Yes, that would be great - move it to post-diagnosis I think I'll get better answers there. I can understand not wanting cross posts. Would it be ok if I posted a new question here in gluten-free Foods to find out about the taste of the products? Thanks, Merika -
Prenatal vitamins (any vitamins really) can make you sick and/or nauseus during pregnancy. Try another brand, try it with food like s.o. else suggested, or maybe just stop them for a few weeks and try again. They may not bother you once you're out of the first trimester. Best wishes, Merika

ARCHIVED Mom To Newly Diagnosed 6 Year Old
Merika replied to jmj0803's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you're looking for fiber (which may not be necessary) canned pumpkin is great, tastes good and kids like it (pets too, lol). I like to make "pumpkin pie". Get some Libby's plain pumpkin and semi-follow the recipe on the back. Our version goes something like this: can pumpkin egg(s) or egg replacer (however many it call for) use just 2/3 of amount... -
well, hopefully you are feeling better by now It is entirely possible to be vegetarian and pregnant. I was And don't worry about the protein for now. Follow your gut (haha) - I really mean it! Just listen to your body and it will tell you what you need to eat. If I recall correctly, the first trimester I ate mostly fruit (luckily it was summer), and...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried "special Foods Diet" Foods?
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I guess this has been UN-cross-posted, but the site is not just a place to buy food. It is an entire theory about how to rid oneself of allergies AND heal the body. It's not celiac-specific, but much of it falls into that category. This is why I wanted it cross-posted in the "Recovery" section. From the home page it says "The SF Comprehensive Intervention... -
ARCHIVED Spent The Morning In The Er!
Merika replied to mela14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Your symptoms sound similar to mine when I first started showing celiac symptoms - the ER, docs going "huh?", and so on. It went on for months. Finally I found an amazing traditional chinese doctor who restored my health partway, and I was able to semi-function in the world. 12 years later I was diagnosed celiac. There have been some good suggestions... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried "special Foods Diet" Foods?
Merika posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, A friend sent me this link Open Original Shared Link . Has anyone here heard of it or tried it? New to this topic/forum - Has anyone tried the breads or flours? What about making your own from ingredients at an ethnic grocer? Some of the ingredients sound pretty unusual, but I imagine I can find them here in Los Angeles. Thanks! Merika -
Congrats! I too didn't know I had celiac when pregnant. I think every pregnancy is different, at least that is the gist of things I get from most mom friends I have with 2+ kids. I would doubt it was celiac making you sick throughout your first two preg's, unless you were like that non-preg too, yk? My preg was pretty smooth, in fact I felt better than...

Beware of the new Pam spray with Flour - definitely NOT gluten-free. Merika -
ARCHIVED Nausea Meds
Merika replied to jknnej's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I hear ya on this one, lol! But then nausea was my main complaint before going gluten-free, too. Though it's different nausea now than then, if that makes any sense. Did you see the thread a while back on peppermint candies and tea? It won't cure anything, but might give you some temporary relief, just make sure they're gluten-free. Merika -
ARCHIVED Graduate School Reasearch In Education
Merika replied to hwaters34's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Heather, There is a book, available on this site and amazon I think, called "personal stories on celiac disease" or something. It is 3 page stories by all sorts of people on how they got diagnosed and their reactions and whatnot. There is a chapter written by people diagnosed as kids, and another chapter written by people diagnosed as teenagers. Very... -
ARCHIVED Will My Kids Have Cd Too?
Merika replied to newby's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Newby, I know it's easy to say, but don't sweat it There's no predicting this stuff. Anecdotally, I can tell you I have celiac, as does my mom, as did (we're pretty sure) her mom. We haven't tested my son yet, but he eats gluten free, and he's 3 yrs old and has a soy allergy and is otherwise healthy. I had NO problems getting pregnant - like 2 tries... -
ARCHIVED Celiac With No Symptoms?
Merika replied to healthyme's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
All this is probably not what you wanted to hear ..... but maybe this will give you a different perspective. If I could go back in time and get positive celiac diagnosis when i first exhibited symptoms - sudden weight loss, rapid heart rate, dizziness, hospitalization (with no ultimate diagnosis) - I would be immediately gluten-free and positively celebrating... -
ARCHIVED York Labs And Igg?
Merika replied to Melanie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know the answer to your question. I did an allergy test at York labs this winter though, and was not thrilled. It took over 2 months to get results back and I've yet to have anyone help with the "one year of free support" of getting answers to my questions. Let me know if you find somewhere better. I'd like to know. Thanks, Merika -
ARCHIVED Inhaled Gluten Cause Reaction?
Merika replied to SofiEmiMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I think it is excellent you are doing this for your daughter. It is very important to protect her from gluten in craft/cooking projects. Have you ever put flour in a mixer and watched it float up and everywhere - try it in a sunbeam and you'll see what I mean. As for inhalation, it *definitely* counts. Here's 2 recent stories: I was at a neighbor... -
ARCHIVED Any Ideas?
Merika replied to ashlee's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is a little out there, but yoghurt has acidophilus in it/added to it. Some folks just don't tolerate them well (like me), which I discovered by taking probiotics, which made me very very sick. My mom, also celiac, reacts too. Some strains are ok, some not, it depends what they're grown on, the phase of the moon (just kidding), and so forth. It's very... -
Hi Julie, I just remembered that Amy's brand at health food stores now has a few frozen dinners that are gluten-free. I tried a lasagna (didn't love it, but it was edible - but I'm not really a frozen dinner lover) and there was another one too....There are also gluten-free pizza crusts at Whole Foods that you just throw in the oven with whatever toppings...

Hi Julie, My thoughts go out to you and your mom. I'm not 100% sure, but yes i believe untreated celiac can lead to colon cancer. Which is one of the reasons (here's my rant ) of why *you should be eating gluten-free*. You will finish your master's with less stress, more energy, and more clear-headedness if you stick to being gluten-free. Really...

ARCHIVED Questions About Two Products
Merika replied to jmengert's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think you need to go product by product, not by brand. If you email or call the company (phone # usually listed on a product) they will often send you a list of ALL the ingredients they use in ALL there products, broken down by "derived from" items. For example, there will be a column labeled "wheat" and under that are all the scientific mumbo-jumbo names...
