  1. Not all substitute milks (rice, soy, etc) have casein. Definitely a physical check-up would be in order. Also, other food allergies can cause constipation. Soy, for example, can cause it. You might be fine with dairy, and it could be something else. .02, Merika

    ARCHIVED Funeral Food

Sorry to hear about your mom. I just was at a funeral/memorial service for a dear friend last weekend. I ate a few hours before, brought ricecakes with me (which was good because it went 2 hours later than planned), and ate immediately afterwards (leftover lasagne heated in the hotel microwave) before going back out with everyone to someone's house. I...
  3. Ah, potty training! You might want to check out the principles from a new/old method called elimination communication AKA natural infant hygiene. There is a website www.natural-wisdom.com that explains it well. I understand there will be an article coming out in People magazine soon as well on it, but the web site is probably more helpful. Parents of babies...
  4. Whole Foods in West Hollywood, CA is now carrying fresh gluten-free bakery items!! Here is an email I received from them listing their new products - let's go support them Merika * 987859 WHOLEFOODS BREAD-CORN/gluten-free 18 OZ ACTIVE 120 * 987867 WHOLEFOODS BREAD-BANANA/gluten-free 1 LB 2OZ ACTIVE 120 *...
  5. Hahaha, about the beer That's classic homebrew beer story, lol, I guess that says something about the state of gluten-free beer brewing! Merika
  6. It was so great meeting everyone who came!!!!!!! I was at the WeHo Whole Foods today and on a whim stopped by their bakery dept and they said *drum roll* starting today/tomorrow they will be carrying 19 NEW gluten-free fresh bakery items - breads, pies, pizza crusts, muffins - NINETEEN! So stop by and support them And happy eating Whole Foods...
  7. Hi Tangerine, I don't have any advice, but can tell you that the same thing happened with both me & my mom (also celiac). We felt sooo much better for several months after going gluten-free, then started to feel bad. My mom's been gluten-free now for 2 yrs and is feeling much better. I've been gluten-free for 1 1/2 yrs and am starting to feel better...
  8. Sorry, no advice, but I have had this same problem with medicines from China - incomplete labeling!!! Merika PS. maybe you could talk to a pharmacist there for help and translations?

    ARCHIVED Trouble With Doctors...

Hi Nini, Ouch, that sucks! It sounds like you might be able to talk with the school - they seem supportive. One letter should be sufficient! Even if it's from last year. If they absolutely have to have a fresh one every year, in a pinch I would consider the devious and dishonest forgery of last years letter with a little white out and a xerox copy ...
  10. Hi Kasey's mom As a fellow anti-soy mom, we just discovered that Pamela's has a SOYFREE chocolate cake mix I haven't seen it at our local WF yet, but it came in a frrebie box of goodies from Pamela's at our new local celiac meeting. I'm so excited to try it!!!!!!! Merika PS. Maya, if you're not going to duke it out with your dh over the...
  11. make sure those are GLUTEN FREE rice crispie treats!! Rice Krispie brand is NOT gluten free. Merika
  12. Hi Fran, The archives here have a wealth of info that you may find useful and maybe reassuring. Testing for kids under 2 (or maybe even 3) can be unreliable. Something is going on with your son, as you say. Since the tests did not give you a clear answer, i would try the diet for a month. Then see how he is. Feed him a gluten-rich meal at the end of the...
  13. Thank you!!!
  14. Is there somewhere in Davis to eat that is natural, healthy, and will reliably accomodate a gluten-free and more diet? Thanks, Merika
  15. Hi! I'm twenty-.....oh, wait, no I'm 32 I forgot But I did have undiagnosed celiac all through my twenties (from 19-31), and had restrictive diets during that time, and also was on near bed-rest for a while at first. It was really really hard. Welcome, and ask lots of questions here Are you in LA? We're having a meet soon. Merika
  16. Hi, Just going gluten-free is all you need to do for your pregnancy. Testing seems to be most accurate in the over age 3 group, less accurate between 2-3 yrs and even less accurate under age 2. So if your 2 boys are over 3, I would test them. If under 3, judge for yourself whether you see symptoms that warrant it. Merika
  17. Hi Lisa, Of course!!! Too bad you'll miss it, though. PM me with your email and keep an eye on the board for future stuff. Merika PS. Yea, Elonwy! Free grub (And I don't want your beer, thanks )
  18. The blood tests are very very accurate. The biopsies less so. Given your history, it seems prudent to go gluten-free. My grandmother (celiac) also had a hysterectomy, and I understand they are not uncommon in undiagnosed celiacs as a misguided "cure" for something. It seems you have nothing to lose by going gluten-free, and everything to gain. Go for...
  19. Thanks for the clarification I had only seen the gluten versions and the one plain gluten-free version. Merika
  20. I would have her tested too. The test should be accurate for age 4, and if you are concerned about symptoms, it will put your mind at rest. My ds is 3 1/2 and gluten-free, and also gets persnickety at times. Merika
  21. If he's being tested in the morning, just put him on a gluten-free diet immediately after the test. No need to wait for the results. The doc may have a fit later if they want to biopsy, but 1- you don't really need the biopsy and 2-if they're fast enough with it, being gluten-free for a week or two won't make a difference for the biopsy. Merika
  22. Lucy, I sometimes make pancakes in the middle of the day and refridgerate them for other breakfasts. I just got a griddle that goes over 2 burners so I can cook a bunch of them at once too. Btw, the plain erewhon rice puffs are pretty good and have no sugar, I believe, and my ds loves them. Merika
  23. Really? The only Erewhon rice puffs I've seen that are gluten-free are plain and clearly state "Gluten Free" on the front. The other ones have gluten. Are you sure? Btw, me & ds (age 3) also hate Enviro- stuff. Merika
  24. I suppose a lot depends on age and what they've done previous halloweens. For our ds last year - age 2 then - we trick or treated like normal. When we got home we dumped it all out, looked at the colorful wrappers, sorted it, played with it, and a few days later got rid of it all, gluten-free or not Dh kept some hidden for himself to eat, and the rest...
  25. Hi Lisa, I'm not over 50, so don't meet your qualifications but if you are looking for more one-on-one stuff, you may want to investigate local celiac groups. The folks affiliated with them are generally very helpful, especially for local info, and will talk with you on the phone and answer any questions you have. At least, that has been my experience...
