ARCHIVED Help! Soy?!
Merika replied to chestnut's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Chestnut, There is no gluten in soy and having celiac does not mean you can't eat soy. What you are seeing on the boards is a lot of people who have additional food intolerances and soy is one of the "8 common allergens". It seems that celiac messes with the body and food allergies or intolerances result from it. Different people will have different... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Newly Diagnosed Starving?
Merika replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jerri, What your body did with food before going gluten free and what it does after going gluten free have nothing to do with each other. It's like feeding a whole different body, IMO. Or maybe several different bodies, lol, as you will heal and change and adapt along the way. Please don't freak out Merika -
ARCHIVED Anyone Newly Diagnosed Starving?
Merika replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey Dani, I wouldn't worry right now about gaining weight. Remember, celiac causes malabsorbtion, meaning you will eat but NOT ABSORB the fats and other nutrients. So if those labels or diet people say you should be eating 2000 calories or whatever a day, just throw that out, because who knows how much of that you're actually absorbing. You might want... -
ARCHIVED How Did You Acquire Celiac?
Merika replied to tasha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I "got" celiac when I was 19, just after a noxious combination of prescription drugs, one of which is now off the market (for side effects, and oh yeah, killing a few people). Hospitalized, weight loss, way off electrolytes, funky heart stuff...but nothing to get me diagnosed. That came 12 years later, after my mom was diagnosed and I got tested. Looking... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Doesn't "get It" How Do I Help Him Understand?
Merika replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Christine, I'm sorry to hear about your year - it sounds very stressful. It also sounds like you should be checked for celiac - the two things that leaped out at me were "hysterectomy" and "fibromyalgia". It's not uncommon for undiagnosed celiacs to need to be "treated" with a hysterectomy to solve something somewhat caused by the celiac. Of course... -
ARCHIVED Harry And David
Merika replied to hez's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tiffany, Mmmmmm, that looks good. And are those muffins I see with it (hint hint)? Do you mean to tell me you have a whole cook book online?? Ok, let's just get right down to it..... When are you going to move back to LA and open a restaurant???? Merika Ps. I'll be making that pumkin butter as soon as i get back from the store on grocery... -

ARCHIVED Harry And David
Merika replied to hez's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tiffany, Yum! How long does it keep in the fridge? And when you say a while to cook, do you mean like an hour or 6 hours or??? Thanks! Merika -
ARCHIVED Dx Kids Vs. Dx Adults.... Do Symptoms, Reactions To Gluten Differ
Merika replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Jnkmnky, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of these signs "made in a facility shared with wheat, etc..." now that the new labeling laws are going into effect. It does make me pause when i see it on a label, that's for sure. For the most part, though, I'll still eat it. I don't think it makes me sick. But then I'm not completely healthy (yet?) either... -
ARCHIVED Crunch Master Sesame Crackers
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Riceguy, Thanks for the link. Unified Products is who I called....and the publish date on the article link was 1999, so I guess the factory's not new....I'm gonna try calling information again next week....cause the new CrunchMasters just suck... Merika -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Without Any Peanuts/nuts!
Merika replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Interesting. I like the label - cute! Recently, I've also been eating the following "nut" butters: cassava butter, white sweet potato butter, arrowroot butter and malanga butter. They're from www.specialfoods.com . I put them on the corresponding bread (cassava bread, etc....). Almost everything they make is gluten-free. Merika -
ARCHIVED Vitamin E In Skin Products Etc
Merika replied to Matilda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I rarely ask because I also am allergic to soy, which is more typically the source of vitamin E. But you're right, wheat IS a source. And I avoid it religiously. Sometimes the company can tell you the source of the vitamin E (or whatever) - occasionally (rarely) it's synthetic. Merika -
ARCHIVED Make Up Questions
Merika replied to Matilda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi everyone and Kaseysmom especially I just want to toss in that lots of foundations are gluten free, you just need to read the labels. i have FINALLY found a gluten-free AND soy-free foundation by Allison Rafaelle! Available at Sephora. I think I will have to do some color mixing to perfect it, as it's only available in 5 shades, but so far it is working... -
ARCHIVED Crunch Master Sesame Crackers
Merika posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I've been eating Crunch Master Sesame rice crackers for months now and they are supremely delicious. BUT now they have changed their recipe!!! The packaging looks the same, but the nutritional info (salt, fat, etc) is slightly different. The taste is WAAY different. And the ingredients listed are the same as before. I have tried calling the company... -
ARCHIVED Vanilla Frostings That Are gluten-free?
Merika replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just made frosting from scratch for icing gingerbread men and it was soooo easy! Get a box of powdered sugar and follow the directions on the back - it's just a few ingredients, and you just need a spoon to mix it. Soooo easy and sooooo delicious Merika -
ARCHIVED Test Results: Gluten Intolerance Vs. Wheat Allergy
Merika replied to dkaup112500's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, you can be gluten intolerant without having a wheat allergy. An allergy is a different reaction, and the test is for different markers. This means that 1) your dd cannot have any gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats) 2) she does not have a wheat allergy, which would imply a separate set of symptoms 3) she CANNOT eat wheat, because of the gluten intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis Issue
Merika replied to aliciasmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, the doctor sounds typically uninformed. I wouldn't think he would run a gene test. He should be running the TTG test and the "full blood panel for celiac" which is 4-5 tests, including the ttg. Going by "she has the antibodies for celiac" would imply she tested positive for celiac on the ttg test, which means she has celiac, and indeed needs to go... -
ARCHIVED Ugh, Glutened And Sick Sick Sick
Merika replied to anerissara's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
100% totally and completely obsessive about getting rid of gluten! Your health problems will not go away most likely for *months* after being 100% gluten-free. I have been gluten-free for almost 2 years, accidentally glutened 2 weeks ago, and also the first few months after going gluten-free, as I got the hang of it. I was super sick before gluten-free... -
Maybe ask the school nurse if anyone else is celiac? Because with 4000 students, statistically there should be about 35 other celiacs in your school....Mind you, some are probably not diagnosed yet. Maybe you could have the nurse or someone put up a sign for a celiacs group or meeting? Merika

ARCHIVED Safe Ricotta
Merika replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Read the labels and call the company. I haven't run into a ricotta that has gluten, but it doesn't mean one isn't out there..... Merika -
ARCHIVED How Cool Is This?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That is cool! Granted, I live in Los Angeles, city of unusual foods and diets, but at a recent moms meeting we had several new people, about 8-10 moms total plus kids, and at least 3 of the families were wheat free :) And, we just found out the boy down the street is gluten free. :) So now we know where to go if there is an earthquake and all that... -
ARCHIVED Tests Are Back...and I Am Confused..
Merika replied to cherie012's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have read from some people, ones on this board too I think, that in undiagnosed celiac in which steroids are prescribed, symptoms do in fact decrease. It makes sense, because steroids reduce inflammation. However, I would be concerned that if the steroids help, celiac or some other problem may just be masked. It seems better to hunt for the source of the... -
ARCHIVED New Lab Results, Help!
Merika replied to rmhansen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Rebecca, How frustrating! But it's really good they did the tests so you know to keep looking for gluten in her life. It is super important that you get ALL of it away from her. A little bit now and then will not let her body heal and will make her sick. Get rid of the playdough. Don't let the family leave gluten things around the house. Make sure... -
Hi Kailyn, I will wager a bite of bread with you that this is not true The research shows the opposite, and it makes sense. There are sooo many myths about breastfeeding that are such garbage and it really makes me sad when doctors or those supposedly "in the know" spout off things like this. Medical students, except for a few very recently, are given...

ARCHIVED Finally Glutened, Lol! And In My Own Home!
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for everyone's responses. My brain is clearing - I was finally able to pay the bills today, lol. But now the gluten has gone into my spine, if that makes any sense, and my joints. Everything just feels tight and kind of inflamed. Every time dh grabs me for a hug, I'm like NO Stop! LOL. Well, at least I know it will pass. Kasey's mom: So glad...
