ARCHIVED Very Sick Teenager
Merika replied to michelle4boys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Diahrea is not always there. It could swing all the way to constipation. Or bowel movements could be perfectly fine. Mine were always fine and it took me 12 YEARS and an accidental diagnosis to find out about celiac. I wish you and your son luck in feeling better. Merika -
ARCHIVED Boyfriend With Celiac(need Some Input)
Merika replied to spyderbabe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am celiac, my dh is not. We eat gluten free dinner together. He eats gluten cereal for breakfast and gluten lunch (usually separate from me) and gluten snacks. I did at first ask him not to eat muffins/cakes/coffee shop type gluten foods in front of me because i didn't want to think about them. Now he does it out of habit and I find bakery bags in the car... -
ARCHIVED What Are Gluten Free Dog Food And Treats Brands?
Merika posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So we have been talking about getting a dog for a while and today we went looking at adoption places and found one we like and we are going to go back asap tomorrow to try to get the guy we like...whew! I am excited What are some supermarket brands and specialty brands that are gluten-free? Does gluten-free really matter? I've read lots of threads... -
ARCHIVED Milk Question
Merika replied to Smunkeemom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Smunkee, You are not alone....I too wondered about the gluten in cow milk. I hope there isn't any because I eat dairy every day. Richard, I would love to see a study, because a lot of doctors say that gluten can't be passed via breastmilk either (and they are wrong). Let's hope the cows DO have better digestive systems than us people. Merika -
ARCHIVED Sushi At Home
Merika replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ooh, I'm glad you brought this up. I have been avoiding the wasabi, but now maybe I'll check out the Hime stuff. Btw, Hime has THE BEST brown rice ever. I normally don't care for it, but theirs is so darned good. Kaseysmom, I didn't realize you ate soy. Don't know why....Enjoy the tamari for me Merika -
ARCHIVED Chewable Vitamins For Children
Merika replied to mamaathome's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We tried the Freeda orange flavor today and ds hated it. Might be trying the yummy bears next, not sure he'll go for another big round disc shape again (freeda)... Merika -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Paper Towels/plates
Merika replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Whoa....now this I never thought about. Never thought about maxi pads either.....And what about toilet paper rolls? I ask, because I also have a 4 year old who thinks discarded paper rolls are the best thing since sliced rice bread (haha). Merika -
ARCHIVED Will Resticting Gluten From A Non-sensitive Child Make Them Sensitive?
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, There hasn't been any research specifically on this, I don't think. But if someone doesn't have a problem with gluten, whether they eat it or not, and when, shouldn't matter. So if your son doesn't have a gluten problem and he doesn't eat it for a while, it shouldn't matter when he starts. The ONLY blip in this is some evidence that if is INITIALLY... -
I am probably the only living American who thinks Purell is ewwwwww gross Putting an icky gel all over my hands and letting it dry there and then who knows where the "working" residue goes??? My mouth? Hair? Food? ICK! Just give me old fashioned soap and water please! I've never worried about soap while out. I figure as long as I rinse well, it should...

ARCHIVED Hi Looking For Some Input
Merika replied to lovemyboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know about Canada, but gluten-free eating is getting almost common here, lol. Actually, it's not funny, as many of the gluten-free kids are autistic/aspergers, which sucks way more than celiac. If you can manage these sorts of kids, I'm sure you'd have a full day care in no time. I bet word of mouth would be good for otherwise healthy kids, or... -
Thanks Carrie, I hadn't seen the www.sarahealth one before. Bluelotus, my dh is great too. And I know everyone talks about it on the board here - why don't the medical experts (other than celiac.ca which is ahead of its time....) post this sort of stuff that really makes a difference??? My son and I both got glutened a while back from a friendly neighbor...

Hi, So, I am thinking about this from a recent thread in parents of kids with celiac about getting grandparents to wash their hands before feeding or preparing food for a celiac, and also washing their hands after eating their own gluten-filled foods. Obviously, it's a good idea....BUT Does anyone have a link that points to some literature or "official...

ARCHIVED Wedding Planning - Any Suggestions?
Merika replied to teebs in WV's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd suggest sticking with naturally gluten-free foods as much as possible. Find an attentive catering co or restaurant and go over with them really well HOW the food should be prepared, ingredients, everything. I would make the whole wedding gluten-free. I had my wedding pre diagnosis, but me & dh made the whole affair vegetarian. No one even knew... -
ARCHIVED Green&blacks Cocoa Not Gluten Free
Merika replied to gabby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Gabby, Are you looking for gluten-free cocoa or gluten-free cocoa made in a gluten-free facility? It sounds like the green and black is gluten-free. Many of the products we eat are made in a facility that also processes gluten. You'd probably need to go to a place like Enjoy Life online that only manufactures "allergen-free" foods, but I don't think... -
Most of what I've heard is that dieticians know little about celiac and are more prone to give wrong and harmful information than good and helpful info. I know it's a little depressing. There are some blood tests for minerals/vitamins that a doc can run if you're interested. I don't know too much about them. I think the best thing you can do is eat a healthy...

ARCHIVED First Trip To The Dentist
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Call the office ahead of time and ask what they will be using. Ask for phone numbers or manufacturers names (which will be printed on the product and easily given to you). Then call the places and ask about gluten. I've done this for myself and everyone was very helpful. Merika -
ARCHIVED Ever Had A Baby That Couldn't Tolerate
Merika replied to KayJay's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
((((hugs)))) good luck Kay. Let us know how it goes! Merika -
All I can say is I went to Italy for a month (Florence too ) and got sicker and sicker and sicker. Mind you, this was prediagnosis and we ate pastries for breakfast, pizza for lunch and pasta for supper No wonder I could barely leave the flat by the end of it! There is an incredible fresh foods market in Florence where you can buy all sorts of yummy...

ARCHIVED Ever Had A Baby That Couldn't Tolerate
Merika replied to KayJay's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, From what you say about you and your dh's allergies and your baby's reactions to formula, it sounds like she may be reacting to milk and soy. In which case you definitely do not want to go to formula. Find a good lactation consultant or a La Leche League leader. Your milk supply will not drop unless your baby nurses less. As someone already mentioned... -
ARCHIVED Nursing Infant Gluten Free
Merika replied to DianeByrd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Elfkin, that is such a sweet story Merika -
Hi, I haven't had the test. No broken bones either though (ever, knock wood). You can build bone until you are about age 30. The best way to do this is through weight-bearing exercise. It's better than fossamax or any drug. Going out in the sun is good too (without tons of sunscreen all the time), as vitamin D is necessary for healthy bones. i hate...

ARCHIVED Nursing Infant Gluten Free
Merika replied to DianeByrd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow, elfkin, what an amazing story. Breastmilk really is a beautiful food. I've come across a lot of stories in which a child who nurses exclusively past one year and well beyond is often the child with food allergies. They seem to know what is best for them! My ds nursed exclusively til 11 mos, and nightnursed every 2 hours or so until around age 2... -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten To Consume Beffore Testing
Merika replied to TestyTommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've heard some people make antibodies in 3 months, but *everyone* makes them in 6 months, so unless you start feeling really cr&ppy before 6 months, I'd go with that. If you've been eating gluten up til now, though, don't sweat it, just take the test. Merika -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Grandparents
Merika replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How infuriating My own favorite analogy (though i like Katie's thing too!) is arsenic. It's just a little arsenic, right? Just go ahead and eat it................ Merika -
ARCHIVED Nursing Infant Gluten Free
Merika replied to DianeByrd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Trying to answer your questions in order: 1- Proteins (such as gluten) can be in breastmilk REGARDLESS of leaky gut. It happens with perfectly healthy women as well. 2- Preliminary studies have shown that breastfeeding during the time of introducing gluten does lower the odds of celiac. It is in no way a guarantee, and has a small effect, not huge...
