  1. Hi Sally, There is no such thing as "too long" You did her immune system a great service when you nursed to 20 months. The "school of thought" these days is still as it was then - introduce solids at 6 months or later. I too have heard both parents must carry the gene. I've only heard that here on this board though. Can someone point me to another...
  2. Thank you Kaiti, I hadn't heard of such a thing either. But then I'm not super up-to-date on things in the past year re celiac tests. But I know you are Merika
  3. Hi Carrie, Glad you are seeing some improvement Definitely change the hair products, like you said, and check again every label you eat. Are you using the microwave/toaster at work? That could contaminate you. Overall, though, things sound ok. I have been gluten-free almost 2 years and am still not "normal". Mind you, my poops were never classic...
  4. Recent research has shown that nursing does decrease the odds of getting celiac. It does NOT prevent celiac. Nursing decreases the odds of many many diseases, yet people still get them, even those who've been breastfed. Also, the research points more specifically towards *extended breastfeeding* as being more helpful - ie at least 6 mos exclusively nursing...
  5. Hi, So I haven't been on the boards as much recently. Have been busy out living life and actually feeling somewhat better :) Here is my story.... We had neighbors over for tea last weekend. After some discussion with dh, we agree on a gluten-free tea (duh...but whatever) and snacks. Of course our neighbors, who we really like but don't know very...
  6. So I've been told by someone I know that her BIL was just tested for celiac, and the doc said it didn't matter that he wasn't currently eating wheat - that there is a new test. It's the first I've heard of it, and she isn't in the celiac community. Is this doc blowing smoke up his ***, or is there really a new test? Merika
  7. Hi, So these are apparently "hypoallergenic" vitamins, and they have a kids one I'm looking at (2 actually). I was wondering if anyone here had experience with them? Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Thanks, Merika (normally vitamin-averse)
  8. Thank you Jersey! I cannot eat them either - or any of Pamela's cookies. The baking mix is the only product of Pamela's I do ok on. Why is that?????? The cookies should be ok - the ones I try are even egg free and soy free. I eat dairy, so that's not the problem. My ds, who's allergic to soy, just ate through a box of Pamela's cookies (a new kind my...
  9. Hi, Just one more "yeah, you'll be fine" Relaaaaaaax My preg was fine - two years before celiac diagnosis. Hope you are feeling better soon, or maybe it was a false alarm, Merika
  10. Hi Maureen, This diet has to be 100% for it to work. Pizza and barley grass juice will not cut it. Sorry, probably not what you want to hear. While she is in for vitamin tests, why not have her tested for celiac as well? Some people who test negative for it do have their health improve while gluten free. For those of us who do test positive, it is absolutely...
  11. While you are preg, as you do while not preg, continue eating gluten-free. Breastfeed your baby. You will never have to worry about if this formula or that is gluten-free. Breastfeeding is also the only known variable that will *decrease* the chances of your child having celiac. It is pretty easy to control a baby/young child's diet. My ds eats gluten...
  12. Flavored coffee can contain gluten. Vydor had a great post on that a while back, with links. As for unflavored coffee - well, if the basket has been put down on a counter that bread crumbs (buns, muffins....) are on, and some stuck to the bottom and then coffee was brewed through it, you could definitely be sick from that. At coffee shops, I've been...
  13. Hi, I just wanted to let all the parents here know that there is an article in December's Vogue magazine by a woman whose daughter has severe peanut allergy. Most of us here don't have that exact problem, but it was nice seeing a serious food problem addressed in such a mainstream magazine. There are many "recognizable" stories in it, such as the doctor...
  14. Hello I'm in LA. We had a meeting a few months ago. The first and only one so far, I think, lol - all of us from this site, so it was fun There is celiac.org which is HQ in the Valley, and has periodic events (educational, eating, etc) and they have little offshoot regional groups in LA, so you may want to hook up with them. PM me with your...
  15. Hi Ursula, Sorry, haven't been online in a while, and I goofed a bit on the name of the book. Here it is at Amazon: Open Original Shared Link Hth, Merika
  16. Ursula, There is a book called "Personal Stories On...Celiac" that you may find insightful, and your gd's might read. It's a book with 3-5 page stories of people getting diagnosed/living with celiac. There is a whole chapter on teenagers, written by teenagers. My take on the book was that this age group had the hardest time adjusting and adapting to celiac...
  17. I think I saw posted on this site that 40% of celiacs are overweight. This is in big opposition to the perception that celiacs are all underweight. There are several guys on this board who write in frequently who LOST extra weight after going gluten-free. Also, many of us here were diagnosed as teenagers or adults, so clearly we made it through childhood...
  18. Hi, It's really common for kids with food allergies to not want to eat table food. My ds didn't start eating table food until 11 mos, and really didn't start eating in earnest until age 2. He is highly allergic to soy and also gluten-free. But we didn't know any of this until he was 2, and ate soy (and wheat) everyday. If I accidentally ate soy, he would...
  19. My grandmother had (and died of) those same blockages you talk of, at least I'm pretty sure that's the kind of blockage it was. She was undiagnosed celiac. She didn't have cancer though. I think there is so much they don't know about celiac, and I think we'll all be learning a lot more about it in the next 50 years, now that actual research money and ...
  20. Yeah, so I've made several things out of the cook book and they have all been DELICIOUS And, I did NOT have any er rapid digestion (LOL, great term), but possibly because I ate it as part of a meal or a snack. The cookbook is not 100% gluten-free (like the restaurant) but it's mostly gluten-free. Yea, gluten-free! Merika
  21. In the past (when I did salon coloring) I just let them use whatever for color, shampoo and conditioner. It all washes out and it's someone else's hands in the whole mess, and all. As for products they use *afterwards* I either read the ingredients before they put it in, like gel, oil, (preferred) - or i just try to be careful about not sticking my hands...
  22. I'd be worried about my kid dropping weight too. On the other hand, I dropped weight after going gluten-free and it was a good 18 mos before any of it came back. Mind you, I'm 33, not 7. I imagine a 7 year old gets better much faster. i also found additional foods I was allergic to and eliminating those has helped. Merika
  23. dperk, How have you been able to consume a lot of meat after being veggie for so long? I eat tiny bites and feel sick and get constipated from the whole thing. Literally, ONE BITE changes my whole digestion. Is there a secret I'm missing? Merika 13 yrs veggie
  24. Stephanie, Are they recommending the infant vitamins for you or your dd? I'm confused. Iron supplements, IMO are a bad idea for a child. If they are worried about her iron levels, they should check hers, not make assumptions based on you. Generally, an exclusively breastfed child will get all she needs from you. She will draw your iron reserves down to nothing...
  25. I had them done too. I haven't eliminated all my high foods because i tested allergic to everything I eat almost. here is some more info, which might also help deb. The results for wheat/gluten have nothing to do with celiac. Celiac is not an *allergy*, so you can test fine for it on the york test, yet still have celiac. That George tested high for it...
