ARCHIVED Danimals Dinkable Yogurt Gluten Testing
Merika replied to lisabp's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Well, Lisa's probably gone. Though if you're reading, I understand what it is like to be scared as a parent, and celiac is scary stuff, especially since your 19 mos old isn't really old enough to communicate about how *exactly* he's feeling. It does get easier, really. The deal with Dannon, which is why I'm really posting here, according to the person... -
ARCHIVED The Dreaded "travel With Catered Food"
Merika replied to tarnalberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ooooh, I've been thinking about food dehydrators Which model do you have/recommend? I planted a fig tree last year just because I couldn't find a decent dried white fig anywhere! (other than the moroccan place I *used to* dance at....) TIA, Merika BTW, Tarnalberry, where in SoCal are you? I'm in Hollywood. -
Hi, Just hopping in to say you're not the only one i am celiac, my ds (age 3) eats gluten-free AND he's allergic to soy. Ridiculously allergic, none of the lecithin, vitamin E, etc. Soy is I think more pervasive than wheat in our country But we do it, everyday, follow the diet. Oh, and we're vegetarian (rolleyes...) well, no specific places. There are of course chains like PF Changs around. I live in LA, and while I don't eat out currently (diet more restricted than gluten-free), eating gluten-free is definitely possible at many places. LA is king of funky diets, Atkins, Zone, you name it, so people ordering a sandwich with no bread is commonplace (just be superclear...

ARCHIVED Last Minute Travel W/ Lots Of Unknowns?
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Eloisa, Thanks for the great link! Everyone here's been sooo supportive. Unfortunately, I won't have time to get to a health food store. I don't know San Fran well at all (have spent more time in Oakland/Berkeley) and will compare the places listed on the site with a map. I wish I were just gluten-free. I also don't eat meat, and can't eat soy... -

ARCHIVED Last Minute Travel W/ Lots Of Unknowns?
Merika posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi, So my dh is going to San Fran for a film fest in which he stars in one of the films! He's asked if I want to go with....theoretically, of course I do!!! Plane reservations have to be made pronto, it's just a week away. He has no place to stay - might stay last minute with other people from the film, might stay in a hotel (last minute in SF?... -
ARCHIVED New Here With Questions
Merika replied to oliviasmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Olivia, FTT is not a requirement of celiac. Look at all of us adults here recently diagnosed, lol! I just wish the docs knew better (sigh).... Merika -
wow, it's great they found the cause of your trouble. My grandmother was tested again and again for MS, but the docs never found the celiac. My mother and I were diagnosed several years after her death. 9 weeks is just too short to see anything, IMO! I've been gluten-free for over a year now and still have mental and physical symptoms. I am much better...

ARCHIVED Kid #2... Should Non-cd Mom Be Gf Durring Pg?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hmmm, I've been wondering along similar lines lately. I am celiac, ds (age 3) is untested but has been gluten-free for 2 yrs (long story), and dh is not celiac. I have been pondering raising all future children gluten-free til age 3 at least because 1-in case they have celiac, but also 2- little kids and food are messy messy messy and I feel better not having... -
If you are not much for cooking, but find yourself in need of doing so, as I think most folks with celiac do, a site that is a MUST SEE is www.savingdinner.com . I am a happy celiac subscriber to the vegetarian menu option. You get 6 dinners per week, and from that most can be converted easily to gluten-free. I have numerous dietary restrictions at the moment...

ARCHIVED Question About Timming?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Vincent, With time, you will find his pattern to gluten ingestion. It took us a good solid year of attention and looking to find most of the quirks and timing of my ds's soy allergy. We felt we had it down pretty much by age 3. Keep in mind, we were paying attention for a year previous, and had him off soy for another previous 6 months, and knew something... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Accident
Merika replied to kaylee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Kaylee, I have a 3 yr old on the gluten-free diet. I have never had to tell him "no birthday cake for you" You can make gluten-free cakes, gluten-free rice crispie treats, tapioca with wild food dye colors, gluten-free brownies, gluten-free frosting, you get the idea. I tell my ds that some cakes have gluten and some don't. He always asks when... -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Possible Cd? Help?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Vincent, If your doctor did the full celiac blood panel (about 5 things, ttg, iga...) you can go gluten-free if you want. If you intend to have the biopsy if it comes back positive, wait for that test before you go gluten-free. Many people choose not to do the biopsy, as the blood tests today are so accurate it's really not necessary. As far as waiting... -

ARCHIVED Reactions Please Help!
Merika replied to mamaathome's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What I've heard from Dr. Pietzak (celiac specialist) is you need to be eating about a slice of bread a day (or its equivalent) for 6 months to be blood tested. My mom had been mostly gluten-free for 3 months before her test, and while she didn't test positive on one of the results (because of the diet) another of the results showed a gluten reaction enough... -
ARCHIVED Could My Daughter Have Cd?
Merika replied to lynda-29's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yeah, there are several different blood tests, and the docs need to run the whole celiac "panel" not just the 1 or 2 tests that are cheaper and they're usually tempted to do. Also, I've heard that blood tests on very young kids are not always accurate. Anybody here know more about this? And Monica, hey if the diet works then it's definitely worth it... -
KatieUSA, what is your homeopathic spray? Bonnie, if you don't want to be "goofed" (not sure what the meds are) try just some gluten-free peppermint candies, or the teas that katie mentioned. They work too! Also, if you are newly gluten-free, it's so easy to goof and ingest gluten. And I'm looking at the post date of your message and it's Sunday night...

ARCHIVED Going To Cancel My Endoscopy
Merika replied to Sheely's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Well, my blood tests were clearly positive for celiac, so I saw no need to do the endoscopy, and for further confirmation, I felt *much* better on a gluten-free diet. In case you haven't come across this yet, your endometriosis and hysterectomy are most likely tied to/caused by your celiac. I don't have personal experience with this, but i would... -
ARCHIVED G Tube For Celiacs Kids
Merika replied to angigz32's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your doc said the gene test was the final say? Nope, no way, sorry gotta disagree, no no no no no! The gene test is interesting and *can be* indicative of whether or not someone *might* get celiac in their lifetime, but it *does not* say whether someone *has* celiac. The full blood panel test is THE test, somewhat debated by the endoscopy. Merika -
ARCHIVED It's Happening Again.....
Merika replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
According to my acupuncturist, the jaw thing is related to the system that is affected by celiac. Sorry to be vague, but I just don't remember at the moment what she said exactly. I have the jaw thing too. The fun just never ends Merika -
ARCHIVED Pamela's Cookies Are Gf But..........
Merika replied to mela14's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had problems with Pamela's cookies in the past. Not huge, and eventually stopped eating them. I think part of it is the fat content in any cookie. As a new celiac, I found fat was extremely difficult to digest. As time's gone on (now 1 1/2 yrs), fat doesn't do me in like it used to. I'm also taking a digestive enzyme which helps tremendously. And I got... -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Possible Cd? Help?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good for you! Let us know how it goes. Btw, i am so impressed that you found this board so soon and are pursuing the diet so well for your ds, and open to looking at yourself and other family members. I have celiac, as does my mother, as did her mother (we're 99.9% sure, but no tests were ever run on her). My own son, age 3, has been gluten-free since... -
Interesting. I just asked my midwife about this (for theoretical baby #2) and she said no problem. If you are gluten-free and following your diet I can't imagine why you'd need the headache of extra visits. My guess is she doesn't know much about celiac and pregnancy (recent research showed it had very little effect) and is covering her butt (for insurance...
