ARCHIVED Mucous - When Does It End?
Merika replied to GFManiac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
From studying in another field, I have learned that when the body is experiencing allergies (food, pollen, anything) that the mucous membranes overproduce. Sounds obvious - snot runs if you get an allergic-causing item near your nose - but there are other mucous-related parts of your body besides your nose (such as breastmilk being produced by one of these... -
ARCHIVED Food Allergies Impeding Intestinal Healing?
Merika replied to Emme999's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Michelle, I have been wondering the same thing! If you find out, let me know please I tested allergic to nearly every food I eat. I've eliminated some and restricted others, and ignored the rest. I figure, I gotta eat something, right? Even if it might slow healing, I need the nutrients in the food, and my tummy will just have to be somewhat... -
ARCHIVED Could My Daughter Have Cd?
Merika replied to lynda-29's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's true you can figure out what she should eat via an elimination diet. BUT personally, I would want to know if I had a wheat allergy (unpleasant but nothing more) or celiac, and possible larger health ramifications down the road caused by non-strict dietary compliance (think teenager....) or accidental long-term ingestion or....and I would NOT want to... -
ARCHIVED Reactions Please Help!
Merika replied to mamaathome's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is sooo easy to miss stuff, you will find more and more things in your food and environment as you go. I don't mean that to be discouraging - it's just the reality of having celiac (I've screwed up my own and ds's diet more than a few times and I am *fanatical* about reading labels, calling, etc.) The general consensus (and my own family's experience... -
ARCHIVED G Tube For Celiacs Kids
Merika replied to angigz32's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It seems that if his blood test is positive for celiac, then he has celiac. Right???? The gene test is nice, and somewhat experimental, and IMO irrelevant if the blood test is positive. Breastfeeding is wonderful and it's fantastic that you did as long as you did. I'm sure that helped him - it is very easy to digest and soothing to the stomach. Also, though... -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Possible Cd? Help?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Kudos to you for figuring it out That is a HUGE step forward, and I'm really happy to hear your ds is doing so much better As for yourself, if you think you have it, do the blood test now while you have gluten in your system or you may find yourself wondering later....Or, you may find yourself needing an "official" diagnosis for some purpose... -
ARCHIVED Virus Wont Go Away
Merika replied to kirst4588's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Kirst, Well, I'm not sure about specific info, it's definitely worth checking out more....But I can tell you that it takes me a loooong time to recover from standard food poisoning or the stomach flu. My gut is still healing (1 1/2 yrs gluten-free). If your son has been gluten-free for a whole year, I would think at his age that he would be back to... -
ARCHIVED Infants W/ Cd
Merika replied to khoots's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry, have to disagree, whatever you do *don't* switch to formula! You will complicate diagnosis and deny your baby all the necessary nutrients, immunities, and other benefits of breastfeeding. AND your baby might be allergic to formula!!! It sounds like something is going on, and you're on the right track. It could be celiac, or it could be a food... -
ARCHIVED Tantrums?
Merika replied to debbie-doodles's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My ds gets all out of whack when he gets into soy. Even the tiniest amounts. It takes about 24 hours for symptoms to start, and usually takes me well into the next 24 hours to figure out what's going on. Now that I've been aware of it for almost 2 years, I can see a clear and distinct pattern to the soy working its way through him and know what to expect... -
ARCHIVED Am I Alone In Feeling This Way?
Merika replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our grocery bill was outrageous the first 6-8 months after diagnosis. I spent forever at the store each week scouting for gluten-free items, and tried just about all of them, lol, eventually. I gave myself a sort of freedom with it for trying out new things each week to find ones that I like. Even items I would never normally get, I tried, just to know it... -
ARCHIVED Book On Gulten
Merika replied to 11111's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I liked the "personal stories on celiac". Not very medical. Lots of short anecdotal stories from celiacs of all ages. My dh found it very helpful to understand celiac, though he already understood the technical side of it. (i'm the one with it.) Merika -
ARCHIVED New To This Forum, Gf Since 3/04
Merika replied to keenpetite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi and welcome, Everyone's reaction to non gluten-free foods is different, and pain in 15 minutes seems like it could indeed be possible. Merika -
ARCHIVED Preschool Art Supplies
Merika replied to lbsteenwyk's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yep to all the above, and I've just recently run into a very "natural" watercolor set made in Germany with natural ingredients, and you guessed it, wheat is one of those ingredients.......(sigh) Merika -
ARCHIVED Constant Diarrhea
Merika replied to Twister2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Monica, Do the tests. I think all of us adults here with celiac will tell you - do the tests!!! It took me 12 years of awful symptoms to get diagnosed, during which time LOTS of damage occurred and now I am allergic (hopefully temporarily) to many many things. On another note, many doctors are not aware that you can relactate (at any time, but... -
ARCHIVED My Mom Needs Help Fast!
Merika replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Sheila, Good for you for being strong for your mother while she cannot do so herself! I think what she is experiencing is common among celiacs, but as you say there's a point where losing weight can be dangerous. I have been gluten-free for one year and am 5'7" and 110 lbs. I am trying to gain weight. Being gluten-free and celiac all of a sudden... -
ARCHIVED Afraid I Won't Be A Mommy
Merika replied to gabrielle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, I think it's very individual. I got pregnant immediately after we started trying, and had a good pregnancy and delivery. This was pre-gluten-free for me, after major symptoms for about 10 year. As for miscarriages, it simple to say, but don't fear them. Statistically, (celiac or not) about 50% of all pregnancies end early, many of them women don... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Harvest
Merika replied to scaredparent's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh my goodness! I would be paranoid with a grain mill nearly next door, but maybe that is just me. Practically speaking, you will probably just have to wait and see over the next 2 years or so and see what happens. I say 2, because this close to diagnosis he may still be recovering and not notice the subtleties. As a paranoid (lol) adult, I'd probably... -
ARCHIVED Question About Nephew
Merika replied to mollyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Being vegetarian and celiac are two very different things, and I don't believe one really impacts the other. Whether or not to be veggie is entirely its own issue. That said, your nephews small size IS the result of celiac and in a year or so, he'll probably look just like other kids his size, but give it some time. You don't mention if the mother... -
ARCHIVED Baby's Weight
Merika replied to SharonF's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Check out www.kellymom.com for a height/weight chart for *breastfed* kids. The chart at your doc's office is for formula fed kids. It is common for breastfed babies to start and the high end of the chart and drop towards the bottom near one year. Ignoring the charts, how does your dd seem *to you*? That is the best guide, IMO. If you are concerned about... -
You mentioned trail mix. Did you call the company and really quiz them? I've found that things like dried fruits can be dusted with flour. Personally I've run into rice flour (fine) and oat flour (not fine). I presume someone out there may use wheat flour. They dust things to keep them from sticking together in the packaging. So, the company who makes...

ARCHIVED Sick Since Going Gf
Merika replied to bklyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I think this is really common. I've heard it a lot here, and it's been my own experience as well. Here's my own unscientific theory. The body is poisoned for years with gluten. Obvious symptoms may or may not be present. Personally, I had just a few symptoms myself, and none would have pointed a doctor towards celiac. When I went gluten-free, I... -
ARCHIVED Quite Disheartening....
Merika replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Wow, that must be really frustrating (((hugs))) If it's not gluten directly in your diet (and believe me, I've missed sources too, or had a product change ingredients...), I think the kids may be a likely culprit. I can't imagine having four non-gluten-free kids running around the house!!! My one gluten-free kid - age 3 - is unknown celiac. We... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
Merika replied to emma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
great advice from everyone, but 2 things leap to mind... 1- aloe juice can cause diahrea if you're not constipated 2- there are some prolific, very knowledgable and eloquent folks on this board (Kaiti are you one? )who also happen to be teenagers, and when they mention "time to heal" from gluten, it often sounds very quick to me. Teenagers (and even... -
ARCHIVED Underweight Infant
Merika replied to decathmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I strongly recommend checking out www.kellymom.com and www.lalecheleague.org for accurate information. My experience being with LLL for the last few years is that doctors often don't know what they're talking about when it comes to infant growth rates and breastfeeding. It sounds like your dd is healthy and growing, and without his comments you think... -
From reading I've done (mostly online), the psychological symptoms of celiac are very real yet not known much about (do they stay or go post-gluten-free, etc). I suffer from agoraphobia (oddly, diagnosed by a career counselor who was initially trained as a psychologist), which showed up as anxiety soon after physical symptoms of celiac began (like within...
