Most dishes and cutlery will be safe after being run through a dishwasher, especially if ones that have gluten residue are rinsed prior to loading. If your cutting board is wood, don't share it. Same goes for wooden spoons (or anything else made of wood--it is porous). Wire mesh strainers can trap gluten...
  3. False negatives are not uncommon, and testing in young children is notoriously unreliable.
  4. Welcome to the board from a fellow Canadian. Yes, in many cases the symptomatic relief is very quick, and permanent. In my own case, although I felt improvement immediately, it took some time for my symptoms to go away. I had severe atrophy of my villi, and they don't regenerate overnight.
  5. Hershey at one point had a policy to clearly label gluten ingredients, but in the last few years they have given evasive answers to customer requests. Read the ingredients carefully, and avoid anything with questionable status. In the US, wheat can not be hidden, but barley can.
  6. You must use the reference range that the lab uses for their test. It is based on the results pattern at that lab. Variances exist from lab to lab.
  7. Was a total serum IgA done? That test verifies that your immune system is functioning and producing antibodies. If it shows a level below the reference range, then the other test results will not be valid. Yes, go see the gastro. Even if your blood tests are negative, an endoscopy my reveal damage to the villi which is diagnostic of celiac disease.
  8. I was thinking of Vancouver, BC, where they have what they call "liquid sunshine" on the majority of days outside of summer. This is from being right on the coast. Your Vancouver is a ways inland. Today is bright and sunny.
  9. The Canadian Celiac Association list tocopherols as a safe food ingredient, without qualification. Some things are so highly processed that even if they start with wheat, there is no gliadin left in the final product. I don't worry about tocopherol.
  10. I had extreme villous atrophy when I was diagnosed at 46, ten years ago. The GI doctor said my intestinal lining was smooth. He did not cite a Marsh value, but from what I now know, it was Marsh 4. My recovery took time, and it was several months before I felt "normal" again.   16. Genuine wood smoke is gluten-free, but if there are other ingredients it is conceivable that they contain gluten. I would not expect it, though.
  17. There are two places for an image in your profile. Your picture is visible when somebody displays your profile. What appears under your name in posts (to logged-on members) is your avatar. The upload process is very similar to that for a personal photo.
  18. Hmm. My tech support background crept into my earlier post. Most of you figured it out. ID10T is pronounced eye-dee-ten-tee and is help-desk slang. "It was an eye-dee-ten-tee error" means, well, you can understand without me drawing a picture. Pizza was excellent.

  21. I am not aware of any brand of root beer that contains gluten. There are other things in sodas that can cause a reaction in some people.
  22. The definition of "Gluten-Free" remains unregulated in the US. In most other jurisdictions, it refers only to ingredients intentionally included, but does not say anything about shared facilities or equipment. Disclosure of cross-contamination risk is voluntary. If you see it, fine, but just because you don't see it that doesn't mean that the facility is...
  23. I'm not sure where you are, but here in the Toronto area it is sold in some regular grocery stores.
