ARCHIVED Brand New Member From Canada
psawyer replied to Wing's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You can have both of those. Gluten-free pizza is available at some outlets, and there is gluten-free beer as well. It is late. I will post details tomorrow. -
ARCHIVED Pots, Pans, Dishes, Food Storage
psawyer replied to sunnyday13's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board! A dedicated toaster for sure. Most dishes and cutlery will be safe after being run through a dishwasher, especially if ones that have gluten residue are rinsed prior to loading. If your cutting board is wood, don't share it. Same goes for wooden spoons (or anything else made of wood--it is porous). Wire mesh strainers can trap gluten... -
ARCHIVED 4 Year Old With Negative Blood Tests
psawyer replied to brigitam's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
False negatives are not uncommon, and testing in young children is notoriously unreliable. -
ARCHIVED Brand New Member From Canada
psawyer replied to Wing's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome to the board from a fellow Canadian. Yes, in many cases the symptomatic relief is very quick, and permanent. In my own case, although I felt improvement immediately, it took some time for my symptoms to go away. I had severe atrophy of my villi, and they don't regenerate overnight. -
ARCHIVED Sorry To Be A Pain...trying To Get Organized
psawyer replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hershey at one point had a policy to clearly label gluten ingredients, but in the last few years they have given evasive answers to customer requests. Read the ingredients carefully, and avoid anything with questionable status. In the US, wheat can not be hidden, but barley can. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results - Help!
psawyer replied to jstanton8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You must use the reference range that the lab uses for their test. It is based on the results pattern at that lab. Variances exist from lab to lab. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results - Help!
psawyer replied to jstanton8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Was a total serum IgA done? That test verifies that your immune system is functioning and producing antibodies. If it shows a level below the reference range, then the other test results will not be valid. Yes, go see the gastro. Even if your blood tests are negative, an endoscopy my reveal damage to the villi which is diagnostic of celiac disease. -

I was thinking of Vancouver, BC, where they have what they call "liquid sunshine" on the majority of days outside of summer. This is from being right on the coast. Your Vancouver is a ways inland. Today is bright and sunny. -
ARCHIVED Tocopherol - Burts Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm
psawyer replied to alissar's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The Canadian Celiac Association list tocopherols as a safe food ingredient, without qualification. Some things are so highly processed that even if they start with wheat, there is no gliadin left in the final product. I don't worry about tocopherol. -
ARCHIVED Villi Absent
psawyer replied to bincongo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had extreme villous atrophy when I was diagnosed at 46, ten years ago. The GI doctor said my intestinal lining was smooth. He did not cite a Marsh value, but from what I now know, it was Marsh 4. My recovery took time, and it was several months before I felt "normal" again. A follow-up endoscopy five years later found complete recovery. Biopsies taken... -

Sometimes I see phunny, incomplete "new content" displays. Try going to the main page and just above the active members list, click on "Today's active content." That will give all topics updated within the past 24 hours. -

It was a rainy day in Toronto. A very rainy day, with an inch expected over 24 hours. If I wanted weather like this I'd have moved to Vancouver. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is So Humiliating Sometimes
psawyer replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think that it is fair make assumptions. All the clubs I have been to serve nonalcoholic beverages as well as alcoholic ones. -
Welcome to our community. Try these links for useful information: Unsafe ingredients. Safe ingredients. Open Original Shared Link If you don't see "wheat, rye, barley, malt, or oats" on the labels, its not there, or hidden in "flavors, starches, etc." I am not a supporter of lists--they are out of date the minute that you print them. Formulas...

ARCHIVED Smoked Fish
psawyer replied to sueter's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Genuine wood smoke is gluten-free, but if there are other ingredients it is conceivable that they contain gluten. I would not expect it, though. -
There are two places for an image in your profile. Your picture is visible when somebody displays your profile. What appears under your name in posts (to logged-on members) is your avatar. The upload process is very similar to that for a personal photo.

Hmm. My tech support background crept into my earlier post. Most of you figured it out. ID10T is pronounced eye-dee-ten-tee and is help-desk slang. "It was an eye-dee-ten-tee error" means, well, you can understand without me drawing a picture. Pizza was excellent. -

I am SO not touching the wee melons. Today did not start well. We usually take Tuesdays off, and have a chance to sleep later, and have a lazy start to the day. It started off as usual, but at 9:30 the phone rings. Associate is hearing beeping noises and Jacquie thinks it is the UPS with a power problem. I talk to Cheryl, and try to diagnose power... -

"Toot sweet" is derived from "tout de suite," a French phrase which tranlates literally as "with all speed." -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Root Beer?
psawyer replied to Adare's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am not aware of any brand of root beer that contains gluten. There are other things in sodas that can cause a reaction in some people. -
ARCHIVED Beanitos
psawyer replied to flartista's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The definition of "Gluten-Free" remains unregulated in the US. In most other jurisdictions, it refers only to ingredients intentionally included, but does not say anything about shared facilities or equipment. Disclosure of cross-contamination risk is voluntary. If you see it, fine, but just because you don't see it that doesn't mean that the facility is... -

I'm not sure where you are, but here in the Toronto area it is sold in some regular grocery stores.
