psawyer replied to Lynayah's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Providing contact information, including telephone numbers, is permissible, provided the self-promotion rule is not violated. -
The dipping sauce is gluten-free. The gravy is not. Perhaps somebody got them mixed up.

ARCHIVED Blue Diamond Natural Almond Nut Thins- Gluten Free Or Not?
psawyer replied to BrooklynFamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Okay, hold on, don't get too hung up on 20ppm. They didn't say the product contains any gluten at all, much less that it was 20ppm gluten. What they said is that they are aware that cross-contamination is possible, so they test. The test, like all tests, has a sensitivity limit. The one they use is sensitive to 20ppm. (The best test available is sensitive... -
ARCHIVED Question About Product Labeling...
psawyer replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the US, the top eight allergens must be clearly disclosed. They can be in the ingredients list, or in a "Contains" statement following the list. Either one meets the legal requirement, but many companies do both. The eight allergens under the federal Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) are: wheat, soy, milk, peanuts, eggs, tree... -

ARCHIVED Clan Thompson?
psawyer replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have mixed feelings on this. On the positive side, lists like these can help newbies find foods that are safe, BUT, lists are fixed in time and product ingredients change all the time. I like companies such as Kraft, Con Agra and Unilever who will always clearly disclose gluten in their ingredient list. I just have to read the label and I know. -
ARCHIVED Label Question
psawyer replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Of that long list of ingredients with hard-to-pronounce names, there are very few which contain gluten. Organic foods will have shorter ingredient lists, and higher prices, but are not necessarily less likely to contain gluten. Wheat and barley are grown organically, just like other crops. -
ARCHIVED Help With Some Symptoms
psawyer replied to aeryn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have type 1 (autoimmune) diabetes, and have been insulin dependent for a quarter century. I was never comfortable with needles prior to my diagnosis, and I still don't want to look when the phlebotomist takes samples for lab work. But the needles I control and administer myself are a non-issue for me. Undiagnosed (and thus untreated) diabetes is very... -

Yeah, but many of our customers own cottages well north of Toronto. They go there for the summer and take their pets with them. We get a spike just after LaboUr day when they come back to the city and realize that they left the leash, ball, toy, food, or whatever behind. -

I was out there, but I came back inside when the mosquitoes took over the deck. This is our slowest time of the year. I drag my butt into the store, hoping that some customers will show up. Most of our regulars are away at the moment. But 49 people did buy stuff today. Yawn. Actually, only 48, since one person bought an extra item after the original sale... -
ARCHIVED Silly Question?
psawyer replied to VitaminDGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While celiac disease is most common in persons of European descent, it is possible for anyone to have it. A formal diagnosis may be useful when dealing with schools who are reluctant to make accommodations. In the US, a diagnosis allows you to force reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. -
ARCHIVED Corn Oil
psawyer replied to doreen32's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe that you have incorrect information about the nutrients in corn. While not an abundant source, maize (corn) contains some vitamin E in the form of tocopherol. -
ARCHIVED Silly Question?
psawyer replied to VitaminDGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Am allergy to wheat, and an intolerance to gluten, are two independent conditions. You can have both, either one by itself, or neither. Most of us here do not, in fact, have an allergy to wheat. You should have your daughter tested for celiac. But, be aware that testing in young children is not as accurate as in teenagers and adults. -
ARCHIVED "But You Can Eat Whole Wheat, Right?"
psawyer replied to earthtoneNJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Spelt contains gluten. It is not identical to modern wheat, but neither is barley or rye. Celiacs must avoid all forms of gluten, including spelt. -

Once of the functions of the villi is to produce lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose. If this is the cause of lactose intolerance, then it will likely be resolved once the villi are healed.

ARCHIVED I Think I Might Have Been Glutened For The First Time
psawyer replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know anything about the product in question, but reaction times vary widely. Some of us react immediately, but delayed reactions are common. I take 12 to 24 hours to respond to gluten and then have about a week of visible symptoms. -

ARCHIVED Eating Disorder Brought On By Gluten Intolerance?
psawyer replied to kdonov2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Disclaimer: I have not read the article. Celiac Disease is a life-long condition. It can not be outgrown and does not go away. Symptoms can go into remission, but damage to the body still occurs when gluten is ingested. Celiac can cause may symptoms, Bulimia may be a respose to the gastric discomfort that results from eating gluten. It upsets your tummy... -
