ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm here, whatever that means. No rain expected today, low humidity, mid-twenties Celsius. I'm stuck in the store until sometime after seven this evening. -

I sent you a PM explaining what this is about. Please don't take it as being about you because it is not. My email address is in the PM. Send me a note if you want to know more. The substitution is automated and applies to every member, including the moderators. -
ARCHIVED Glutino Pretzels
psawyer replied to docb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glutino are fastidious about making sure that all of their products are gluten free. The production facilities are dedicated to making only gluten-free products. I have met the owner, and he is really committed to serving those needing a completely gluten-free diet. If you want Steven's contact info, send me a PM and I will share it. As mentioned, it could... -
ARCHIVED Smucker's Simply Fruit Blueberry
psawyer replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Smucker will clearly disclose any gluten in the ingredient list. If the list does not mention wheat, rye, barley or oats (by those names) then they are not present. -
ARCHIVED On The Border Tortilla Chips
psawyer replied to Katsby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten, in the literal sense, means the protein of a grain. Corn gluten is the protein of the corn plant. It is not "gluten" as we use the word. This has caused confusion before, and I am sure it will continue to cause confusion as we go forward. Be happy and enjoy the tortilla chips! -
ARCHIVED Hardbite Potato Chips gluten-free?
psawyer replied to gabby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Or maybe because the term "gluten-free" was not regulated in the past. The FDA will soon introduce regulations for this term. The rules may be restrictive, and may not allow the term "gluten free" on things that, in fact, are gluten free. In Canada, the "gluten free" label is regulated. Any product so labeled must, in fact, be gluten free. But that is... -

ARCHIVED I'm Blown Away. Didn't Know This Contains Wheat.
psawyer replied to TammyK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This would be a violation of McD rules. I can't rule out some franchisee violating the fryer segregation rule, but nothing except fries and hash browns are allowed in the dedicated fryers at the front of the store. It has nothing to do with keeping gluten out of the fries. The taste of McDonald french fries is what distinguishes them from other fries, and... -
ARCHIVED Is This Lactose Intolerance?
psawyer replied to Beth in NC's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
"Severe villious atrophy" would cause you to be lactose intolerant. Lactose, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, is secreted by the villi. As the villi heal, they will gradually resume production of lactase. How long it will take is a difficult question. Recovery time seems to depend on many factors. They include (obviously) the severity of the damage... -
ARCHIVED Positive Tissue Transglutaminase Iga Test
psawyer replied to oogachick's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your tTG IgA is positive, then that is conclusive for celiac as I understand it. The full panel includes other tests which are required to rule out a false negative if the tTG IgA is low because of another problem causing all IgA levels to be low. Many doctors still want to do the biopsy which was the only tool before the current blood tests for antibodies... -

ARCHIVED Soy And Gluten
psawyer replied to ChristinaKs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maltodextrin is safe in North America. It is usually corn but can be potato. If it is anything else, then it must explicitly say so. Foods sold in Canada and the US must conform to the applicable country's labeling laws, regardless of where they are made. -
ARCHIVED Codeine/hydrocodon Reactions
psawyer replied to jewlesD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have used codeine for relief of moderate to severe pain since well before my diagnosis. I have not experienced any adverse reactions that I can attribute to it. I was told when it was first prescribed that constipation was a possible side effect. This was when I was experiencing explosive diarrhea, so you can imagine that I was not too worried. Some... -

We were at the store until 7. When we got home, I made dinner and we dined out on the deck, where we still are. I have the laptop out here on the table. We're still struggling with staffing issues. We had a temporary person, already trained, whom we expected to stay with us until LaboUr day, but he found a better job for the rest of the summer, and today... -

Moi? I don't tell tales out of school. Clearly, veggienft (see the Open Original Shared Link) believes we have far more power than we actually do. But we do what we can. -

I should have also mentioned that some statistical information is updated on a cyclical basis as opposed to real time. I believe that it is done hourly, so all new topics show 0 views for a while. If you watch an active thread you will see that the view counter does not go up for a while, and then jumps a number of points at once. It is nothing sinister,... -

Hi, everybody. I don't go out of my way to buy organic. Some of the specialty items we buy because of their gluten-free status also happen to be organic, but it is the gluten-free attribute, not organic, that drives those buying decisions. I'm just not convinced that the extra cost is justified. My opinion, yours may vary. So far, there has been no... -

Sorry, but this is simply not true. I think you may misunderstand what counts as a view. Looking at your own topic doesn't count, no matter how many times you do it. The topic you started today, titled "Celiac - The Autoimmune Connection, A quantum leap is coming" now has 22 views, which means that members, other than the topic starter, and not counting... -
Hi, Peter, I am also Peter. There are a number of Canadians who are regulars here, including two moderators (I am one of them). In Canada, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce is not gluten-free. It is in the US. Rice Chex are now gluten-free, but they have not been sold in Canada for many years. Welcome aboard.

Um, well maybe I can try to create some majestic BS. I never did officially work in the marketing department, but I was seconded to them frequently when I worked for H!tach! (obscured to prevent Google hits) . It has been many years, so it will take a bit to make the transformation. Seriously, I don't know any details of what befell the board yesterday... -

The board was down for about 24 hours, but Scott had to use a backup to recover. The backup was taken late Sunday, so everything that happened on Monday has been lost forever. :( So yes, we are created new posts with post and page numbers that were used already. -
