  1. Anybody eating the Caramel Peanut Detour Energy Bar? I saw that Trader Joe's lists them under their gluten-free Bars section online but, was wondering if anyone had anything to say about them....either good or bad (Reactions, etc.)

The ingredients seem okay but, I would like to double check before I risk a weeks worth of feeling lousy.

    Thanks,

  2. Amanda,

First I would bring some snack items with you from home. This will get you through the actual traveling to your destination. The airlines and airports have practically nothing for a celiac disease person to eat! Then (If you are staying for any length of time) find a local health food store in the towns you are traveling to and stock-up on some safe foods. Also, try speaking with the kitchen staff at any hotels where you will be staying in advance of your trip. See if they know what a gluten-free diet is and, if not, educate them.

For breakfast try ordering Egg Beaters. These are usually prepared in a separate pan and the risk of CC is far less than regular eggs. For lunch I usually snack on some of the items I bought at the health food store (Fruit, Lara Bars, nuts, etc.).

For dinner I look for Atkins menu items. A lot of them can be made without the sauces/gravies. If not then I stick with plain foods......Grilled chicken breast and/or steak. I survived a week-long convention on this diet and felt great.

    Best of Luck!

  3. I've eaten McD's fries twice since going gluten-free and both times I had issues. The first time was last March around St. Pat's (Had To Have My Shamrock Shake :D ) and I had mild symptoms afterward. The other time was over the summer and I had terrible pains afterward. Based on these experiences I have obstained since then and will continue to do so.

  4. This thread sounds so familiar. I had asked about the same thing last year when I first came down with celiac disease symptoms.

It's a good suggestion to take the liquid vitamins (B complex and others) as they not only get into your system but, do so quicker than tablets. I also started eating smaller meals more frequently throughtout the day. I also carry energy bars or fruit with me when I go out.

After time you will slowly start to see improvement where you can resume physical activity. This past summer I played co-ed softball (1x / wk) and golf. I would get tired but I was able to enjoy it.

Keep your chin-up.....You will get better!

  5. Debbie/Tracy,

I (luckily) only have celiac disease at this point. I just had my 1-year check-up done and all my numbers look good (Knock-on-Wood). It's not been an easy year but I do feel encouraged that all my sacrificing has helped.

Tracy--I went to Ohio University and have friends in Pomeroy (right along the Ohio River).......Beautiful country! How long have you been diagnosed w/ celiac disease?

  6. Debbie,

Hello fello Buckeye. I live just outside of Cleveland and have been gluten-free for 14-months now. I know the frustrations involved with being Celiac but, it's better than the alternative. I just had a 1-year check-up (okay, a 14-month check-up) and have shown improvement on all my Celiac numbers so it does give me a ray of hope that someday I will fell "normal" again.

    Best of Luck!

  7. Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease I used to get (this is hard to explain) these little food globs stuck in the back of my throat. It made me feel like I constantly had to clear my throat. They seemed to come-and-go thru the years and didn't bother me other than as a general nuisance. Every once-and-a-while I would even hack one up and they would be light green (sorry for being graphic) in color and smell absolutely terrible.

After a while I noticed that they would be more prevalent when I ate bread, pretzels, etc. and if I stayed away from these items then I'de be fine. The texture of these globs of food would be soft and I could actually see them sometimes in the folds of skin at the back of my throat.

Since going gluten-free I haven't had any problems and have been wondering if anyone else could relate / similar instances?

    Thanks,

    Cleveland Bob B)

  8. I've been gluten-free for a little over a year......And I was wondering how often is it recommended that one get a check-up?

I asked my GP the last time I saw him and he said he didn't know......Another clueless doctor! I have a call in to the specialist who did the endo on me and haven't heard back from her yet.

Just curious to hear what some of you "Celiac Pro's" do for scheduled health screenings?

    Thanks!

  9. I've been to PF Changs twice (Once here at home and once on vacation in Vegas) and had a great experience both times. The gluten-free menu has plenty to choose from and it is reassuring to know that the kitchen and wait staff are aware of the gluten-free needs. I almost felt like a "normal" person and enjoyed eating out without all the added stress.

I will return again and again.

  10. I prescribe to the Juicing = better asborption theory. I have been juicing on-and-off for the past year (It is a lot of work but it's worth it).

The expense can be great but if you're diligent you can find ways to cut-the-costs. Last fall I went an picked 3 bushels of apples ($10 per bushel....1 bushel = 2 paper grocery bags filled) and store them in my garage. The apples keep for months as long as the temps stay cool (I have eaten apples in March that I picked in October). Not all brands of apples store well so you should talk to your local grocer or farmer etc. to find out which brands are heartier than others (Melrose and Johnathan are good keepers). I also buy organic carrots and other items when on-sale to save money.

I prefer apple/carrot/celery juice. I also have enjoyed apple/beet/ginger. Cucumber also adds a nice flavor for a different slant on the same-old.

    Hope this helps,

  11. I'm a left side pain person.

I suffer from lots of gas bubbles and get pains anywhere from the lower abdomen up to the armpit and pectoral area. I've been to the Dr. many times and even wore a Halter monitor for 24-hrs to check-out the old ticker and everything is fine (with the exception of the gas pockets). I hope that as my intestine heals I notice less pains and get back to feeling like a "normal" person again.

    Can anyone else relate?

  12. Interesting point. I think you are right with all the gluten involved in traditional holiday celebrations.

Thanksgiving weekend '04 I almost passed out from all the stuffing, pies, cookies, etc. I was diagnosed 1-1/2 weeks later in early December '04 and have felt a lot better this holiday season.

    Best Of Luck!

  13. I, too, didn't have any GI symptoms before being diagnosed. It just sort of one-day appeared and boom....celiac. Well, it's been one-year since my diagnosis and I am feeling better. We all know how tough it can be to start being gluten-free. And, the progress can be slow especially at the beginning.

We all get the cravings for our favorite (Past) foods....But, DON'T CHEAT!. Cheating only makes things worse even if you don't show the "classic symptoms". Unfortunately this lifestyle is pretty much and all-or-nothing deal. Once you get better acclimated to the diet you'll see that it isn't as bad as you think. It's still not easy for me after a year but, it's not as bad as I first imagined it to be.

    Hang in there!
