Um... at the risk of being branded forever as irreversibly weird, my husband and I have added another source of fiber to our diets that seems to be helping a lot.
Based on those "Fiber Water" drinks they sell in the diet section, I've taken to spiking the splenda sweetened koolaide we drink with the gluten-free tasteless, dissolves in water fiber powder from the drug store. We eat a LOT of fruits and veggies, as well as brown rice, corn, and pumpkin seeds - but, well. Both the hubby and I were having... issues (I will spare you the details lol!) and figured an extra bump wouldn't hurt.
Added benefit? He (since he drinks the koolaid far more than I do - and wow, there is a bad joke in there somewhere) is finding it helps him cut back on the snacking, as he feels full longer.
Just, be careful if you try this out? I kinda, sorta, just a wee bit, misread the label the first time. Rather, spectacularly, in fact. Not only did I add WAY too much - He sat down and drank three 32 ounce glasses. It was an interesting night, to say the least, but he DID have to admit the next day he felt lighter than he had in YEARS.
Sooooo glad you posted this, I never thought to add it too my daughters koolaide. Thanks another great idea.

A few idea's:
How about pancakes, freeze and cut into strips.
Pudding or yogurt frozen in popsicle makers, my daughter loved this for years.
All the Envirokids cereals are safe, and have better nutritional value than other cereals.

I was told by the dietician to get this book on Amazon for $20. I did and it was worth every penny and then some. It it updated every 9months to a year as companies update their products.

Hello all,
Mu 6yr old was diagnosed 3 weeks ago. So we are recent to the non gluten "eating lifestyle". I have 1 child so the changes in food have been fairly easy. We have 1 shelf and 1 drawer with Gluten items for the Mr and I. The only thing in the frig with gluten is a dedicated drawer. I bought a new toaster and knife block. I thoroughly cleaned out the cabinets, shelves and drawers. Wiped out and/or vacuumed away crumbs, then soap and water washed everything. I still use my same hand mixer and processor but cleaned them really well. I also put a cover on my silverware holder to prevent crumbs from falling into it.
Did I miss anything ?
Can I still use a sponge for dishes or wiping up the counter? I dishwasher my sponge 2x a week and microwave it to kill bacteria 1x a week, is that good enough?
Are hand towels ok, since I still eat gluten myself ?
I noticed I am going through 3x as many paper towels wiping down the counters etc... but still use the sponge and hand towel for things.
Any other thoughts, I was told by the dietician to not become OCD about it but I wonder how it is really working, out in the real world?

Here's a point of interest for all of you who went so long without a diagnosis from your doctor. Our Pediatrician (who did not diagnose my daughter , the GI specialist we insisted on seeing did) called to see how our girl was doing and mentioned she is having her own child tested now because of similar symptoms. Just goes to show you how little the medical field has a handle on the disease.

Hi,
We just had our 6yr old scoped. Maintaining a gluten enriched diet before the tests helps to insure a more accurate diagnosis. Also, what if something else is going on?
They were scoping our girl and found a infection site and tested the biopsy for H.Pylori.
Here's the thing, the scope will show more than what you have now. It is very safe, we as parents suffer more anguish that they do.
By the way she tested neg for the infection and positive for Celiac. So it was worth our while. Otherwise I would have continued to feed her high fiber foods and massive quantities of laxatives as I was doing per Dr's orders for severe constipation. She was already suffering daily stomach pains in the nurses office everyday (we thought for constipation) Our Dr's instructions were to give her more WHOLE GRAINs and veggies. Finally we insisted on seeing a GI and got tested.
If you are insured, the test can't hurt to have done. Even if negative you can stop eating Gluten and see the response, No harm done. As stated gluten intolerence does necessarily show up in test.
Good luck

Hi all,
I heard that there is reimbursement from Flexible spending on Gluten free foods? Anyone doing this? I have gotten conflicting answers and it's a long wait on the phone for a person. Our HR is not familiar with it.

Here is GM's response to me. BTW I got an email response in 24 hrs. I consider that pretty good.
Thank you for contacting us about gluten in Trix and Kix cereals.
General Mills offers several products that are labeled gluten-free. Please check the package label for the gluten-free statement on the front/side/back of the package. Only products that can be verified to be gluten free will be declared as gluten free on the label. It is important to check the product label each time you purchase a product because it has the most accurate information about the product in the package.
Because we constantly strive to improve our products′ quality and nutritional value, the most up-to-date product information is on the package the product is purchased in. For that reason, we do not distribute product information lists as they could quickly become outdated. A current list of products on the market that are gluten free can be found by visiting www.liveglutenfreely.com . It is important to check the package label before purchasing for the gluten-free statement on the front/side/back of the package to verify that the package you choose is gluten free.
For products not labeled gluten free, we will always declare gluten containing ingredients if they are added to the product. If the ingredient declaration lists wheat, oats, barley, rye, or derivatives of these grains, then the product contains gluten. Examples of derivative ingredients include: malt, barley malt, organic malt, semolina, Durham, triticale, and spelt. We do not include gluten containing ingredients in the ′Natural Flavors′ or ′Spices′ on the product ingredient list. If there are gluten ingredients in our products, those ingredients are always clearly listed.
If there are no gluten- containing ingredients listed in the product ingredient label, but the product does not make a gluten free claim, it is because we cannot fully assure that this product is gluten free. While we have not added gluten-containing ingredients, factors such as sourcing, conditions of manufacture, etc. do not allow us to provide the full level of assurance that a gluten free claim requires.
FYI SAME response for other GM items ... They have the same claim for all their products.
Good luck.

I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with celiac and I think my 5 year old son has it. We've known he has wheat and dairy intolerance for a long time but were told, like I was, that we could have it in moderation. Of course gluten never came up as an issue.
I am nervous to deal with doctors for my son and the ignorance that I dealt with my whole life of being misdiagnosed. I'm hoping his ped is knowledgable but you never know.
What tests have the best accuracy rate for a 5 year old? I have read that some tests aren't sensitive enough to diagnose young kids.
We dealt with A GI specialist at Children's hospital in Boston, ma. I would recommend a children's hospital or pediatric specialty facility.
Our 6yr old girl had bloodwork which was very high and then the endoscopy a week later. Knowing we would get an answer and not a guess was well worth OUR anguish over the endoscopy. She did fine , even asked for a second icepop in the recovery room for her slightly sore throat. Yes she had a mildly sore throat for 24hours, and tried to convince me for 2 more days she needed more ice cream. No post op problems whatsoever. Our relief in getting a diagnosis in a few days after a year and a half on laxatives and high fiber foods for a misdiagnosed chronic constipation was worth it.
Her Villi were completely atrophied by the time the scope was done. Here i was increasing her fiber intake ie: Wheat, oats, etc... for the " constipation" per Dr. orders.
So yes I understand the frustration.
The test was pretty simple. They put them to sleep with a mask first, before they IV them. An hour or so prep time, 30 + minute surgery time (they do a biopsy during the scope), then an hour post op time. You will spend much more time than that worrying over it.
Good luck.

Hi,
Anyone out there experience this. My 6 1/2 yr old was recently diagnosed. We changed her diet 1 week ago and she is now over emotional and hyper sensitive. She cries over small problems and gets angry easier. Is this the diet change? any feedback is welcome.

Gluten Free Kids And Seizures

My girl does not have seizures. But, since going gluten free 3 wks ago she is more prone to crying or angry outbursts. She also has a large amount of stool in her colon due to celiac disease that we are treating with M.O.M. that causes her to have slips of # 1 and 2.
good luck
