  1. Wow. Again thanks for so much info Skylark. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. (In a good way.) Off to ponder...
  2. I also noticed that the pdoc really wasn't impressed by my thoughts on gluten. She asked me why we went off gluten and then as I was explaining my reasoning, she interrupted me at one point and said "You're jumping around a lot here." Um, no I'm explaining a history that led to my eliminating gluten 2 months ago... I would love to find a pdoc who would...
  3. What are some of the older meds? I know of Lithium, but that's the only one I'm familiar with. The doc mentioned a few even newer meds but mentioned that since I've only ever taken Celexa that Lamictal would probably work well.
  4. Thanks starrytrekchic! One of my big concerns here is the risks associated with quitting a med once I've started. This whole "bipolar" concept is new and a really big blow. I'm just not sure about it... both my mom and hubby agree that I fit the profile, but I'm having some trouble embracing it. I'm almost going through a grieving process (which...
  5. Thanks RiceGuy. Your input is also very valuable. We moved into a house with brand new carpeting (installed about 2 weeks before we moved in and man it stank!) but my depression predates the move by quite a bit. The anxiety did kick in full force about 6 weeks after we moved though. I avoid msg and artificial sweeteners like the poisons they are...
  6. Thanks for responding Skylark. I've seen you talk about bipolar and I was hoping you'd provide your insight. I'm not currently on any meds, is EPP effective enough to start on it and expect results fairly quickly? With the Lamictal it's basically a 30+ day ramping up process, with me watching out for a rash, and side effects which include anxiety and...
  7. I had my first visit with a psychiatrist today, and was underwhelmed with her for several reasons. After the list of questions she went through, and the issues she highlighted and asked me to elaborate on, I wasn't surprised when she dx'd bipolar. She seems to think I've had bpII my whole life. I do have a strong family history of mental illness, and I...
  8. That makes sense - I probably got glutened, too and as a result I may be overreacting to some of DS's behavior. Today was another bad day. He's being very "intense" - he literally cannot be more than a few feet away from either me or DH and needs one of us to be paying attention exclusively to him at all times. He follows us around, even to the bathroom...
  9. We ate at Chick-fil-a yesterday as a treat for my little guy's birthday. We've had CFA a few times and had really good luck with ordering grilled nuggets for the kids with no ill effects. But yesterday a couple hours after lunch both DH and older DS had tummy troubles, and today DS's behavior has been really off the charts. If your child has behavioral...
  10. Today is my baby boy's birthday - he's THREE today! We had dinner at the IL's to celebrate. Originally the plan was to have them over for dinner, but it's been a really bad week for us and we all decided to switch to eating over there. I made gluten-free cupcakes to bring, and there was absolutely no grief about it. In fact, they actually researched...
  11. To keep it away, avoid iodine and gluten like the PP said. To relieve the itching, I've had good luck with cold compresses, and sometimes a little bit of castor oil or pure aloe vera gel is quite soothing.
  12. How could I forget stir-fry! One of our favorite quick meals. Dice up a bit of chicken, throw in some frozen veggies and gluten-free soy sauce and a few spices and YUM.
  13. OMG malt! Serious duh moment happening here. I've been SO careful until this point and I've even avoided Rice Krispies and whatnot because I knew they had malt. What was I thinking???
  14. I'd love some more ideas for gluten-free meals that aren't designed to be gluten-free. Like tonight we had Shepherd's Pie (aka hamburger pie) - casserole layered with seasoned ground beef, tomato sauce, a veggie (I used diced zucchini), mashed potatoes and cheese. Other meals we like include: - Hamburger patties with fries and a veggie (usually corn...
  15. We usually do fruit and a protein for breakfast. My kids eat dairy so often it's cheese in some form (cottage or cubes) or yogurt, but we also do bacon, ham or organic hot dogs. My kids blow through cold cereal like it's water so we don't buy it much. lol Most gluten-free pancake mixes can be purchased on (Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum...
  16. I picked up some treats for myself at the store the other day, including a package of Whoppers. I read the label and didn't see anything that would cause concern so I figured it would be safe. Saturday morning I was really craving chocolate so I got them out for myself and gave the kids a few (okay we all had more than a few lol.) Within an hour I could...
  17. Within days, older son's rash disappeared, and his behavior did a 180 turn for the better. We were considering an evaluation for autism, but now as long as we keep gluten out of his diet I don't think it's necessary. He can actually function and has lost most of his aggressive behavior. He got glutened this weekend and I got a glimpse of what he used to...
  18. My costo started around the same time as my DH rash, which was shortly after my 2nd child was born. I never really connected the two until I started researching gluten just a few months ago. I've been close to pain free since eliminating gluten. One of my (many) signs of a glutening is chest pain or a foreboding tightness in my chest.
  19. We've done the Betty Crocker gluten-free mixes and my kids (and the rest of us) love them. Definitely not cardboard! I even served gluten-free cupcakes at DS's birthday party a few weeks ago and I don't think anyone could tell the difference. Wouldn't you know MIL brought gluteny cream puffs and didn't eat any gluten-free cake. Her own little PA protest...
  20. My maternal grandmother died of colon cancer just before I was born. My mother has polyps on her colon and has been on cancer watch for years.
  21. Exactly! Her whole side of the family has tummy issues - frequent and chronic heartburn and who knows what else. She's on meds for allergies, cholesterol (and then something else b/c the cholesterol meds messed up her liver!), heartburn... BIL is only 29 and already has high blood pressure plus all the rest! Last week at dessert hubby tried to tell MIL...
  22. Last week was FIL's birthday. We went out to Chili's and the kids, hubby and I had some delicious gluten-free food, with no apparent after-effects. YAY! But then after dinner we went to the IL's for cake. MIL was really irritated that we couldn't eat the cake she bought. She tried to convince DH that it didn't have wheat in it because it was a fruit torte...
  23. Is anyone familiar with the Central Market (HEB) brands? I've been eating the organic corn chips when they don't list "mfg in facility with wheat blah blah" and I *think* they're ok. They have tortilla chips and a new frito-type chip.
  24. I love these chips. I'm so glad that they're safe.
  25. I would love to know for sure but I suspect progesterone. I had debilitating foot pain and severe depression/anxiety until I was about 6wks pregnant with my son. Then, magically, it went away for a few months. The foot pain actually didn't start to come back until he was close to a year, right before my first period returned, so I really think it's hormones...
