  1. Somehow I have come down with a cold or something. I have a nagging cough, sinus congestion, extremely sore throat. Was up all night last night coughing and blowing my nose. I had some halls cough drops but they weren't cutting it. I have upped my vitamin C and I'm drinking lots of liquids to try to fight this thing, but I think I'm going to need an OTC drug. I hate drugs. I only take as a last resort. I am very sensitive so something that I can safely take half of the recommended dose of would be good. I know how to do a search, but my head is too foggy and I'm too tired, please tell me some OTC drugs that are gluten free and soy free would be good too, but in this state I will risk the soy. Thanks in Advance.

PS: I know all the natural remedies, have neti pot, tea with honey, etc.

My son loved the neti pot when he had his last cold. He said it was "amazing" www.glutenfreedrugs.com has a list of gluten-free cold meds. I think they are under both list and the alpha list.

  2. I've googled bboth this morning with different answers. I had to take advil for a medical biopsy yesterday. While waiting in office a full blown gluten attack starts! This morning I took some tylenol for the mild headache. I ate the same thing for lunch both days. So any ideas? Are the meds gluten-free? I know glutenfreedrugs has them both as gluten-free, so if that is true. I introduced avocado yesterday and today. I'm starting to have another reaction, sharp pains in my sides and foggy brain. Help! I've been so carefull in my kitchen, so I don't think it was from there.

  3. Carolina Your link didn't work work for me.

One other thing to note is that if any of your drugs are generic you or the pharmacist should be checking with the company at each refill as the binders can be changed at the companies will. With name brand drugs the binders need to stay the same. Also any list can be out of date as of the day it was last updated so IMHO it is always best to double check with the maker.

Sorry about the link, it was glutenfreedrugs.com that was mentioned. I didn't see that mentioned before. I try to stay brand name, if not they are pretty good at calling. Thanks for the info.

  4. Hi all!

I am still working on the fine tuning of my new gluten-free life. I take a few pills every day that are prescribed to me from my doctor. I have heard that some pills can contain gluten, but I am a little overwhelmed about how I find out this information?! Do you ask the pharmacist? Your doctor? Do you look up the drug name/manufacturer/ingredients online? It's not like RX's come with an ingredients list right? Or does it?!

Here is what I take, but I don't know the manufacturers just yet, I'll call Rite Aid tomorrow and get details, but if anyone has experience with any of these, I'd love for you to chime in!

    Atenolol - blood pressure

    Prozac - depression (although since going gluten-free, I don't think I need them anymore...but that's another story!)

    Xanax - anxiety

My dietion told me about this site and my pharmacist uses it. Has anyone used this site before?

  5. I have had the worst luck with people not understanding or having NO clue what I'm talking about when I ask about gluten ingredients in things. From people saying "Oh no there's no sugar in this" to telling me they checked the ingredients and everything is A-OK! because the actual WORD gluten is not listed in the ingredients!! (I wish it was that easy!!!!!) So it has happened again and I need some help. I have seen on here people talking about needing to check dental cleaning supplies while at the dentist office. I have an appointment next week (my first since diagnosis) and so I called them yesterday to give them a head-up on my new diagnosis and also to give them time to find out about the gluten in their products. Well of courseeeeee they say they've never heard of gluten and no one has asked about it before in the office. (great!) I live in a relatively well-sized city with multiple gluten free menus in different restaurants, large celiac support group, etc, so I KNOW I'm not the only one in the city that has these concerns. Anyway...... the woman says let me find out and call you tomorrow. So I get a phone call this morning from her saying that she had one of the dental assistants check the ingredients and I'm all good b/c gluten is not listed as an ingredient. Of course I have to go through the whole thing where I have to explain that gluten itself will not be listed, they need to look for other keywords etc, and could they contact the manufacturer and ask them b/c they are likely to know what sort of excipients are in things. Now, I'm waiting....... My question for everyone, what do you do in these situations? I always end up feeling like I am not getting a for sure certain answer to feel comfortable that gluten is not in things, like pills, dental stuff, etc. How do you get thru to people? HOw do you find out for sure if it's safe? I am having so many problems with this. Food is not a big deal, if I can't find out for sure I just don't eat it, but for example, I can't just stop going to the dentist forever. How do you help people get a clue??

I plan to do what Richard suggested, call the company of the products. My dental office had no clue as well.

  6. I have been able to take meals into certain places, but a club?? Can you call the club in advance to ask? I don't know if they would like the brought in beer, they may frown upon it. They see it as a cut in their profit. However, you may run across someone who is understanding. There are few places around me that have Redbridge on tap. I have found the more "different beers" a places carries they have Redbridge. You may want to call and ask if they serve that and or wine and go from there. When I traveled I made sure to always have snacks and fruit with me wherever I went. Bottle water and soft soap to wash my hands. Paper towels and baggies were my friend on my vacation. Have fun!

  7. I feel terrible if I get stressed out, AND I felt worse after coming back from the beach. It's possible that you are getting tiny cc's and they add up to a big reaction?

I love that you are taking the precautions with doing the dishes, I would too! Just give it time, I am finally not having constant pain in my side, 4 months after going gluten-free! It is hard to be patient but it was really worth it to me :)

Thanks! I'm trying to look around my home for CC possiblities. I made a "bread" basket for my children and it has its own table away from counters. They can only use that table for making their sandwich or toast. Some days the pain gets overwhleming. My sides hurt all the time except when I first wake up. Thanks again for the hope! :)

  8. I got up with a little pain this morning and it increased as the day went on. My side hurt really bad and I have back pain. No headache right now. I cannot figure out why the increased pain. I have pain everyday, usually moderate after I eat and it grows from there. I've bought a new pot for my food etc. It gives me hope when I see it does take months to feel better, I just wish I could figure out if it's because my intestines are shot or am I CC myself a little here and there. On vacation I was feeling better, coming home I'm hurting more. So, is it my home or I was more relaxed on vacation?

Do any of you feel worse if you are under stress?

I also have to hand wash dishes. I switched brushes and use gloves, but feel like I react there. I clean my dishes first, change brushes etc, and wash the gluten ones. Am I being paranoid?

  9. This diet is hard, no question. When you get up in the morning, you have to ask yourself whether your food preference is more important, or the chance to test for sure whether celiac is the cause of your crushing fatigue.

I tend to eat fruit and some cheese or a Larabar or a Kind bar in the morning. Sometimes I eat peanut butter on gluten-free toast because it's fast and something I really like. On the weekend, I make an omelette and gluten-free toast or huevos rancheros with corn tortillas (Mission brand is made on dedicated lines).

Huevos rancheros sounds yummy, thanks for the idea! I am so thankful for this forum!

  10. Yes, I was referring specifically to Rice and Corn Chex. They both say loudly "Gluten Free" right on the box, though I understand that that's something new. I eat them almost every day for breakfast. You have reactions to these cereals? Wow, what do you eat for breakfast?

I have found there are a few gluten free products that I'm sensitive to. Chex being one of them, I did aliright with a glutino cereal. I eat eggs/boiled usually and fresh fruit for breakfast. I do well with Kinnikinnick products. Right now I'm trying not to eat many gluten free replacement foods.

  11. Can some one help an old lady out that needs a good gluten-free eye cream and face lotion? I've tried Burts Bees and we aren't getting along. Tried oil of olay..no good. As soon as I put theses creams on my face it turns it red. Any help or ideas?! I called Bare Escentails and they said that thier creams had wheat and oat in them. I couldn't get a clear answer from a few others. I emailed NARS. but haven't heard back on them.

  12. Looks like there are quite few chains there: Open Original Shared Link

Are you going for vacation or business? Either way, have fun!

Thank you so much! I had come across this site a few days ago and could not find it again in my searches. It's vacation and this will be my first attempt out to eat. Thanks again!

  13. If I'm staying at someone house I bring my own pan to cook in as well as a good knife and cutting board. If I'm staying at a hotel, I take plenty of food that is ready or easy to prepare and picnic ware (plastic spoons, plates, foil, saran wrap, containers to put leftovers in etc). I pretend I'm going camping and try to think of everything I could possibly need if I didn't have access to a store.

I also figure out ahead of time where the nearest grocery stores and safe restaurants are and make up a binder with directions to them from my hotel. I include in the binder the lists of safe and unsafe food from this site. I also put in the printed gluten-free menu's of the places I plan to eat (if available online). I also try to find out where there are wifi hotspots if I'm going to be in a big city and away from my hotel for extended periods of time. I have a GPS so I just write down the names of the places and addresses, but it helps to have printed directions as well if I know I will be goign from one place to anohter (sometimes my GPS routes me a funky way and online direction or asking people who live there can give a more direct route).

Three musts in a hotel room are: microwave, fridge and highspeed internet. If I'm staying for more than a day or two I try to get a suite with a kitchenette at one of those extend-stay type places. They usually have a stove to cook on and a full size fridge with freezer as well so it makes it possible to cook meals in room and save money (or avoid boredom having to eat at the same place for a week if there's not a variety of gluten-free friendly restaurants).

I hope you have a good trip! I love to travel and have always planned my travel out, but being gluten free takes extra planning. You cannot over-prepare or over-plan IMO.

Thank you both so much! I brought some food and did find some places with gluten-free menus. I have a good store to go to, bought foil etc. I have my own pan too. I am still learning so much!!! I stopped at a Wendys and got a baked potato. I didn't tell them about the cleiac. I watched as the girl make a burger then unwrap the potato! So, I stopped them and the girl who toook my order said "are you allergic to bread" so, they had the girl change gloves. I know now to tell everyone everytime! I'm learning!

  14. I'm traveling for the first time as a celiac. I was wondering some of your "must haves" when you travel. From food to other products. It's 6 hours away, so I'm bring what I feel I need and my personal products as a first timer. Do any of you bring your toaster etc?

  15. For shopping there is a fairly good health food store, directly next to the Outer Banks Bread Company in Kitty Hawk. Farm Fresh has gluten free foods, but not in a specific section. You should be able to find breads, pasta and cereals.

High Cotton, at mile post one, has super ribs, brisket and BBQ chicken and are knowledgeable about gluten free service. Just let them know. Ask for Will Thorp. But, most restaurants have fresh seafood and can cook it to your liking and most are happy to accommodate special requests.

Lone Cedar Restaurant (on the causeway toward Manteo) had the best scallops and a dedicated fryer for fries. Also, they serve the best cold plate I have ever eaten, with fresh seafood. There is an Outback in Nags Head.

Ordering in a restaurant at the beach should not be a problem, but I would suggest you go during non busy times, or call a head, late afternoon and talk to the manager.

It's beautiful there. Hope you have a great time.

    Thank you!!

  16. ...After six months of very little progress - still feeling bloated and icky, should post about that soon - I noticed today that my fingernails are getting longer and stronger. Not sure if I should put it down to coeliac recovery or my efforts to increase my calcium intake but hey, one part of my is looking healthier. Woooo!

I used to bite my nails all the time. I noticed after going gluten free my nails were longer and I wasn't doing that anymore??? I've been gluten free for two months and still having pain and bloating. I am having a difficult time with CC. I think.
