  1. I have a nickel allergy and I can't wear cheap jewelry at all. I once had a belt buckle give me a rash on my bellybutton -- it was awful. As for white gold, not all of it is made with nickel. My wedding band has never given me a problem. I'm not sure how one would find out what the alloy metal is in a particular piece of jewelry, though. I wear...
  2. I suffer from acid reflux which I think is a consequence of the celiac. It has never progressed to the level of GERD or anything. I don't have any hernias, etc -- my doctor checked when she did the endoscopy. She told me just to take omeprazole indefinitely, but I'm concerned about things like calcium and vitamin absorption, plus I hate how if I miss a...
  3. Maybe I got a bad batch or something, but I got glutened really badly by Quaker rice cakes. I found a health food store nearby that has Corn Thins, though, so I'm looking forward to trying those.
  4. I'm thinking about doing an elimination diet, too, unfortunately I have only been gluten-free for a little over three weeks but I am getting sick again and I can't figure out what's doing it. (My kitchen is completely gluten-free, etc.) I will say, if you can quit caffeine cold turkey, you might be okay. I did that a few years ago. The first day...
  5. Thanks, all. The recipe looks tasty and I will give it a try. Here is a link to the Lundberg products that are gluten free: Open Original Shared Link There are several risottos, but unfortunately no chicken. The broccoli cheddar one does look good.
  6. I believe all of the pure spices from McCormick's are gluten free, though that might not be true for anything that's a spice blend. Also, everything from Penzeys Spices is gluten free.
  7. So obviously Rice a Roni and Lipton Rice sides are out of bounds now, since they have wheat pasta in. Are there any brands of boxed chicken-flavor rice mix that are gluten free? I know they're super highly processed, but Lipton Rice creamy chicken flavor was one of my very favorites before I stopped gluten and I'm craving it like mad. Barring a mix...
  8. Thanks for the tips! Can the duct tape go through the dishwasher?
  9. Honestly, I bought a couple of pots for my parents' house and as soon as I get a chance I'm getting them some glass containers for my leftovers and some plastic spoons that I'll mark gluten-free somehow. That way I don't feel bad about asking them to use my specific tools.
  10. I did talk to the waitress about my ordering off the gluten-free menu, telling her I was grateful that I was able to order things there, etc. She said that a lot of people are really happy. I didn't say anything beyond that and that's really my fault -- I am not confident enough yet, I guess. Honestly I would rather eat at home until I'm more stable but...
  11. There is a Jewel supermarket and a Dominick's supermarket both within five minutes driving distance. (I'm not sure of the roads there, especially if you're able to walk nearby or not.) Jewel has a serviceable amount of gluten-free stuff. Dominick's, I'm not sure about -- it's pretty much the only local supermarket that I haven't hit yet since going gluten...
  12. I know you mentioned you take Immodium, but how much do you take? If I know I'm going out somewhere and my stomach is upset, I'll take two first thing in the morning and if I get sick I'll take another. The kind I take has a max dose of four a day but sometimes I've taken that in maybe two hours. Once I get to that point I'm set. I've been able to be...
  13. Where in Chicago will you be? If you aren't comfortable posting that openly, feel free to PM me. Hopefully I can find you a grocery store nearby.
  14. I guess it had to happen sometime, right? I have been off gluten since 10/10. On Friday afternoon, I went to a local restaurant that offers a gluten-free menu with my sister and some friends. (They ordered off the regular menu.) I'm not really sure what happened -- did I get a crumb of bread from the others at my table? Did my food get contaminated...
  15. Thanks, all. I went with the stainless steel because the aluminum was really flimsy. If anyone needs new cookware and can get to a restaurant supply store, definitely check it out. I got some good deals and was able to buy some pans for my mom's house, too, so I don't have to worry about getting glutened at her house.
  16. Thank you for that link, Skylark. You know how there are five or seven stages of grief? I think I'm at denial. I keep reloading this page and reading over again all the responses so that I can convince myself that it's true.
  17. It would be so great if going gluten free made my keratosis pilaris go away. I have spent a LOT of money on treatments, creams, etc to make it go away, but nothing worked. I even went to the dermatologist, who gave me a urea cream that smelled like pee. I only used that one once. I just went gluten-free but I'm definitely going to be paying attention...
  18. I'm off dairy for now, because I just started with the gluten-free diet, but before I went off I took Lactaid ALL the time. It slowly stopped working for me, too, so I just started taking two of them at a time. It worked.
  19. I have cleaned out most of my cabinets and gotten rid of all my nonstick cookware. I have a couple of stainless steel skillets and some hard anodized pans -- are those okay? They're not visibly scratched -- but I do need to fill out some holes in kitchen. I'm lucky enough to be able to go to a restaurant supply store tomorrow, where the cookware is very...
  20. Thanks everyone. Sorry for the freakout. I have an anxiety disorder, too, so I'm thinking the withdrawal triggered something. I had no idea that there were different types of tests. So the IgG means celiac, for sure? When I called for my biopsy results (before I got them in my hands) the nurse told me -- "No gluten allergy! You're fine!" I guess it...
  21. I got a copy of my blood test and biopsy results. I'm so mad! The doctor only took THREE samples during the biopsy. I thought she was supposed to take more than five? I feel like I did the procedure, anesthesia, etc for nothing. Here's what I have. Can anyone help me interpret them? Endomysial Antibody IgA t-Transglutaminase (tTG) <2...
  22. I shop a lot from Amazon -- I have a Prime account, which means that I get free two-day shipping if a product is sold by Amazon -- and I wondered what the best deals were? I saw that they sell twelve packs of the Blue Diamond Nut Thins for what works out to be about $2.30 a box. I got the crackers for $2 a box the other day at Whole Foods, but that was...
  23. Thanks! I will try to get the lab results but I went gluten-free yesterday. This morning, I woke up without debilitating stomach cramps for the first time in months. Is it possible for me to feel better this quickly, or is it the placebo effect? I will say that I am EXHAUSTED, which I've read is a side effect of going gluten-free, too.
  24. My first post on this forum... hoping for some advice. A couple of years ago, I started having pretty severe diarrhea and stomach cramps most days. I finally went to the doctor, who diagnosed IBS and told me to take fiber pills and a probiotic. The probiotic was a waste of $30. I took the fiber pills for several months, even as my symptoms got worse...
