  1. I was wondering if anyone here has issues with milk? I tried lactaid milk and still have issues. Whenever I consume it, I get tightness around my abdominal area, anxiety/panic feeling and my chest feels heavy and I also feel little dizzy and weird. Then I have constipation and feel bloated. I also think certain types of milk cause my symptoms to flare up. With cheese or yogurt its not so bad. Organic milk seems to be the worst! Anyone here has similar symptoms? Also, how long does it take for the symptoms to subside and go away? Just wondering...

Its been 8 months now and I'm still malabsoring Vitamin D, Iron and B12. I do take supplements but if I stop them my levels start to go down. Is this normal? Does it take time to stabilize these levels? My doctor thinks it can take up to 2-3 years... Plz advice!

  2. Can leaky gut cause panic/anxiety attacks? I am gluten free for 7 months and I do get anxiety/panic attacks sometimes when I eat certain types of food but not really sure which foods exactly trigger them. The anxiety/panic feeling has gone down quite a bit since I went gluten free. However, I think some secondary intolerance is causing them. Could it be yeast? milk? Anyone here has similar issues? I also feel tightness in my abdominal area almost all the time and feel bloated/constipated and that is when the anxiety is at its peak!

  3. I'm on a gluten free diet for 7 months now.. When I was diagnosed I had lost about 30 lbs in just 3 months without even exercising! I had severer panic/anxiety attacks and felt miserable. Right now my anxiety has gone down quite a bit but do have symptoms sometimes. Also, I gained about 10 lbs back in the last 6 months, most of them gained in last 2 months! Is gaining weight a good sign that we're starting to absorb better? Any other common signs?

    Thanks!

  4. Go ahead and take it. If you have excess in your system you will simply excrete it. There is no toxic level for B12 as it is water soluable. Your doctor can retest in a few months to see if you can step down to a lower level.

    Thanks!

On this website, under the "seasonings" section it says that yeast extract has gluten (barley), is it true? Any read something like this before?

  5. Hi,

I've been on a gluten free diet for 6-7 months now and have been taking B12 injections every month and Vitamin D3 pills. Today my doctor went over my report and found out I am really low in Iron. Previously I was medium-low but now I'm low but not anemic (still not deficient). So he started me on Iron supplements and will do my tests again in a month. My B12 after taking about 12 injections (last 6 months) is still not that high. It is kind of medium, like 520 something. The range I believe is from 200-1200.. not sure of the units. My doctor says if you take injections then it depends on the time you get tested after taking the injection (mine was after 3 weeks after getting the 12th injection) because the body starts absorbing B12 and B12 levels start to fall. Therefore, he now recommends to take B12 supplements instead of the injections because taking them will project a more realistic B12 number next time he does the tests.

I was wondering how long does it take for B12 and Iron levels to become stable and not change even after stopping supplements? My doctor says it takes anytime between 1 - 2 years but I wanted to get your opinion here.

    Thanks!

  6. Thanks everyone.. the most worrying symptom I have is chest tightness and anxiety attacks after eating food (sometimes). I still have random bouts of headaches, constipation is better since I'm taking Trifala (herbal medicine given by my doctor). I'm also taking some digestive enzymes. I think I'm having secondary food intolerance symptoms. I've narrowed it to yeast (maybe) or in general starches/carbohydrates or fatty foods. The way I'm looking at this is that my body is healing and is unable to break down certain foods to absorb completely. Those unbroken/undigested foods enter the blood stream and intoxicate the brain via leaky gut syndrome causing my symptoms. Another explanation is shortage of enzymes to break down other foods (apart from gluten) temporarily but not sure which ones! This also related to what I mentioned about leaky gut syndrome.

  7. Thank you for your input! It's only been a month and I have been sick for a long time, so I figure it will be a while. just having the "D" stop has been a very good thing!!

I am wondering about the corn myself. I'll just have to be patient, see what my body "tells me". It's been telling me things aren't right for some time now and I listened :>)

It helps immensely to have you all on here to talk to---for reassurance and encouragement. I have felt pretty lonesome with this disease and having to figure things out myself makes it all the more overwhelming...so thanks a million!!

I too have had severe mood swings and anxiety. I still have them but I think I've now narrowed it down to yeast. Anything that I eat with high yeast content gives me anxiety, mood swings, constipation, head aches etc etc.. list goes on! I can tolerate a little bit but too much really screws me up for at least a week and I think I'm having it as a secondary intolerance due to my damaged gut. My test results for yeast allergy were negative but I am 99% sure that I have some degree of intolerance. Yeast is present in a lot of stuff, like cheese, chips, breads, biscuits even if these products are gluten free. The gluten free bread that I've been eating is making me sick actually because it seems to have yeast. Try to eliminate it completely and see if it helps your mood.

  8. Some updates: I went and checked all the labels of gluten free chips and breads that I have been consuming and found out that all of them had some type of yeast. Most of them had at least yest extract. I was only eating rice and quinoa for 3 months and recently started to introduce gluten free breads into my diet (about a month or so back). Now I'm thinking it is the yeast causing my anxiety, tightness in chest and breathing issues. Although the symptoms are not as severe as they were about 6 months back but they're still there. I'm assuming I'll be able to tolerate yeast after healing is done but it might take aa while I guess. I was also tested for yeast overgrowth/allergy and it was negative. Is it possible to have yeast intolerance? Is there a test for it? Did anyone here have similar experience? Thanks for sharing!

  9. Some of us react to nightshades and tomatoes are part of that family. Do you notice the same reaction to potatoes?

Don't lose heart if it seems you react to more and more things. Some of us are reactive to a lot of stuff until we heal. At diagnosis I tested positive to allergies to 98 of 99 things tested for. By six months into the diet I only had 3 allergies left. My doctor said my immune system was in hyperdrive but after it had calmed down I was able to add everything but soy and gluten back in.

BTW nice to know that you're feeling better and getting rid of the allergies! Do you mind sharing how much time it took for you to reach this stage? i.e. getting rid of the allergies from the time of diagnosis! Do you maintain a strict gluten free diet? Have you got cross contaminated sometimes? Also do you happen to know the technical reasons why we develop food allergies/intolerance and later get rid of them like in your case?

Sorry for asking too many questions! Thanks for sharing your information and experience in advance! ;)

Thanks for the advice and consolation! My doctor didn't test me for different types of allergies. He only tested me for soy, milk, eggs and gluten. I was negative for all except gluten! Do you recommend I see an allergist too? Now I'm trying to make a list of foods to keep track. I think tomatoes, yeast or dairy so far have been causing my issues. The most annoying symptom is the anxiety and tightness in chest. The symptoms come from no where and lasts a few days and subside! Everything else I can handle but this symptom annoys the heck out of me :D and I think some other food is causing it (not gluten).

  11. I get breathing issues sometimes too- I attribute it to anxiety since I have had so many tests and everything seems to be OK. I definitely am an anxious person and the celiac dx didn't help! LOL

Sure, but I think some foods elevate anxiety. In my case I think its milk even though I tested negative for milk allergy. I think I can tolerate a little yogurt and cheese but too much of it causes my symptoms. Although, my anxiety symptoms are less severe than they used to be 6 - 7 months back, they're still annoying! I also noticed that whenever I am anxious, I have extreme constipation and I feel awful whenever I eat something. I'm starting to feel much better from the last time I consumed dairy. It's been about a week or so now! I'm seriously thinking its the dairy stuff that's causing my symptoms. I think you should also try removing dairy from your diet and see if it helps!

  12. ive had panic attacks, anxiety, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, panic under exercise or work, etc over the last 6 years-> i had all the EKG stuff done, breathing tests, etc.. i was guessing for years- no asthma

ive been to therapists, and been on paxil & xanax, etc, etc..

i knew i had a problem with wheat over the last 10 years- but i had no idea how much was involved here.

i recently got dx with Hashimoto's Hypothyroid- and its is UNBELIEVABLE- i had NO IDEA it was behind at least 98% of my Anxiety- since they added Cytomel to my Synthroid- my Anxiety & shortness of breath is 70% better. i had NO IDEA.

i did get my B12 tested last year- a B12 deficiency is common amongst Gluten Intolerants- and this will cause anxiety too! and panic attacks!

i just got a CBC done- to check for any Anemia, and my vit D levels.

*my advice to you- would be to check your B12, D, Iron levels, and full Thyroid panel!! these are all very common issues for people with gluten intolerance- and they can all (except the D maybe)-> be the culprit behind panic attacks!!! and stand your ground till your docs have covered all of it. my PCP didnt want to hear about me wanting to add Cytomel-> she just wanted to have me re-do my breathing tests & get on Antidepressants! im so happy i spoke up- cause im finally on the right track

i hope you find your answers soon!!!! cause anxiety/breathing issues are NOT fun at all... keep us posted & hope u feel better!

Thanks for replying everyone! I did have borderline low B12 and Vitamin D deficiency and I have been taking B12 shots and Vitamin D supplements from last 8 months or so. My doctor (who's a gluten intolerance expert) says my anxiety symptoms are mostly due intestine permeability allowing toxins to flow directly into the blood stream and then this has an adverse effect on the brain by stimulating certain regions of it. He said over time it will go away but it takes time for the gut to heal and the mind to adjust... and in fact I am feeling better but I think it is the dairy causing elevated anxiety and breathing issues. I'm noticing a trend now from the time I consume dairy:

    1. Feel lethargic, insomnia and dry itchy skin, extreme constipation and lack of concentration for few days.

    2. Panic/anxiety lasting for 2-3 days.

    3. Repeat 1. for few days.

    4. Start to feel better slowly.

All the above steps can take anywhere from few days to couple of weeks depending on how much dairy I consume... Again I'm not sure if dairy is the issue but I think mostly it is because I've been gluten free for only 3 months or so. I was tested for milk, soy, eggs allergy and all were negative. I do take enzymes if I consume a heavy meal and a herbal supplement called Trifala (highly recommended).

I'm feeling little better now, at least anxiety has gone down almost 80%.. hope to feel better soon and recover from all my symptoms! Has anyone here have extreme dry skin and other skin problems due to gluten intolerance? I have extremely dry skin and my mouth is dry all the time. I feel thirsty a lot too!

  13. Has it been a while since you excercised hard? You may have simply over done it. It could perhaps be related to being intolerant of dairy and I think it is a good idea to avoid it for a bit if you haven't had this happen before and it is new since you reintroduced dairy. It would also be a good idea to have your doctor check your blood pressure and mention this to him at your next visit.

Yes I've been exercising harder than what I did today and this didn't happen. It happened just today, I feel very panicky and nervous for no reason and the only thing that I did started a little dairy a week back or so. I've noticed that some of my muscles twitch, like my right arm, some muscles in my thigh etc.. I'm not sure exactly but looks like dairy may have caused my symptoms. I also had some frozen yogurt yesterday too! I'll wait a couple of days and see and if I don't see any improvements I'll probably go see my doctor!

  14. Hi,

I've been diagnosed as non-celiac gluten intolerant and have been gluten free for about 4 months now. Today I did some running and right after it I felt some pressure in my head, feel panicky, my breathing is heavy and body and chest muscles feel tight. Could this be related to gluten intolerance even after being glulten free for 4 months now? I have gone to emergency room before and have done EKG etc and everything was normal. Recently I started do drink a little dairy a couple of weeks back, just very little!

Also could my symptoms be just of a panic/anxiety attack?

Thanks, any advice or help is appreciated!

My doctor gave me some digestive enzymes to take and I've been feeling a little better now after taking them. I think I have some degree of lactose intolerance also going on. Do you guys here think that my symptoms could be just related to anxiety caused by lactose intolerance? I think I will stay dairy free now too.. How long should I be dairy free till I can start introducing?

  16. Pounding heart beat or tachycardia is my standard allergy reaction to cane sugar, one of my diagnosed (by ELISA blood test) IgG mediated allergies. I don't even have to eat a meal with cane sugar to get that reaction. I only need to take a Tylenol caplet which has cane sugar coating. So my tachycardia is not related to delayed gastric emptying. I also get tachycardia if my thyroid dose is too high. Tachycardia is a hyper (too much) thyroid symptom.

However, I did have delayed gastric emptying for years, even after diagnoses of and abstaining from gluten and 6 other food allergies. My delayed gastric emptying (also called gastroparesis) was caused by inadequate stomach acid, which was diagnosed by a Heidelberg capsule test for stomach acid production. My symptoms of gastroparesis were bloating, gas, and feeling very full after eating very little, but not feeling satisfied. The food felt like rocks in my stomach. I also noticed lots of undigested stuff in my stool.

Now I take hydrochloric acid capsules with each meal. Those improved my stomach acid level. So I no longer have delayed gastric emptying or any of those indigestion symptoms.

I never heard of tachycardia being caused by gastroparesis. I have heard of triphala being used for constipation. So maybe triphala improves gut motility, which could improve gastric emptying time. Since gastroparesis could also be caused by undiagnosed food allergies or gluten intolerance, I'd like to hear from others who have delayed gastric emptying or gastroparesis ... What are your gastroparesis symptoms?

    SUE

From what I understand, tachycardia is different from pounding heart beat.. tachycardia is when you have a heart rate of 100+ beats per minute and pounding heart beat is just your normal heart rate (mine is around 60 - 75 bpm). You could have tachycardia and pounding heart beat but in my case I only have the pounding heart beat sensation.

I have tightness/cramping in my abdomen, tightness in throat, pounding heart beat, fatigue and either loose stools or constipation.

I was initially misdiagnosed with gastritis by another doctor and took Nexium (acid blocker) for 15 days. Do you think this could be causing my acid production and causing it as well?

  17. Hi,

I met my doctor recently to talk about the pounding heart beat symptom after eating meals and got some answers. According to him, it happens due to delay in gastric emptying. The food break down flow process in your body is in haywire and there's a timing mismatch between the time the food enters and the production of enzymes in pancreas. This causes the new food we eat to accumulate in the GI tract, which can then cause blockage. Also I learned that the neurons that transmit signals to our abdominal muscles to function correctly get weak and can contribute to the delay in gastric emptying too. All this can cause different mechanisms in our body to kick in and cause the pounding heart beat. My doctor said eventually the mechanisms will fix themselves but it can take up to 2 years. For now, the best thing to do is to eat smaller meals. He also told me to take Triphala, ancient Indian herbal medicine which was invented 2000 years ago so I got it and now using it after every meal. BTW, my doctor is also gluten intolerant and have had some of these symptoms as well ;)

  18. They're not the same. Gluten intolerance is a general term meaning that you have issues digesting gluten. Gluten intolerance can cause a number of issues and one of them is Celiac disease (autoimmune disorder). To name few more issues caused by gluten:

    -Irritable bowel syndrome

    -Inflammatory bowel diseases

    -Sjogren syndrome

-Sacroiliitis and inflammatory low back pain

    -Rheumatoid Arthritis

    -Dermatomyositis

    -Fibromyalgia

    -Diabetes type I

    -Thyroiditis

    -Osteoporosis

    -Pernicious anemia

    -Iron-deficient anemia

    -Peripheral neuropathy

    -Malabsorptpion causing vitamin deficiencies

  19. Hi Krishna,

I agree with everything the other poster said. Those sugar cravings hit me bad about 6 weeks in and it really worried me. I needed, not wanted, something chocolately every single day. I got me some hershey kisses and every day I would eat about 3 or 4 a day. That lasted about 6 to 8 weeks and then one morning I woke up and the craving weren"t there anymore.

So, find something you like and eat just a little bit everyday and soon you're body will say "ok, i've had enough".

    Just my opinion.

Thanks guys for the info, I really like this forum ;) I've also scheduled an appointment next week with my doc.. let's see what he has to say about my symptoms and will then keep you guys posted!!
