Any chance I can use this stuff in my new bread machine? He really bought a lot . . . Cara -
ARCHIVED Swapping Pamela's Baking Mix For Flour In Favorite Recipes
Cara in Boston posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This has probably been asked . . . My husband bought a TON of Pamela's Baking Mix on line and we can only eat so many pancakes (which is what I was using it for) Can I use it in my favorite cookie recipes as a substitute for wheat flour? What adjustments will I need to make? I assume I'll need to reduce the baking powder or soda since it is contained... -
ARCHIVED Next Step Help
Cara in Boston replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We have a tooth mystery here too. My older son (8) has had discolored teeth since his adult teeth came in - the color is streaky - not uniform. We have never heard from any doctor or dentist about why this might be ("teeth come in all colors . . ."). My youngest son (6)was diagnosed with celiac (blood and biopsy) in March and we all got tested. He had... -
We are traveling this summer and since 1/2 of us are gluten-free, we are just going to skip the fast food and bring meal with us. No problem packing for day one, but day two and the return trip are kind of tricky. I'm thinking about getting several of the meals from GoPicnic. They look pretty good and are shelf stable. I have not tried them yet. They...

ARCHIVED Best Bread Machine
Cara in Boston replied to Cara in Boston's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks - thats the one I ordered after reading the reviews on Amazon. I'm going to have to bake a lot of bread to balance the cost of purchasing this. Any other tools or gadgets that I might need? Bread slicer? Fantastic cookbook? Thanks - Cara -
Any favorite bread machines? My husband is tired of paying for gluten-free bread. I'm not much of a baker, so it needs to be easy. Thanks - Cara

ARCHIVED Ice Cream Truck
Cara in Boston posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I swear this truck is following us around! It is at every Little League game, every street corner, it is everywhere! I'd love to have an idea in advance of what treats are known to be safe so I don't have to make a big deal when we get up to the window. There is usually a line and my son (6) has a hard enough time making a decision in the first place... -
ARCHIVED Glutened, I Think
Cara in Boston replied to color-me-confused's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Flour particles can stay airborn for hours and eventually settle all around your kitchen. I know we have big crocks of spoons and spatulas on our counters - these would all be potentially contaminated. Just avoiding the flour spills you see may not be enough. We don't have a gluten free kitchen since only two of us require it but I no longer bake anything... -
ARCHIVED How To 'break The News'?
Cara in Boston replied to Annaatje's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I bought a "Zojirushi Classic Bento Vacuum Lunch Jar" on amazon and use it to pack a separate meal for my son and I (we each have one). It keeps things hot and cold and is very simple and compact. When we go to someone's house I usually explain how difficult it is to keep things gluten free and it is just easier and safer if I bring our food. I tell... -
We are having the same problem My 6 year old and I have recently been diagnosed and our extended family is going out of their way to make things for us at family events (which there are a lot of). I gave in at the first two events and both of us had symptoms. Since then I have insisted that it really isn't necessary but they still do it. So now I just...

ARCHIVED New Dx 2 Teens
Cara in Boston replied to maximoo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Both your kids have positive blood tests. It is likely that they have it. My son (6) had "unusual" results on his blood tests and no gut symptoms of celiac. He is a kid that requires about 4 adults to restrain him to take a blood test. I was unsure about the endoscopy but the doctor talked me into it. He had an endoscopy and it was positive - so I... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Testing In Relatives And Children
Cara in Boston replied to bincongo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son and I tested positive. He had ZERO gut symptoms (he was diagnosed first). I had lots of symptoms but never considered - or knew about - celiac disease until my son was diagnosed. I was told that ALL first degree relatives should be tested automatically, regardless of symptoms. My other son tested negative on all the blood tests but is going... -
ARCHIVED New Guy Here, Any Beginners Advice
Cara in Boston replied to dacoontz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't forget that your first degree relatives need to be tested (parents, sibs, children). I tested positive after my youngest son was diagnosed. I started with reading lots of books and food reviews. I hate wasting money and after tossing out two inedible Trader Joe's products (gluten-free rice tortillas and some kind of English muffin thing) I decided... -
ARCHIVED What Is The Point Of The Biopsy If You Have + Bloods
Cara in Boston replied to Meg123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From what I've read, a gluten challenge needs to be 3-6 months long. You could always make the appointment (18 months away) and stay gluten free until the months before you have it done. You may find that after a year of feeling great there is no real need for a biopsy. Then you simply cancel it. I had very positive blood results and a negative biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Help!
Cara in Boston replied to meme2kids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How old is she and which tests did she have? My son had weird test results (2 positive, 3 negative) so they did the genetic test and the more sensitive DGP tests - even then, one DGP was negative and one was positive. Everyone was puzzled. He had an endoscopy and it was positive for celiac. It can be hard to get a accurate blood test in children... -
ARCHIVED How To Proceed With Son
Cara in Boston replied to Blackbird's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Which tests did you have done? My son (6) tested negative on all the IgA tests, even though he has enough. It was his IgG tests that came back questionable. He had very few symptoms (most behavioral) so we weren't sure if we should move ahead with the biopsy. Turns out, his biopsy showed that he has celiac. If he had only been given the IgA tests, we... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Hangover
Cara in Boston replied to ruca55's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Very interesting thought. My symptoms started with the birth of my second child and he and I are the only ones in the family with celiac. Hmmmmm... -
ARCHIVED Your Takes On Diagnosis
Cara in Boston replied to heather Goble's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had a similar situation. After my son tested positive, I had the blood test done and it came back very positive. I went gluten-free (but only for about 2 weeks) before seeing the GI. He did more blood tests and endoscopy (said the short time gluten-free shouldn't make a difference). Everything came back negative. Went on gluten challenge (3 months... -
ARCHIVED Was Just Told To Start The Gluten Challenge
Cara in Boston replied to dice401's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Keep in mind that if gluten is your problem, you may feel worse before you feel better. My first two weeks without gluten were worse, but now I am gradually feeling much better. Don't give up. Cara -
ARCHIVED Getting Enough Fibre.
Cara in Boston replied to OntarioJoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I eat an avocado (sometimes half if I am eating too many calories) every day and a bag of popcorn. The avocado alone has 14g fiber in it. I also found (with the help of this list) a high fiber gluten-free cereal similar to All Bran. Perky's? Something like that? It tastes OK, not great. Can't remember the fiber, maybe 8 or 9 grams? Cara -
I am no expert on this and fairly new to the whole thing . . . It is my understanding that having the gene only means you may (someday) develop celiac disease. First degree relatives of anyone with celiac disease should get tested on a regular basis (every 2 years) or earlier if they show any symptoms. Since your boys are already showing symptoms, you...

ARCHIVED New Here
Cara in Boston replied to runningdoe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello and welcome. My 6 year old son was just diagnosed. I was just going to suggest that in the weeks leading up to the biopsy, use the time to try out some gluten-free items so that when the time comes to go gluten-free you will already have found alternatives you like for things like sandwich bread, pasta, and cereal. That way when she needs to... -
ARCHIVED Children's Hospital Of Boston Celiac Support Group
Cara in Boston posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 6 year old will be so excited to see the box that is addressed to him and full of all kinds of gluten free treats. (I had to open it earlier) It is a re-usable shopping bag full of cookies, chips, baking mixes, etc. as well as a coloring book and lots of information and coupons. I'm so impressed. He is going to be thrilled (and his older brother... -
I don't know if it is different for children, but my son (6) tested negative on all the IgA tests, but positive on the IgG (including TTG IgG, which maybe you didn't have?). He has adequate total IgA. I was the opposite. Negative on all IgG tests, but positive on the IgA. He had a positive biopsy, mine was negative. We are both gluten free now and...

ARCHIVED Rash Looking Thing Around Daughter's Mouth
Cara in Boston replied to kyga2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We developed the same rash (around mouth, more pronounced at corners, flakey and dry) near the end of my son's testing period (took several months to get all the tests done). He is prone to chapped lips, but this was very different and unlike chapped lips, did not go away with Aquaphor overnight. Once on the gluten-free diet it cleared up in about two...
