  1. I made these the other day and they were great! Half the mixture is finely chopped cabbage - you can't taste it at all. My picky-eater 9 year old ate two and my husband, who claims to hate cabbage, didn't even notice. The sauce was a bit sweet, so I reduced the amount of sugar - still very sweet. I will use our other recipe for the sauce next time, but...
  2. Forgot to add: I craved pineapple - ate a whole pineapple almost every day the first week. Read later that fresh pineapple helps with healing the gut? Not sure where I read that, but it makes sense. I also felt like I was sweating more - like going through detox or something. Hot showers with full body scrub seemed to make me feel better as well. Getting...
  3. My son is very sensitive, even to the smallest amounts of gluten. We got him some foldable placemats to bring to school in his lunchbox. (Snack-n-wrap? something like that) The school wipes down the tables in between classes, but I've watched them do it and I'm sure they are just spreading the crumbs around (the cloth they use can't be gluten-free after...
  4. Mine lasted about a week. Felt yucky (like the flu) and had a terrible headache for about 4 days. Gradually it got better and then it got great. Hang in there. Cara
  5. Also, if you can't get him to eat avocado, put it in a smoothie. Especially if it is not completely ripe, you can't taste it at all and it adds a nice, creamy texture. We do coconut milk too.
  6. Try making a batch of these. Taste like a treat, but actually pretty healthy. My boys (and gluten-eating husband) gobble them up: Energy Balls: 1 cup CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE oats (actually, we found that younger son doesn't tolerate even the gluten-free oats so we switched to QUINOA FLAKES) 1 cup natural peanut butter (we use Teddy) 1 cup coconut...
  7. My son and I were diagnosed with celiac disease (here in Boston) last March and my brother in Boise is just now getting around to being tested. His MD seems unsure of why he wants a test - he has some random, unexplained symptoms that may be related to gluten, but no "classic" symptoms. I know he should get the test regardless of symptoms, just because...
  8. Thanks for the response. Seems like the IgG tests are not always given but strangely, that is the only one that was positive for my son, who was later diagnosed with a biopsy and had considerable damage. All his IgA tests were perfectly normal. I worry that if my brother has a similar situation, he may never find out.
  9. My 6 year old had weird blood test results. Any test with IgA (even the newer sensitive ones) were all normal. His IgG tests were odd so we continued looking. One GI said he definitely did not have celiac. Another said lets keep looking (since she could not explain the weird IgG results). Sure enough, the biopsy showed extensive celiac damage and he...
  10. My son and I were diagnosed with celiac disease last March. I told all my siblings to get tested and my two brothers (go figure) still haven't found the time. Now my younger brother is having some weird symptoms that may or may not be related but I have talked him in to getting the blood tests. His doctor said she would give him the "pair" of tests (TTG...
  11. Thanks for the ideas so far. Here in Boston, most emergency situations would have some sort of warning (blizzard, hurricane) but there is always the occasional toxic leak (we are near a major highway) or gas leak where entire neighborhoods have been evacuated very quickly. Even a recent family emergency made it necessary for my two kids to go to their aunt...
  12. Thanks for all the replies so far. I like the GoPicnic kits but many of the sides in them are processed in a facility that also processes wheat. So they are gluten free (ingredients) but my sensitive kid steers clear of anything with that tag. I have managed to buy some of the components of the kits (like the hummus) and they have been great for snacks...
  13. With the help of this board and others, we finally have the whole gluten-free diet thing figured out and have been gluten-free for more than 6 months. In that time, we have become much more sensitive so even the smallest amount will make us sick. (Son is more sensitive than me.) My new concern is that there will some sort of emergency situation where we...
  14. My 6 year old loves taking things in a thermos so I make up batches of "lunch food" (gluten-free mac and cheese, beans and franks, leftover dinners, etc.) and freeze them in single serving sizes. In the morning, I just microwave them until hot and put them in the thermos. He also likes corn tortillas with refried beans and cheese (I melt it all together...
  15. I think it is clear you need further testing or at least a second opinion before you accept the diagnosis of MS. Your other symptoms do sound like Celiac, but I wouldn't dismiss the other findings. You could have both, as they are both autoimmune conditions and sometimes are found together. Over a 5 year period I was in and out of my doctor's office...
  16. We have trouble whenever we eat out. Lots of foods can start out gluten-free, but don't always stay that way due to cross contamination. I usually pack a few of those meals from GoPicnic for travel and emergencies. They are not perfect, but pretty satisfying and not super junky. Cara
  17. Do you see the Nutritionist at Children's? My son (6) was diagnosed there so we see their nutritionist twice a year. I don't recall her name, but she seemed to know what she was talking about. We usually meet in a group setting with one or two other families. I also have celiac disease and see a WONDERFUL nutritionist at BIDMC. Her name is Melinda Dennis...
  18. We been to a couple here and I have to admit, I actually got tears in my eyes to see how thrilled my 6 year old was to be able to pick out anything he wanted. It was so nice not to have to conduct a lengthy interview with the waitress. In Randolph, MA (15 minutes from Boston) is All Can Eat - a bakery that serves breakfast, and lunch and sells pre-made...
  19. Not sure which list to post this question on, but this one seems to get lots of traffic so I hope I get some good suggestions. We are traveling to Michigan next week with an overnight stop in Niagra. Two of us are gluten-free and really don't want to get sick at the start of our vacation. Any safe places to eat that you can recomment would be greatly...
  20. The probiotic I bought said "gluten free" in the on-line description. After a couple of days, I got suspicious and couldn't find the words "gluten free" on the bottle, or on the box, or on the company's web site so I contacted them. The person on the phone said it DID have gluten in it. The email response I got back from the company was that it starts...
  21. Since you have just been diagnosed, waiting until after the weekend to start the diet should be no big deal. However, if you've been gluten-free for a few days and are already feeling better, why suffer the consequences? We did something similar (destination wedding with reception later at home) and I'm pretty sure I didn't eat much at all at the party...
  22. What is the best place to order from? We are going to a family reunion in a few weeks and for the first time, my son and I need to be gluten free. I was planning on having some basics (bread, cereal, hamburger buns, pasta) sent ahead to our destination. We are staying with family but I don't want them to try and do any gluten-free shopping since my son...
  23. We joined the group organized by Children's Hospital in Boston. We've only been gluten-free for about 3 months so we haven't really become active but here are some examples of what ours does (maybe someone with more experience can expand on them): Each kid gets a "care package" in the mail welcoming them into the group. Ours was filled with all kinds...
  24. Both my sons (6 and 8) had one recently and honestly, they had a great time. Younger son went first, several months ago and when he got home, what he described made older son jealous. Turns out, months later, older son needed one too so he got his turn. They went to Children's Hospital and the staff was wonderful. They played video games until it was...
  25. I went gluten free after a positive blood test and immediately felt better. Then, I got an appointment for an endoscopy much sooner than I thought, so after about 14 days gluten-free I was told to start eating LOTS AND LOTS of gluten. I was so worried about having a reaction, it was actually hard to start eating it again. I already felt so much better...
