  1. Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to try some of them. I can't live this way anymore. Last night I didn't get any sleep because I was dizzy and nauseous and vomited all night. Vomiting was never one of my symptoms but apparently it is now. I wish I knew what I ate that made me sick. Is this sensitivity to crumbs (!) a lasting effect or does it...
  2. I know, all I do on here is vent. I don't know why I've been feeling so wretched and depressed. I keep reading stories of "oh how much better I feel now that I'm gluten free!" I'm ready for that to happen! I am STILL SICK three months into this. Everything I eat says it is gluten free so I guess it's the cc that's doing me in. Or something else? Who knows...
  3. Wow I keep finding more and more symptoms on this board that I didn't realize were connected to celiac. I have had anxiety/depression for years and now I think it was related to celiac. The stuttering/stumbling over words started about a year ago (when the digestive symptoms started). Weird. It seems like I end up talking too fast and stuttering when...
  4. I steer clear of these types of restaurants already since I'm vegan. No bacon and eggs for me. But my mom insisted on stopping at a diner on the way back from an excursion recently and I wouldn't have ordered anything at all except that I was hungry so I got hash browns. Mistake.
  5. Oh man this thread just made me realize our trip to the in-laws' this summer is going to be more complicated than usual. We (me, hubby, and two picky kids) are vegan and my MIL already cooks vegan food for us, which is so sweet of her. I can't expect her to now cook separate vegan gluten-free meals for me now too. I don't know what I'm going to do... I...
  6. OK, I hadn't heard that about being super sensitive in the beginning (I hope it will just be in the beginning). Good to know. And yes, Trader Joe's! A lot of their stuff says gluten free but then shared on equipment blah blah blah. Bummer because I love Trader Joe's! Grrr. I am definitely being "glutened" lately, I just don't know from what, probably multiple...
  7. Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'm going to take a closer look at what I'm eating/preparing. My kids are 2 and 4, hopefully they will not freak out if I switch out their precious Cheerios. I just thought of another possible culprit: Some of the labels on food I've been buying (for example, rice crackers) will say "no gluten ingredients" but that it...
  8. And I have to give up french fries now? Grr.
  9. Thanks, yes I already have cut out dairy. I've been a vegan for about 10 years. Usually when I get sick it's first thing in the morning when I get out of bed so it makes me think something I'm eating the day before. I'm constantly going over what I've eaten. I rack my brain thinking of anything it could be (could it be maltodextrin in the fake cream cheese...
  10. Cross contamination seems to be a real problem for a lot of people on this board. I guess I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue for me. My gastroenterologist actually told me it's OK to eat a little gluten once in a while, like if I go out to eat. Why would he say that? (Regardless, I have not taken his advice, and have only been eating gluten free --unless...
  11. I've been gluten free for two months after positive endo. I haven't been getting sick as bad as I was before, but for the last couple weeks I've been having, um, stomach problems. Every morning. Have I not been gluten free long enough? Am I being "glutened"? Or do I have some other non-celiac-related problem? I had restaurant french fries a couple...
  12. Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone! We packed a picnic today and went hiking up in the mountains, it was a beautiful day. Also I love "find new places to watch the sunset."
  13. I'm not sure why you are offended by my suggestion (which was meant for someone else anyway). I'm not insisting that anyone's animals go vegan, what are you talking about? And I don't believe PETA is against having pets either. I did not advise "contacting PETA" -- I suggested checking their bulletin board for action alerts which are news items that are...
  14. Thanks, Skylark. I hope it's not the soy, because I eat a lot of tofu! And I get B12 in the form of nutritional yeast, but I forget to use it. I need to start putting it in my smoothies more often. Thanks for the reminder! Jennifer, I didn't know about the xgfx, thanks for the tip! Kim, I have an idea for you. Since you feel guilty for going back...
  15. FYI: I know I said I still got sick on vacation. The restaurants I mentioned in my previous post are not the ones that I suspect of "glutening" me!
  16. Going back to eating meat/eggs/dairy might be the right decision for some people, but I no longer have any desire to eat these things. I just don't look at them as "food" anymore and I'm about as likely to order bacon and eggs as I am to take a bite of my shoe. I personally don't view vegetarianism as "putting the animals before myself." I'm not going...
  17. Just wanted to add that there's a vegetarian gluten free site called vegiac.com and you might also want to check out cookbooks by Dawn Grey.
  18. I've been a vegan for a long time but just diagnosed celiac a couple months ago. I'm still trying to figure it all out too. Here are some of the things I've been eating: *steamed rice with stir fry veggies and tofu *quinoa with peas & carrots and soy sauce. (Quinoa has a lot of protein. I use La Choy soy sauce, supposedly gluten free) *eggplant ...
  19. Anxiety and panic are hell as far as I'm concerned. I never had much success with medication. The only thing that really helped me are coping techniques I got from books, such as trying to calm yourself down when you're having a panic attack by telling yourself something along the lines of "I'm OK. This is just a panic attack. It can't hurt me. It will pass...
  20. Went to the beach for the weekend with my mom and sister who tried to be accommodating and agreed to go to a couple places with me that had vegan, gluten-free food but we ended up at a seafood restaurant at one point, where I could not eat ONE thing on the menu. I had water. And because I was so careful all weekend, I didn't get sick, right? Wrong. I still...
  21. I suspect I got celiac from my dad's side of the family (he's Irish), so I convinced him to ask his doc about getting the blood test. He said his doctor told him that if he isn't having symptoms that it doesn't matter if he has it or not. So he didn't test him for it. I was under the impression that even if you have no symptoms that it still damages your...
  22. Well it's official, the biopsy says celiac disease. I have to say it's true that it does seem more "real" to me now. So for those of you who convinced me I should get the endo so that I would be convinced I have it -- thank you, you were right. Anyone trying to decide whether to get a biopsy, my advice is to go ahead and do it. I dreaded the procedure...
  23. Don't know if you're still thinking about this but I thought I'd offer my two cents: I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years and a vegan for about 10 years. I was recently diagnosed celiac and even though I'm having a tough time with the gluten free diet so far, I will never (willingly) eat meat again. I am vegan for ethical reasons, but I've...
  24. I usually cook because I'm vegan (as are hubby and kids) so it's easier to make meals at home. We do eat out occasionally; there are a couple local restaurants that are vegan friendly -- our favorite is a Thai restaurant. I now feel like I can never eat out again. I went to a restaurant with my sister last weekend and was pleasantly surprised that they...
  25. Had my endo last week and have been gluten free since then. I know it takes a while to get back to normal but how long?? I'm so tired, even when I get enough sleep. And I find myself snapping at everyone and then feeling bad about it. It's difficult just to go about my normal day. I want to just lie down and do nothing. I hate this feeling. Anyone...
