ARCHIVED Anatomy Question On Gluten Intolerance
MitziG replied to Will29's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As you probably gathered by now, there is no definite answer yet, but theories abound. One that was written about in the book "healthier without wheat" made the most sense to me, so I will share it. When gluten protein is put in a petro dish with healthy tissue, the tissue suffers damage. Gluten itself is toxic to tissue. Now, if you have a healthy mucosal... -
ARCHIVED Researching And Trying To Connect The Dots
MitziG replied to Danny66's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think you have connected the dots. Get the testing done, then regardless of the results, try the diet. Gluten intolerance can be just as severe as Celiac, so don't let a negative dx discourage you. From those of us who have been in your shoes, we can honestly tell you your whole world is about to change for the better. -
ARCHIVED Questions About The Pill, Acne & Casein- Need Some Science!
MitziG posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
So, noticing that dairy, even teeny amounts, made my acne much worse, I gave up all casein about 6 mos ago. Helped dramatically. I also noted that if I cheated, I had the drugged, brain-foggy feeling that gluten gives me. Still didn't solve the whole acne issue, but improved it probably 75%. Last week, I decided to go back on the pill. The only pill which... -
ARCHIVED 99.9% Certain, Though Undiagnosed
MitziG replied to eternal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I really recommend you get tested before going gluten free. One, if it is celiac, your family members MUST be tested too. Two, if you have celiac, you must be 100% gluten free for the rest of your life. It is not an easy undertaking. Even though you may feel better gluten free, down the road you may question if gluten is really your problem. Reactions... -
ARCHIVED Not Been Diagnosed Or Tested, But Suspecting Celiac...
MitziG replied to Rielyn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, insist they do the tests. You are hiring THEM so no reason to let them call the shots. And be clear that you want the full panel done- print out the list of tests. Most docs only do 1 or 2 of the older, less specific, tests unless you insist. -
ARCHIVED Postive Blood Test, Negative Biopsy And Genetic
MitziG replied to NeedAVacation2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, and I might add, your GI is a moron. That all of her numbers dropped considerably after being gluten free CONFIRMS the celiac diagnosis, not negates it. Really, the ignorance of those who are supposed to specialize in these things confounds me! -
ARCHIVED Postive Blood Test, Negative Biopsy And Genetic
MitziG replied to NeedAVacation2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She definitely has celiac. She has 3 positive blood tests, 2 of which are specific JUST for celiac. Many doctors are not well educated about celiac- yours is one of them. The biopsy just missed the damaged areas, that is all. Very common. She needs to be 100% gluten free for life, and be very careful of cross contamination. The rest of you should be tested... -
ARCHIVED Whats The Deal With Cheese?
MitziG replied to MitziG's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Don't eat any colored cheese. I have been avoiding dairy because it makes me tired, achy and my face breaks out. The other day, I caved and had a milkshake...and I felt just fine. Yesterday I had a slice of provolone cheese and was broke out within hours. Hardly able to get off the couch today. Same thing happened when I tried a little bit of Feta on my... -
Trying to figure out why cheese seems to cause more of a reaction to me than other forms of dairy. Any thoughts?

ARCHIVED Scope Results
MitziG replied to Kelmac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In severe cases, damage may be visible with a scope, but it does take examination of the villi to say for sure. When the GI did my scope, damage was very visible. My daughters looked perfect though, yet her biopsy was positive for celiacs. In children especially, diagnosing celiac disease can be tricky. Regardless of the biopsy results, give the diet a strict... -
ARCHIVED Trying A Gluten Free Diet
MitziG replied to Rob-'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor may not be interested in testing you for celiac, but YOU need to be. You need to know if you have it. Sticking to a gluten-free diet for the rest of your life without ever cheating is not something to commit to without knowing you have to. If you have celiac, you HAVE to. Start eating gluten again, insist on a full celiac panel. If your tests... -
ARCHIVED Having Trouble Accepting The Diagnosis
MitziG replied to scarlet-willow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While Hashis could cause elevated ttg, the Gliadin test is specific for celiac, and yours is quite positive. You could be diagnosed on that alone. Combined with your endoscopy, there is no doubt you have it. As for not thinking you react to gluten...just give it time. I was un-dx celiac for 30 years and seemed to have no rhyme or reason to my reactions... -
ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Restaurants In Mn
MitziG replied to missnbagels's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Twigs in Rochester- the owner is a celiac and they have a dedicated gluten-free kitchen area. The food is awesome too! Cheeky Monkey in St Paul has some good gluten-free sandwiches..but the flourless chocolate torte is to die for! -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Questions
MitziG replied to kittty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It doesn't hurt to have the tests done, but you are most likely going to test negative after being gluten-free 4 months. Some people who had very high antibodies to begin with may still show a positive however. It took my son over a year of being 100% gluten-free before he tested negative. So it could show something...just don't count on it. And if it is... -
ARCHIVED Help With Test Results
MitziG replied to Solandra's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that you are most likely celiac. It is not unusual for blood tests to be negative, and the one you tested positive for is very specific for celiac. They should have tested EMA as well- probably too late to do it now though. Also, your doc should have ordered an endoscopy to confirm Celiac. It is tough to commit to a gluten-free diet for LIFE when... -
ARCHIVED I'm Terrified Of This Dx... :(
MitziG replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, also...in regards to what to eat NOW...check out Marks Daily Apple.com and his book The Primal Blueprint. Once you start eating primally, your insulin issues will likely cease to even exist! -
ARCHIVED I'm Terrified Of This Dx... :(
MitziG replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are a lucky lady, even tho it doesn't seem like it now. Your doctor actually thought to check for celiac (rare occurence) amd he found it! The biopsy is indisputable, even if the bloodwork doesn't show celiac as well. You are lucky because you are likely going to see your other symptoms decrease or completely disappear on a gluten free diet! Insulin... -
ARCHIVED Triglycerides
MitziG replied to Finally-45's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, very low triglycerides, in the absence of a super low-carb diet, is a sign that you are still not absorbing well. A year after dx, my triglycerides were 42. I was a huge carb/ sugar eater so this was a misleading sign of good health. I discovered I was casein intolerant as well and suspect that was causing continued malabsorption. Been casein free for... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease?
MitziG replied to gottarun96's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is important to know if you have celiac disease. You may be gluten sensitive instead, meaning gluten makes you sick, but you do not have the auto-immune process of celiac disease going on. If you go gluten free, and feel better, you will stick with the diet awhile. But it is a very hard diet. Eventually, you will cheat. If you have celiac, you can not... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know About Orthodontic Molds?
MitziG replied to MitziG's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, he is supposed to be checking. But its been 3 days and haven't heard back from him. He is the only orthodontist within a 50 mile radius, and I waited 2 months for the appt. -
ARCHIVED I Need To Change The Way I Feel About Food....
MitziG replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, I will check that out. Haven't heard of it before. Oh, GFinDC....clueless whiners are also middle aged women...so they probably won't come hang with her at school. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know About Orthodontic Molds?
MitziG posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My son has to get a retainer and they need to make a mold first. The dr had no clue what the mold material was made from, other than he thought maybe algae? Anybody know what it is? Or what it is actually called? Googling "orthodontic mold material" didn't get me anywhere! -
ARCHIVED Depressed Cause I Can't Eat Anything
MitziG replied to Sage122's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry- it is hard! Since you have an anaphalactic reaction now, you should not take a chance on products that are processed alongside wheat. Too easy for a little bit to sneak in there. Anaphalaxis tends to increase in severity with repeated exposures- please be sure to carry an Epi Pen at all times! Pizza is doable...but it is going to have to be... -
ARCHIVED I Need To Change The Way I Feel About Food....
MitziG replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah..there is a celiac support group here...but they are a bunch of clueless whiners who make me want to bang my head in frustration. Not my cup o tea. I suspect either food intolerance or fructose problem for her. Getting the latter checked next week, if nothing then getting referred to Celiac specialty clinic at Iowa City. -
ARCHIVED Seriously, Will It Ever Get Better?
MitziG replied to kam43's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Please understand..."scrapping the diet" is not an option. If you return to eating gluten, you will become very ill and likely develop lymphoma. Your life depends on this being a permanent change. That said, I know it must be very frustrating to feel worse now. I got huge relief after my dx and going gluten-free, but my daughter is more like you. A year...
