  1. Someday! I've wanted chickens for years but we were renting and then there were a few years after we bought this house that my husband was living and working 2 hours away and we weren't sure if we were still going to be here long term. As soon as his long-awaited transfer came through and we knew we were going to be living here permanently we ordered our...
  2. My son insists he is going to train him to focus his energy enough to shoot lasers from his eyes.
  3. Yup, 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes. They are 9 days old today and already escaping from the bin we have them in. Oh dear. Chicken Killer is a good dog name. We had a rabbit named Stew who got eaten by a cougar but my Dad always threatened to have Rabbit Stew for dinner one night.
  4. Don't you ever eat in the car? I can see my husband eating a burger while driving and then me sitting in the same seat the next day driving and eating a bag of rice chips. For a very sensitive individual this is totally plausible. I'm not quite that sensitive but not far off.
  5. They get played with a lot ... maybe even too much. They do have names. Our 5 year old named one Chickie, our two older girls named one Fifi, I named one Bennie (mmmmm... eggs bennie) and our 15 year old son named one Killbot. Teenage boys are so weird.
  6. So I have a big family. Myself, my husband, our 3 kids plus our two Vietnamese girls who are living with us for several years while they study in Canada. (Plus 4 chicks who currently live in a rubbermaid tub in the upstairs kitchen). Right now I am discovering that I am quite sensitive to even small amounts of cross contamination. I grabbed the wrong peanut...
  7. So now we have 11 mouths to feed in our house. With some love and care though these little girls will be feeding us eggs next year. I can't wait! For now the kids are all thrilled to have 4 chickens living in the kitchen. I have to admit they are cute. The lady at the farm supply store looked at me like I was a crazy person when I asked if there was gluten...
  8. Between gluten free food for myself, the fact that myself and both of our sons are allergic to food dyes and petroleum-based preservatives, I can't tolerate perfumes and being in Canada couponing is pretty much out of the question. We buy almost no processed food and I'm very picky about our toiletries and household cleaning products. We don't get coupons...
  9. I don't have a blood test or a biopsy. I went gluten free for a few weeks to see how I felt and there was such a drastic and sudden change in my health that people I barely knew were stopping me to comment on how amazing I looked. My husband and I thought maybe it would be good to start eating gluten again so I could have the test. I had one small serving...
  10. I'm sorry you were treated that way. He was wrong. I have a celiac friend who was very overweight and lost 60 pounds when she went gluten free. I am thin but not super skinny and lost 10 pounds randomly in the first week I was gluten free. I think fixing your diet will allow you to have the body you are supposed to have. If you're overweight perhaps you...
  11. I think it's possible. I won't cook the kids gluten food because I don't want to expose myself to crumbs. It can take as little as one crumb to get sick so it's just not worth the exposure. You could have accidentally wiped crumbs and/or flour on your clothes and then had it contaminate your food that way. Or inhaled aerated gluten from the cleaning. I...
  12. Honey garlic Drumsticks with VH Honey Garlic sauce, brown rice and salad. I might make a pot of lentil soup as well as a side dish and/or tomorrow's lunch.
  13. Here's the recipe: 1 cup white rice flour 1 cup sorghum flour 1/4 cup potato starch 1 tsp xanthan gum 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 3/4 cup vegetable shortening 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla 2 cups chocolate chips combine dry ingredients with a whisk and set aside In...
  14. Here they are. I'm so happy. We had a playdate and everyone (kids and adults) loved them. I'll post the recipe later if anyone would like it.
  15. After several frustrating baking disasters I made really good chocolate chip cookies! Yay me! Even with my brain not working and my whole body aching from a glutening yesterday I still managed to produce delicious cookies. (Can you tell I'm very excited?) I love to bake so every baking success is cause for celebration and the failures are very frustrating...
  16. Which kind do you drink? Last week I had the Caramel and was fine but this week I bought the Italian Roast and it's been bothering me.
  17. Interesting! I wonder if we are both reacting to some contamination in the Via packets. Maybe I'll try a double double from the Tim Horton's across the street tomorrow and see how that affects me.
  18. Hi, I'm Sara. I'm in Nanaimo. I'm not formally diagnosed but have been gluten free for 4 weeks now and am feeling great. The couple little slip ups and the horrible results have convinced me not to make myself ill for official testing.
  19. I only drink the Starbucks Via sticks though so I think I'll try some other coffee in case there is some contamination in the Via.
  20. Yup. I cut out coffee at the same time as gluten and have since found that it doesn't agree with me. Stomach cramps, slight muscle ache and headache within the hour. I just drink tea now. I do miss my coffee though.
  21. I just got a very sincere apology. I told him I almost fainted at sharing time in our middle son's classroom this morning. (I take our chickens in once a week so the kids can see them growing from chicks to egg layers). He feels awful but was just sincerely hoping I was wrong about the gluten. He knows how hard this past month has been for me and was...
  22. I've been texting him all day detailing how bad I feel. "Wow. still feel like crap" "Man, do I feel awful" "I have a KILLER headache" "Back hurts sooooo much" I figure just because he gets to go to work doesn't mean he gets to escape my complaining. And we will have a talk tonight about the whole issue. He just wants...
  23. I wonder about that too. I did replace my wooden spoons because they are cheap but I'm sure someone in the house will use them for gluten foods eventually. I simply cannot afford to replace my pots, not going to happen. I also wonder if all non-stick pots are equally bad. Ours are non-stick but not Teflon and I keep reading how Teflon is bad.
  24. So my dear sweet husband who is usually the most supportive of men talked me into eating gluten yesterday as a bit of an experiment. I'm not formally diagnosed but I have been gluten free for 28 days now and I feel amazing. Better than amazing! So I ate a mini danish. What. The. Hell. I'm coming up on 24 hours now. My back still hurts, I...
  25. They also have the most amazing Nanaimo Bars. The service is slow and it's definitely not a great place to take little kids but it was nice to go out for a sandwich and a treat and not have to ask a million questions.
