ARCHIVED Can't Afford To... Can't Afford Not To
Poppi replied to Poppi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm home with a nice 12 piece set of stainless steel pots from Costco. Kirkland Brand but they meet all the requirements I had: thick, multi layer bottoms (in this case steel, aluminum and copper), rivetted handles, at least 10 pieces and under $250 ($189.99). I also got a cast iron pan. If this makes a difference then I'll add on a few extra pieces... -
So I'm heading out today to buy new pots. I've been gluten free for almost 6 weeks now and I felt amazing for the first 4 weeks but the last 2 I've been slowly sliding backwards with my symptoms. My husband and I think it might just be my system becoming more sensitive so now I'm reacting to the trace contamination from our 10 year old non-stick pots. ...

ARCHIVED I Just Need To Whine A Little Bit
Poppi replied to Poppi's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, we can reschedule but I don't want to. I want to go on Monday. I'll get over it though, I'm just disappointed because it's been almost a year since we got away from the kids for a night. Something bad always happens. We went away for 2 nights last August for my birthday and I came down with Meningitis and spent 2 weeks in the hospital and another month... -
I'm sick today and I ate McCain potato patties last night as well!! I've been trying to figure out what got me all day and that is the only likely culprit.

Can you wear a mask and wash your hands often? -
We have been waiting for this weekend for ages. Our anniversary was last month and we are finally getting to celebrate with a spa day and a fancy meal out on Monday. I talked to the chef at the spa restaurant who seems to understand the gluten issue and promised to provide me a wonderful and safe meal, we have overnight childcare for the kids and I can't...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Poppi replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You have to share it with 6 other people though. 3 of them have to be teenagers and one of them has to be a man who just got home from a 2 hour workout. I think I got 3 pieces. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

Sadly nothing is quick for 7 people. Breakfast for dinner seems to actually take longer than most because it takes forever to cook that many pancakes. 2 pounds of bacon, 21 pancakes, 18 eggs, 1/2 a pound of cheese, 1/2 a pound of mushrooms, 3 large potatoes and 2 peppers. Add in a liter of milk and 2 liters of juice as well. At least there should be enough... -

Tonight is breakfast for dinner night. So I'll make a fritatta with potatoes, mushrooms, peppers and Jarlsburg cheese, a couple pounds of bacon and some gluten free pancakes. -

I roasted a turkey last night so tonight will be leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and salad. I think I will make myself a homemade corn tortilla and put some turkey, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and mango salsa on it. I had that for lunch today and it was good enough to repeat for dinner. -
ARCHIVED I Have To Show Off My New Friends

Aww, poor baby. We had to let one of our chicks cry it out for the night when they were about 4 days old because she would cry and chirp as loud as she could whenever she couldn't see a human. So they went into the laundry room for the night and everyone got earplugs. It took her a few hours to calm down but it forced her to bond with her flock and she's... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By A Gluten Free Marshmallow?
Poppi replied to Poppi's topic in Super Sensitive People
Yup. I think it's also putting things into perspective. Gluten-free for life doesn't necessarily mean pain-free for life. Other things cause pain and discomfort and not everything has an identifiable cause. -
ARCHIVED Coffee Causing Gluten Like Symptoms
Poppi replied to GlutenGladi8or's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So after about a week with no coffee I made a Caramel Via when my sister in law came by this afternoon. Half way through the cup the headache and muscle aches started. Still not sure if it's the Via or coffee in general but I think I'll be going back to my Rooibos tea from now on. -
ARCHIVED Glutened By A Gluten Free Marshmallow?
Poppi replied to Poppi's topic in Super Sensitive People
I wish I still had the bag so I could look at the ingredients but it definitely didn't have a "may contain..." or "manufactured in the same facility..." statement. I don't buy those items. I'll have to double check but I think those statements are law in Canada or at least they will be law by 2012 and some manufacturers are phasing them in already. Although... -
K8ling I can sympathize. During my last pregnancy I was so sick. I threw up for the first time the day before I took my pregnancy test (3 weeks 5 days) and for the last time an hour before my daughter was born. Inbetween I threw up 1-12 times a day, every single day. I was on Diclectin, Gravol, Zofran and Benadryl. I had a serious allergic reaction to...

Huh. Learn something new every day. I guess I should have been more specific and just said it was something I hadn't reacted to in the past. -
ARCHIVED Glutened By A Gluten Free Marshmallow?
Poppi replied to Poppi's topic in Super Sensitive People
I didn't have the bag anymore and even went to the store to see if they still had some of the candy around but they didn't and they couldn't tell me the company because the only description I had was "the marshmallow eggs in the brown bag"... not very descriptive. My scones actually had corn flour in them so I don't think it was corn and I make myself... -
So when I was shopping for the kids easter candy I bought Reese’s mini cups, Icy Squares, chocolate coins (the foil wrapped kind) and a bag of chocolate covered marshmallow eggs that said “gluten free” on the bag. So we did our candy hunt and I had some of the kids chocolate (it all read clean on the ingredients) and I felt awful. Definitely glutened. I fi...

ARCHIVED I Have To Show Off My New Friends

He'd probably love it here. We live within a few hours of great skiing/snowboarding, the best surfing in the world and we are surrounded by really nice beaches and other outdoorsy type stuff like mountain biking, scuba diving, camping, rock climbing etc etc We've already got 5 kids, I'm sure we can cram another one in downstairs without hardly noticing... -

Don't forget the ocean. I'm on an island. It's a fairly big island I suppose but we are still only a 5 minute drive or a 25 minute walk from the beach. -

Where are you? I'm on Vancouver Island so you're probably not next door. We have a decent size city lot but thanks to city bylaws we are allowed 4 laying hens and a large vegetable garden. I'm only putting in 50 square feet of garden space this year but if it goes well I hope to double that for next year. Once our oldest 3 leave home we are hoping to... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else React To Skittles?
Poppi replied to Newtoitall's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I react to skittles because of the food colouring but aside from that they made me feel gross because of the sheer vast amount of sugar entering my blood stream all at once. -
I love you. I'm not sure what the selection is like in the States but up here in Canada my surefire safe (for me that means gluten and artificial colour free) fallbacks are Cadbury Fruit and Nut, Cocoa Camino Dark Chocolate with Orange and the gigantic Lindt Dark Chocolate bars you can get at the grocery store for $6. I always have at least one of those...

I want one! Yup, anyone want to come to Canada this summer? -
I read that you can put it through the self clean cycle and then reseason it and it will be fine. If you don't have a self clean cycle then perhaps the hottest your oven goes for an hour or two? Not positive there.
