ARCHIVED Autoimmune Disease Comorbidities
DonnaMM replied to gkygrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes absolutely celiac runs with autoimmune diseases, but the fact is that once you have one autoimmune disease you are at risk for many others. Celiac in particular has a strong association with hashimotos and type 1 diabetes, I believe possibly lupus as well. -

ARCHIVED Best Bread And Pasta
DonnaMM posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have decided to go back on the diet regardless of my test results. Last time I did it I could never really get into the bread or pasta. Any ideas as to the best bread and pasta? I don't care if I have to order it I just want a soft bread and good pasta noodles (I LOOOOVE SPAGHETTI). Anyone tried the quinoa pasta, is it good? -
ARCHIVED This Is Getting Old, How Long Did It Take For Your Diagnosis
DonnaMM replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for all your opinions. I have done the diet before when I was having a lot of stomach pain and diarrhea. I went off and had no problems except for extreme constipation, but that appears to be when my iron deficiency hit. I work as a nurse and one of the doctors that took care if me when I was hospitalized twice for dizziness, blurred vision, palpitations... -

My doctor didn't want to order a gastric emptying study but I insisted I am about ready to say screw it all and test out the diet again and see if my iron levels improve. -

Finally got my EGD results from about two weeks ago, this was to reassess for celiac disease and iron deficiency. They said the biopsies came back ok but showed small bowel inflammation which because of iron problem is quite suscipous for Celia disease and I need the blood work again. I have had this test done about four times, it keeps coming back normal... -

DonnaMM posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Anxious and excited for my second EGD, the last one was kinda inconcuslive and ready for a second look. Time to find out if my blood lost, malabsorption and abdominal pain is an ulcer or celiac disease Wish me luck! -
ARCHIVED Saw The Gi Yesterday About The Iron Deficiency
DonnaMM replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have thrombocytosis (high platelets) and have an autoimmune clotting condition in which I clot too well. I had a whole blood workup down in the hospital, the only thing they didn't was an EGD cause they figured do it outpatient cause the pathology for biopsies takes awhile ya know -

So I saw my doctor and pretty much gave him a quick run through of my health history for the past year. It was a pretty disappointing appointment. He pretty much said ok so last time we did the EGD you were gluten free for a few months before and kept on it. I told him I had been back on gluten for about 9 months now he said great lets do an EGD and small... -
ARCHIVED Do Gi Docs To Med School?
DonnaMM replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's interesting you comment on the immune system, because since treatment I have developed thyroid issues, clotting problems and inappropriate sinus tachycardia, all believed to be either auto immune or an autonomic dysfunction. I get another EGD soon and I am curious what it will show. Even if the biopsies are negative again if the damage is worse I am... -
ARCHIVED Do Gi Docs To Med School?
DonnaMM replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have not been officially diagnosed yet, my primary and OB/GYB and the hospital doctor think I have it but because my labs and biopsies were normal although after the test the GI said your intestines look like that if a celiac patient. I do believe my cancer was my "trigger" of whatever is going on with my stomach because I had no problems before and now... -

Rosetapper, Why did you have chemo? I am interested that you resolved with chemo. Because all my medical problems started after I did chemo. I even had one doctor tell me that the blunting was from my chemo, I was like ummmm what??? You obviously have no answer -

I was told after my biopsy last year my biopsies were negative and told to eat gluten I went a few months gluten free then brought it back and have had no problems. Also I am only iron deficient not b12 or folate. I have now presenting a year later with severe iron deficiency my HGB was almost nine normal is 12-15 depending on gender -

Ok so I wrote earlier about my severe iron defienciency I was having and my need for a GI workup based on advice from the doctor at the hospital. I have not gone to the GI doctor yet but work as a nurse and saw a doctor that works with my GI doctor. I was talking to him and telling him about my previous EGD results (villous atrophy in duodenum and jejunum... -
ARCHIVED Impatient And Still Frustrated
DonnaMM replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right now they say Iron pills are pointless because its all malabsorption. So I get to sit and wait until my hematologist orders me more IV iron. They said it could take months to build up my stores because I pretty much have none -
ARCHIVED Impatient
DonnaMM replied to AmberRS's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know why you are doubting the diagnosis, if your mother has it and the blood showed positive then take it and run. You are one of the lucky ones that actually has a doctor that appears to be willing to give you to accurate diagnosis. The blood test has a 95%-99% sensitivity and specificity. I wish I could only be so lucky and finally get an answer... -

I wrote early about being in the hospital and finding about my anemia. Has anyone else had such a problem with iron deficiency? I got IV iron when I was in the hospital cause they say I was absorbing it anyway. How long did it take you to start feeling better. I am still so dizzy and tired. I want to go back on the gluten free diet because I have started... -
ARCHIVED Recently In Hospital And Still Confused
DonnaMM replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Findin my way.... My clotting condition is lupus anticoagulant which gives me hypercoagulablity. Unfortunately mine with not go away like ITP sometimes does. I also talked with a doctor friend that said iron is absorbed in the duodenum which is were my blunted villi was found. Maybe I should just accept it since every other doctor I have seen thinks that... -

I am aware of the correlation with celiac and lymphoma but it was 7 years ago and my GI troubles didn't start until about a year after treatment. I believe mine was hereditary because my cousin had Hodgkin's lymphoma as well. I am just said cause I feel so socially isolated on this diet but I know I am at risk because I have a autoimmune thyroid condition... -

So I have had GI problems for years and it used to be almost uncontrollable diarrhea like 20 times a day I went through celiac testing multiple times. Three blood tests and a EGD showed blunting but negative biopsies, the doctor said I could just have gastritis. Went on the diet anyway and saw improvement then added gluten back and I have had no problems... -
ARCHIVED Black Pepper The Silent Ingredient
DonnaMM replied to Cinnamon7778's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am confused why you got upset when you asked if their are any other ingredient you should be concerned about and they said no. How would they possibly know you were sensitive to black pepper if you didn't tell them. If I cooked for you and it had black pepper in it an you blamed the food for your reaction I would be upset as well. I guess I just don't understand... -
As relieved as I was to figure out what was wrong with my stomach. I absolutely hate this condition. It makes me realize life really is not fair! I hate that a crumb has me running to the bathroom, it does not seem natural. I hope all this people without food allergies or intolerances understand how lucky they are. Just needed to vent thanks!
