ARCHIVED The Politics Of Gluten
westiepaws replied to sarah513's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh gosh, just reading a few of these posts, I am wanting to stand up and say, "YES, YES, YES!!!" Two additional groups that also are in the same position are caregivers, particularly younger ones, and people with pancreatic cancer. I submit that none of this is about politics at all. It is about MONEY. If you have MONEY, you can buy advertising and influence... -

ARCHIVED Top Three Worst Gf Products
westiepaws replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't remember brand names, but I have had NO success in the arenas of gluten-free/soy-free/dairy-free *pasta *cookies. I also tried to make some pancakes, and man, they were horrible. Given these experiences and the fact that I have multiple allergies, I have given up trying to replace wheat-based products, pretty much. Instead I am eating... -
Thanks everyone, this helps a lot. For the first time in my life I actually think I'll be meeting the 7.5 percent requirement b/cause of all the testing to diagnose me this year. !!

Hi Everybody, I think I read somewhere at celiac.com or at the message boards that we can take the extra cost of purchasing allergy-free foods, etc., off our income tax. I'm avoiding gluten, casien and soy so that was very exciting news to me ! However, I met with my accountant yesterday; she looked up the rule on this; and she said it applies only...

ARCHIVED My Diet Is Not Like Most Of Yours
westiepaws replied to coin-op's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, that "piggy" description is so funny! That is me discovering those berry "Envirokids" rice bars at Whole Foods! Thanks for the mold link -- my mom is allergic to almost everything on the planet and I think that link might help her. Also, re: brussels sprouts, I never liked them *until* a friend fixed them halved and sauteed with lots of fresh... -

Hi LisaRD88, don't despair --- you may very well *not* have multiple allergies. You could very well only have gluten intolerance and it's just messed your intestines up so that everything you eat makes you feel ill. Also know that if you do find out you have more than one sensitivity, you will learn how to handle it; you can do it!!! At first it is... -
ARCHIVED Attended Chicago Gfg Mtg.
westiepaws replied to westiepaws's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mel, last night I read about three issues of a magazine called Living Without -- have you heard of it? It had so much helpful info., and there was an article on MOLD allergies! It and it mentioned foods to be careful about if you are allergic to mold. (I've not been tested for mold allergies, but was constantly sick off for six mos. after some major mold... -

Mel, P.S. -- try to rotate foods if you can (I know that is SO hard with multi-allergies, believe me!). Somewhere I learned (and I can't remember the source, I apologize) that eating a food day in and day out can lead one's body to develop allergies to it. That's why the dieticians tell us to eat a variety of foods. And by the way, I am a total BAD... -

Hi Mel! Yes, I am allergic to dairy, soy and gluten. My mom is allergic to those plus corn and sulfates. The person who has helped me (and my mom) most is the nutritionist we see. She is really well-versed on where in food bad things are hidden. Mom and I have not had any kind of food allergy testing, because our endocrinologist is wary of false positives... -

celiac3270, if anything, a private school should be more willing to let you go, *I* think. When you write out whatever you submit making this request, work in something about how as a private school you know they have extremely high standards and want their students to excel and live healthy lives -- not just in the classroom, but outside, as well. -
ARCHIVED Have You Noticed Food Label Ingredients Changing?
westiepaws posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
....boy, I sure have. I have run across some foods that, based on their food labels, were safe to eat. But more and more I am going back to buy some things and finding that their labels now mention soy lecithin, or wheat-related products that they used to not list. (I'm also allergic to milk, in addition to soy and gluten -- and generally have found that... -

celiac3270, I am certain I saw you -- I went to at least one of the forums and there was a younger guy there, and I remember being surprised and impressed that he was! Particularly because this person, most likely you, did NOT seem to be there at the behest of a parent. Very cool! Yes, the scheduling should be such that students can attend! And teachers... -
I'm with Katie on the vaccine question. It probably did my brother and I a lot of good, I suppose. But I have a friend whose mother did not let him be vaccinated, and he's a-okay and actually, a total hunk! Gorgeous! Fit! Healthy! I also know a perfectly healthy fellow my age who ended up in a wheelchair permanently paralyzed and mentally compromised as...

No physician should reaquire his/her patient to undergo any process or procedure that he/she has not experienced personally. I mean, hey -- how many of these M.D.s ever pooped into a paint can, much less gave chemo or radiation a whirl, or get regular colonoscopies, etc., themselves?! westiepaws -
ARCHIVED Don't Lick Envelopes, Use A Sponge!
westiepaws posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi All, just a quick reminder to everyone -- moisten envelopes w/a sponge, do not lick them. I totally forgot and licked a whole bunch of them while I was doing some job-related mailings 1 1/2 weeks ago. My innards have recovered. However, today I got an itchy rash on my neck, arms, shoulders, upper back, elbows and hands while driving in my car. My face... -

How cool! I worried about that, too, would it all be too basic, but WOW, it sure wasn't at all. Everyone was so nice, too! I had red hair and black-framed glasses, but in a celiac crowd that doesn't help much, as there are so many redheads in the group! -
Hi, I just checked back with Moe's and they are still working on this -- it'll be several months. We just have to hang on! westiepaws, former Moe's devotee

Hi Everybody, I went to my first Gluten Intolerance Group meeting in Chicago this past weekend. It was GREAT. If you haven't been, it's very helpful to a) learn more about celiac and taking care of yourself, and meet other people w/the same challenges you have. I also attended the physician's update portion since I am studying to be a nutritionist...

...I *KNEW* this and forgot and now am paying for it with ultra-serious fatigue. Remember to avoid licking envelopes; the glue often has gluten in it. Use those peel-n-stick envelopes or moisten them with a sponge to seal.

You also might be allergic to soy -- many people with gluten problems are sensitive to it. Check the ingredient list. Also, you might have problems with corn -- my mom does. westiepaws

The best chocolate chips I have EVER eaten, pre- or post-celiac are called Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips They are also soy-free and dairy-free (I have multiple food allergies -- it was hard for me to say goodbye to cheesecake and chocolate eclairs). I am a newbie and have only ordered them through the online Gluten-Free Mall. You might be able to order...

ARCHIVED Gf, Soy- And Dairy-free Ketchup?
westiepaws posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi All, I thought I could live w/out ketchup after finding out I needed to avoid gluten/soy/dairy. But then I realized ketchup is a primo ingredient in making cocktail sauce for boiled shrimp, one of my favorite summertime foods!!!! I have not been able to find any gluten/soy/dairy-free ketchup or cocktail sauce at my local store or online at the... -

Clinique is good about helping you figure out what is gluten-free and what isn't. If I did my homework correctly, their city base spf 15 (or is it 25?) compact foundation is gluten-free (I use I think the shade called "fair" and their touch-base for eyes (I use "canvas"). Clinique has a soft pencil eyeliner that on the other end has some glittery powder in...
