  1. This idea is form a Dutch coeliac forum that I also visit. It's guaranteed to bring a smile to your face anytime. Right, let me start off. I'm happy today because it's Sinterklaas, a traditional Dutch holiday. When I arrived at work today Sinterklaas was at the factory gates, together with a lot of Pieten. Every worker got a present, it was a wind...
  2. December the 5th, holiday of Sinterklaas. Sweets, cookies, chocolate and presents. Cooking hachee for dinner tonight because we have guests.

  3. Hachee Hachee (ha-shay) is a dish from stewed beef, traditionally accompanied by cooked potatoes and cooked red cabbage or applesauce. The hachee is used to bring flavour to potatoes, much like gravy would. Only this gravy contains beef so soft it nearly falls apart in your mouth. Open Original Shared Link Serves 4-6 Ingredients: 1 kg of beef...
  4. Thank you I'm just proud of my heritage and I'd like to show people how to cook tasty things from scratch. The Dutch kitchen is full of simple and cheap ingredients. Nice to hear that your grandparents came from here. You've got a heritage to be proud of Have you ever visited the Netherlands? If you plan to do so, give me a sign. Quark is similar...
  5. Hachee (spiced stewed beef) with cooked potatoes and beet salad or sprouts on the side. We have friends over for dinner tonight, they are always so picky about vegetables. Their mother never prepared anything fresh, literally everything was from cans and boxes and often way overcooked. I'm on a mission to show them the taste of freshly-cooked things. So far...
  6. Thanks! My boyfriend will adore this, he loves everything that has cheese or cream in it
  7. Fresh products are best. Also, try to make good use of sales and your freezer. We buy in large quantities when things are on sale and we freeze things. It's also economical to cook large quantities of, for example, pasta-sauce. Make it at home with fresh vegetables, mincemeat, tomato concentratie, herbs and garlic. Easy and cheap. Dinner leftovers can also...
  8. Kerststol Christmas bread with dried fruits, nuts and a center of almond paste. Delicious with a good butter or you can spread the almond paste across the slice. Here's a pic: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand:Kerststol_met_amandelspijs.webp And here's the recipe (from Dutch celiac forum) Dried fruits: 50 gr raisins 50 gr currents Shot glass...
  9. At Christmas mornings we usually have a big breakfast table. Typical dishes are: Bake-off breadrolls with luxury cold cuts, luxury marmalade or special cheeses. Kaisersemmel with thin slices of roast beef for instance, or white rolls with strawberry marmalade. Kerststol: Christmas bread filled with dried fruits, nuts and a center of almond paste. ...
  10. Best wishes! *Hugs* Keep on fighting!
  11. Most likely the test will be positive, those are tell-tale symptoms. If he test is negative, you still may benefit from a gluten-free diet. 1% of all people has celiac disease, but there's another estimated 6% with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Welcome to the club anyway Your health will only improve from now!
  12. I've never cooked Rendang before, it's a beef stew, right? I'll try and find a good recipe
  13. This is very bad service Have you reported this to the restaurant owner? You're a customer and "the customer is king" as we say here.
  14. Kruidnoten Kruidnoten (Kröit-noh-tun). Dutch favourites for the childrens' holiday of Sinterklaas on december the 5th. Sinterklaas usually arrives by steamboat in the middle of november, welcomed by hundreds of little children. His assistants, the Pieten, will throw sweets and kruidnoten into the crowd. In the weeks before december the 5th, you will find ...
  15. I'm cooking babi ketjap tonight: crispy pork in a sticky-sweet sauce. A side dish is nasi: baked rice with leek, onions, scrambled egg and diced ham. Oh, and I'm also going to bake kruidnoten Sinterklaas is tomorrow, and you can't have that without kruidnoten. Those are very small spiced cookies: http://www.de-chef.nl/foto/1036863854.webp I'll put the...
  16. Always after Sinterklaas has left the country It's a traditional Dutch childrens' holiday on december the 5th. Even though our family doesn't celebrate it we don't want to mix up Christmas and Sinterklaas. Some Dutch find it quite offensive to put a tree up before the Sint has left.
  17. Lamb chops with steamed carrots and baked potatoes.
  18. There are some bodybuilders who use a gluten-free diet as a contest preparation. They claim that going gluten-free drains excess liquids from their body and makes the muscles more visible. This is not comparable to our situations however, because these people have often dieted for years and are as lean as can be. Still, if you make the right choices a...
  19. Ah, lucky for you then I even have to double-check gluten-free products to check for "gluten-free" wheat starch and maltodextrin. Our Celiac Association NCV has received many complaints from people about gluten-free foods. Many people still have reactions to them/
  20. I've thought the same: my antibody test was negative and my biopsy wasn't reliable enough to rule out celiac disease. However, I have strong reactions to gluten and my health quickly improved when I went gluten-free. My GI told me that we might never know and that I should just stick to the gluten-free diet. Interesting fact about the history of the discovery...
  21. Well, we've heard all about it at school but I never found it really interesting until lately. At school it was all about remembering years and names, while I was more interested in the way society was influenced. There's a lot of discussion going on about Dutch culture lately, because some people feel that immigrants are doing damage to that culture. In...
  22. Just wondering: maybe you're super-sensitive? There's maltodextrin in it, which should be safe for most celiacs because it's under the 20 ppm limit. However, some people are super-sensitive and can still react to it. Maltodextrin is a flavouring agent which is made from hydrolised starch. If made from wheat starch it can cause problems with a very small percentage...
  23. It's so true In my student days tried to gain some muscle for improved metabolism, but the results were meager to say the least. After diagnosis and treatment I picked up weightlifting again and I'm getting in shape really quickly now. Before I suffered from dizzyness and lack of energy during training, that's nearly gone now. It's also easier to stick to...
  24. Very interesting article, thank you It's indeed weird to think that some people treat a gluten-free diet as the latest fad diet. Some celebs go gluten-free because they think it will help them retain their weight. Odd... For myself I'd have to say that before I got diagnosed, I constantly over-ate. I was hungry all the time, no matter how much...
  25. My family history on fathers' side has been researched by a cousin I didn't know I had. I was researching our genealogy and then I found her. Her grandfather was a brother to mine. As far as I know our family name will end shortly. My grandfather had 2 sons and 2 daughters, my dad got 2 daughters and my uncle is gay so no kids there. On my grandfathers...
