  1. Thank you everyone for this helpful information! My 6 year old daughter was just given a "probable" diagnosis last month and we're waiting for the GI appointment next week, but I'm strategizing in the meantime. She is also an incredibly picky eater, and does not eat any naturally gluten-free foods except yogurt, brown rice, and about 6 fruits and raw...
  2. I tested Annie's microwaveable rice mac & cheese on myself last night (the kids were at a birthday party). I figured if it was revolting, at least I'd know not to try that one on her. I'm pleased to report that it was no better and no worse than regular microwaveable mac & cheese. :-) It tasted almost exactly the same -- probably because all the flavor...
  3. This idea hadn't occurred to me till I read this thread, but if we did decide to do it, it would be for this reason. My daughter (6) is shy and also sometimes hard to understand (language skills are great but her articulation is poor). Even though I think people are likely to believe her if she says she has an allergy, it might help to have something she...
  4. It sounds like a fun week, but it is amazing how they managed to have something involving food (or poop) on EVERY day except Friday. Of all those things, the worms on Friday would worry me the least! This sentence especially made me laugh:
  5. DH and I have actually been eating a lot fewer carbs already, because (before the diagnosis) we were both trying to lose a little weight. So we were moving more towards lean meat & veggies. Unfortunately the carbs we do eat are not very likely to be whole grain (except the bread and brown rice) -- it's stuff like Cheerios, regular pasta, egg noodles,...
  6. Sorry, me again... I swear I'm trying not to be a pest! I know everyone has a different opinion on whether to take the whole family gluten-free. My feeling at the moment is that we probably won't (unless of course it turns out that Sarah isn't the only celiac in the family). But I can also imagine that, as I'm trying to cook one meal for the whole family...
  7. Good suggestions, thanks! I didn't mean I was going to keep her eating gluten any longer than necessary (though she does need to stay on it till the endoscopy). By "change her diet" I just meant I don't expect her to immediately start eating meat, fish, veggies, and all the other things she currently won't touch.
  8. Alas, no peanut butter either. Her only source of protein (besides dairy products) is cubed tofu -- but only mixed with peanut noodles. She actually only eats one brand/type of just about all those things (i.e., Annie's mac & cheese, Mission flour tortillas, peanut noodles have to be a certain shape, etc.). I think she understands that the new versions...
  9. My 6 year old daughter, who was just diagnosed celiac, eats almost exclusively: grilled cheese cheese quesadillas plain pasta plain egg noodles mac & cheese She also eats brown rice, yogurt, fruit, and a few raw veggies. She doesn't eat any meat, fish, nuts, or eggs (not allergic -- just doesn't like them), and she only eats cheese in the form...
  10. Thank you Cara, very helpful! I'll definitely check out the placemats -- and we had been meaning to buy her some special containers, so it's good to have a recommendation. I hope there is another child with celiac in the school. It's a big school (500 kids), so given the statistics, it seems like there should be.... This is also an area where, I would...
  11. zapsmom, there is a ton of info here about how to deal with the school: Open Original Shared Link (There are also pages you can print out and give to the principal, teachers, nurse, etc.) It completely overwhelmed me, which is really why I posted -- I'm wondering if it's necessary to go to that extent. But, on the other hand, if you're feeling like the...
  12. My 6-year-old daughter just had a positive blood test for celiac (she has the genes and the antibodies). We haven't scheduled the biopsy yet but want to do it as soon as possible. In the meantime I'm trying to figure everything out. For those of you who have kids in elementary school, what kind of accommodations did you need to ask the school to make?...
  13. My daughter was just diagnosed at age 6. I just found out this morning and we haven't made any diet changes yet, but for what it's worth: - no severe GI symptoms (almost no vomiting/diarrhea), but has a tendency to constipation and complains frequently of tummyaches - extremely picky eater (eats essentially ONLY wheat products and fruit) - small for her...
  14. Thank you for this. I just got the results of my 6yo daughter's blood test (sky-high antibodies) a few hours ago and I'm still reeling. mamaupupup, my girls are twins too. They're fraternal. Our other DD has no symptoms whatsoever (nor do DH and I) but we're all going to get tested just in case. Just curious what your experience was?
