ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Sensitivity

The total serum IgA is a different test than the antigliadin IgA. The total serum IgA is a test to check that you are producing normal amounts of IgA. If someone is IgA deficient the Celiac tests (which are checking for IgA antibodies) are not going to be reliable...and IgG antibodies need to be checked instead. Eating gluten light shouldnt affect... -
They do use sulfites in some flours...as a "whitening" agent....also most starches contain sulfites (corn starch, potato starch, etc.). They dont have to be listed as an ingredient on the product....but can be found in many different ingredients. Corn syrup, lemon juice, white grape juice, etc). Its my understanding that most processed foods contain...

Alot of coconut products are preserved with sulfites....even if not clearly labeled. Its not uncommon to be sensitive to sulfites. If you have the same reactions to fresh coconut (right out of the shell) then its not a sulfite issue. If you tolerate the fresh stuff.....then sulfites are a possibility.

Having the elevated IgG antigliadin antibodies does indicate a gluten intolerance...in my opinion there is no reason to look furthur into that with Enterolab. As far as determining whether or not she may have Celiac you could check to see if she carries either one of the main genes. Even though the genetic testing isnt diagnostic by itself.....it can be helpful... -

Andrea, I looked her up online tonite (dont know why I waited so long to do that ). She has a website so I was able to learn alot about her from that. I also found a thread about her on some message board....it was all positive. She was chronically ill herself and recovered after being treated by a M.D. who specialized in the alternative stuff... -

I'm assuming they are referring to IgA deficiency....which can result in negative serology in people who have Celiac Disease. This is why the total serum IgA is included in the Celiac panel. Did you have this test? The total serum IgA is an important test and should not be left out when being tested for Celiac Disease. -

What was in the results that prompted him to come to this conclusion? Does this mean that she did have elevated antigliadin antibodies but nothing positive with regards to the tests that are more specific for Celiac?? If there were elevated antigliadin antibodies.....then I would see no reason to pay for the Enterolab stool test....its not going... -

Alot of good advice has been given already. I had a similar experience during the first 2 years of my illness. Lots of emotional instability, daily crying, rages, severe depression, major brainfog, etc. Everything was totally out of character for me and I was positive that there was something wrong with my body.....something physical....which was having... -

I got nothing medical or scientific to talk about today. I think my brain is on vacation from it right now....I'm just waiting for the 22nd to get here so that I can finally meet this new voodoo lady and find out if she's really worth all this waiting and anticipation. She better not disappoint!! Hopefully I'm still scheduled and they... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Sensitivity
Rachel--24 replied to happygirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think gene testing can be helpful since approx. 97% of diagnosed Celiacs carry either DQ2 or DQ8. There's a very small percentage who test positive for Celiac without having either of these genes though. However, its less likely to be Celiac without having either of the main genes. -

The gluten free diet is the same for both conditions...they are both equally strict. No gluten. I wouldnt say that damage is less. Damage can still be severe....although, the autoimmune attack to the intestines would not be occuring as it does in Celiac. Anything that puts alot of stress on the immune system can ultimately cause alot of harm... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Sensitivity
Rachel--24 replied to happygirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree with this all of this. It doesnt matter with regards to gluten because anyone who is sensitive should be avoiding it....regardless of whether or not they test positive for Celiac. However, since "gluten sensitivity" is a different condition....there may be other factors (besides gluten) playing a role. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Sensitivity
Rachel--24 replied to happygirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I dont think that any tests are perfect 100% of the time. Some people will test negative for different reasons (biopsies missed damage, not enough samples taken, IgA definciency, etc.) and yet still have Celiac Disease. However, I think that the majority of people testing negative.....test negative because they truelly do not have Celiac Disease. Celiac... -

Andrea, Just wanted to let you know I havent forgotten about the SCD book. I have to make a trip to the post office when I'm done with my urine test. Its gotta go through the post office....all the way to France. I plan on shipping the book at the same time. I had to wait for my monthly visitor to go away so that I can finally take this... -

I do think its encouraging that there is some interest in learning more about the differences between Celiac and Gluten Sensitivity. I hope this is something that they will continue to research. I'm not convinced at this point that gluten is the "root" cause in most cases of gluten sensitivity. I think its often a symptom of other issues that are going... -

YAY...thats good news Kassandra. I was getting worried....it sounded real scary! It sounds like it! Well....I'm sure you'll get your diet sorted out and hopefully things will improve. With all the different issues going on its very likely that other things are contributing to the malabsorption. I still have malabsorption issues.... -

How do you know what your birthday color is?? My favorite color is green. Its also my traditional birthstone (emerald). Is the birthday color something different? There is just something about pink! I think I might be onto something. So I started wearing pink again yesterday. Its been a whole year but I bravely put the pink back on and headed for work. I was looking exactly like I look everday....except for the pink shirt. There's a customer who comes in about 3 times a week....with VERY strong... -

Andrea, Sounds like you had a good time. It also sounds like you now need some rest after having such a busy weekend. I would love to have a manicure/pedicure again!! Yes, definately the gut components play a big role. I dont believe that they are seperate issues......but more likely its all occurring because the body is out of balance. If methylation is impaired I dont think its possible to maintain a healthy environment in the gut. A mercury burden will also have a negative impact on the gut flora. Lots of things have... -

April, Thanks for the info. on Iodine. I'm glad this is one of the things Dr. P. is looking into. He's holding off on the labtest right now because he's not sure how I'll respond to the iodine tablet.....but iodine deficiency is one of the things on his list for the voodoo lady to look at. I think theres a real good chance that I need iodine...
