  1. Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. A person's worth shouldn't be based on his or her job. If more based their self esteem on their actions toward others, things would be much better. I also think I have more worth to others than I do to myself, so maybe I need to change my outlook.
  2. I always wondered about the legitimacy of leaky gut syndrome, but recently I've been questioning a lot of things that are commonly believed and disbelieved and have found new answers. I have found evidence of leaky gut syndrome to be demonstrated in many scientific studies. It has been associated with alcoholism, autism, liver damage, NSAIDs (as already...
  3. Yes, I'm in a similar situation. I've been unable to work for several years and want to work desperately. I am extremely driven and desire to work hard, so this is very difficult for me. I am the so-called "achiever" type. It has especially affected my self esteem. I'm not sure of the best way to cope, but it helps to acknowledge that you are sick and...
  4. They won't cause any harm gluten-wise, but if you have amalgam fillings, metal braces can lead to more mercury emissions in your mouth. Mercury can cause complications in people who are susceptible to autoimmune diseases. A non-metal kind of braces like Invisalign should be fine. If you don't have these kind of fillings, there shouldn't be any problems...
  5. Open Original Shared Link "The word sprue derives from the Dutch spruw, which means mouth blisters. These were described as an important sign of the illness by the Dutch physician Vincent Ketelaer in 1669, almost three centuries before gluten's role was suspected."
  6. Height isn't necessarily an indicator that everything is fine. When I was 11, I grew a ton in a year (went from a size 1 shoe to a size 7) and was the second tallest child in my class (and played basketball for many years as the starting center, usually the tallest player on the team). But I did this by devouring large amounts of food--an entire pizza plus...
  7. I only eat one thing at PF Chang's, Chang's Spicy Chicken, because it has never made me sick. There are other places that have gluten-free menus, but I don't know if they contain dairy or not, so I can't risk it. I've been recontaminated too many times to count (taking two-and-a-half weeks to recover each time) and not because I cheated. It was because...
  8. It can be caused by anemia or inflammation elsewhere in the body. Did she have a biopsy and if so, was it recently? I could provide more information based on this.
  9. I wasn't given any suggestions in this area by a doctor either. Sometimes, I have so much trouble with vomiting that I will vomit all day long and can't keep down medicine or fluids. I can't lose anymore weight, and I need to take my medication, so in those times, I would like to be able to take something to help prevent further vomiting. I used Emetrol...
  10. I had a boyfriend who had celiac disease before I was diagnosed. We were so close and so similar that it had a detrimental effect on our relationship. We would bring each other down all of the time. If we were going to be together ultimately, I felt like I would be the one having to do everything when I was so exhausted myself. Toward the end of our relationship...
  11. Where do you buy them? I can't seem to find any Hillshire Farm products here.
  12. Does anyone know of an anti-emetic that does not contain gluten or dairy? I also need to avoid phenylalanine. Is Dramamine safe? I just found out that Bonine contains dairy... Cola syrup or anything like it is too weak.
  13. Kathy: Those were excellent links--I bookmarked them all (I actually love eMedicine). Thanks for the doctor recommendation and for providing me with all of their information! In this state, it seems like all the best medical help is in Englewood. It's pretty close to me, and I actually have family there, so I wouldn't have any trouble getting there. It...
  14. Rachel: My comments last night were not the greatest. I was so out of it from not sleeping in awhile. I should have gathered from your previous post that you were no longer having trouble with hyperthyroidism. The point I made that is applicable is that gluten sensitivity is a legitimate condition and that gluten should be avoided just as in celiac disease...
  15. Whoops, Lab Tests Online has a lot of good information, but I meant to refer to Health Tests Direct, where you can order tests: Open Original Shared Link. Sorry about the misinformation.
  16. This is not easy news to take, but hopefully this will help a lot of your problems. Your malabsorption rates seem very high. Mine was only 628 units. It's possible that your hyperthyroidism could have contributed to the fat in the stool. Gluten sensitivity might seem like a "lesser" diagnosis, but those with gluten sensitivity should also avoid gluten...
  17. One of the main genes for celiac disease, HLA-DQ2, is highly associated with diabetes. If you find you don't have high blood sugar or low insulin, it could be diabetes insipidus, a condition with a much different cause than the common diabetes. I have similar symptoms but have never been tested: Open Original Shared Link.
  18. I found out more information while researching the topic. Three of these abstracts demonstrate improvement in thyroid function while on the diet. Leave it to the Italians to come up with this study (I think they have excellent celiac disease research). The main point of interest in this abstract is that subclinical hypothyroidism was normalized in...
  19. Kathy: No, I have never had neuropsychological testing. In fact, I've never even heard of that term until now. I studied neuroscience in school and even went to medical school until my health got bad enough that I had to leave, so it does sound like something I would find interesting. I never learned about memory problems there, so you are right about...
  20. It is worthwhile to try to get testosterone again. I've always had long, painful, and heavy periods and killer PMS, so I don't know why I've never gone to a gynecologist. I guess I've thought I have bigger problems that needed to be addressed, but low testosterone definitely contributes to the fatigue. Ironically, people have claimed that I have high testosterone...
  21. I've had insomnia since kindergarten. When I was a child, I would go to bed with 12 hours in which to sleep, then I would try all kinds of weird techniques to sleep, such as getting in uncomfortable positions, flipping my pillow onto the other side because it was cooler that way, or lying on the opposite end of the bed. For some reason, they would sometimes...
  22. Nini: Do you know what your TSH was? A lot of doctors won't treat hypothyroidism if it is between 3-6, even though a healthy person has a TSH of 1 or 2. There may not be severe symptoms between 3-6, but it can still cause fatigue, low body temperature, and brain fog. But I wonder if taking enough thyroid hormone may actually be harmful in the long run...
  23. I've been having a similar problem. I've wanted my vitamin and mineral levels to be tested for quite some time, but since I haven't found anyone who will perform the tests for me, I've been leaving my body in a horrible state where I am avoiding taking any vitamins because I don't want to mess up the tests. So, I continue to get worse. Before I was diagnosed...
  24. My husband is definitely the way you describe. He feels best if he can constantly help me or fix my life somehow. The arrangement is working out for both of us. Also, he doesn't have any problems doing any traditional female-type activities to help me out, such as buying me feminine products or doing housework.
  25. It sounds like you've had a much harder time than me. I had a head injury as a child (a concussion and fractured skull), but I wasn't in a coma. I just lost consciousness until they had finished cleaning me up at the hospital. I also had a seizure after my fall (I was ejected off of my bike headfirst, and a mother of a friend drove by and saw me when it...
