  1. anyway, going to break 4,000 steps today. in related news, planned “big” walk to the corner and back is being postponed for a week.

  2. he has the basics down, but, you know, details and all that. still, feel i must encourage his kitchen efforts.

  3. I am one who avoids processed foods as much as possible (but I am also one who cooks as much as possible), so 85% or so of my shopping is done at my local store. I focus a lot on meats, fresh veggies, that sort of thing. I hit Costco for what I consider my bulk items, including rice. For certain kinds of gluten-free foods, like a loaf of bread or pasta, I...
  4. it really is easier than it seems! How to Make Real-Deal Thai Food at Home http://t.co/XmjRKevYPk

  5. neighbors getting sunday mail delivery. i like to think i pioneered that service in our neighborhood. also, it’s still sorta weird.

  6. husband, continuing his awesomeness while i’m injured, is making omelets tonight. once he figures out how.

  7. Having just ordered PF Changs for delivery, I am so sorry to hear this happened. Our local restaurant has been great for me, and I love that I can it delivered. I'm pleased that they handled the customer service side of things so promptly and graciously. It makes me feel good about a restaurant when I know they really do care about their customers.
  8. My favorite fast dish is fried rice: leftover steamed rice (cold, and at least a day old), leftover meats, frozen or fresh veggies, soy sauce, fish sauce, and lots of heat. Fifteen minutes, start to finish if you count pouring yourself a glass of wine. Tacos are also great quick meals. I'm a huge proponent of cooking batches of foods and freezing them. You...
  9. due to wonky work VPN, am doing all the work on my phone. while i am amazed by modern technology and all that, am also dismayed a bit.

  10. planning to crawl into bed early because my body is thinking 4:30 a.m. is the new 7 a.m. it is not. trust me on this.

  11. A couple of questions: when you say the damage revealed by your upper GI looks bad, what does that mean? If you don't have a celiac diagnosis, what are they looking at? Also, why are you taking medication for lupus? Do you have lupus or is your doctor trying to address a problem? It may be a combination of problems causing you difficulties. It sounds...
  12. First off, an endoscopy is not a big deal. You may feel some discomfort after, but it will generally be mild. Second, it's hard to say for sure if you have celiac, but your symptoms and the fact you felt better after being off gluten for a period of time suggest, at the very least, you have some level of intolerance. Because my biopsy was negative, I was...
  13. leading to this: is it lowest of low to text or DM husband so he can bring me magazines? pretty sure i’d fall over if i tried to grab them.

  14. also (not whining), but i have my first fitbit friend. it’s my younger sister. now we can get our competition on!

  15. note to self: tomorrow you must get up and go to the office. people will ask you questions. also, remember to wear real shoes, not slippers.

  16. happy new year to all! (and to all good night)

  17. something that has fascinated me for a while. The Shelf-Life of Gluten-Free Bread: http://t.co/hYYjJVXu4n

  18. Butter and oil should be fine, unless you're using something weird (you probably aren't). You absolutely *can* season meats -- I prefer just salt and pepper when it comes to red meats, but most seasonings are fine. Just read the labels to make sure there aren't any additional ingredients, particularly if you're using seasoning blends. Rice and potatoes are...
  19. Well (and she's swallowing her jealousy a bit!), how many calories are you taking in versus how many calories are you burning? Are you healthy otherwise? As cyclinglady notes, are there other issues in addition to celiac? Are you working actively to build muscle mass? And, are you the type who is naturally lean? Finally, have you talked to your doctor about...
  20. This is my gastroentologist's belief as well. When we were reviewing my (overall) inconclusive tests -- blood yes, endoscopy no -- he indicated he felt celiac and NCGI are parts of the same issue. Of course, he also explained to me before my endoscopy that there are limits to that test as well. The camera can only go so far. I'm curious to see how the medical...
  21. One more suggestion: LYFE Kitchens. They have a fairly robust gluten-free menu, and I believe one just opened in the Valley.
  22. There are quite a few choices in the area. PF Chang's has a good gluten-free menu. The Yardhouse's gluten-free menu is pretty varied; you just need to order carefully. Roy's has a good gluten-free menu (it's helpful if you specify when making your reservation). Sushi Roku has recently introduced a gluten-free menu (and it's great!). BJ's does an okay gluten...
  23. If it's your brother, you (or your mom) can politely mention what's going on in your life. It may take some time before they get it, but now is a good time to start the conversation. Granted (and boy, do we all know this!), their understanding of gluten-free will be a bit, um, confused. If it's hard for us, imagine how hard it is for those who don't live...
  24. So, yes. i do feel like I need to cook more, but that is mostly because I get a bit fatigued by the menu dance at new restaurants. But I love cooking so this works for me. When we go out for "normal" meals, we go to trusted restaurants and I order from a very limited menu. Or, I know what's safe at these places, and don't try to get too adventurous. That...
  25. I promise you it will be delicious. When you think about it, most of the Thanksgiving meal is easily gluten-free. Yes, there is stuffing/dressing and rolls, but just about everything else (including gravy) can be gluten-free without making any sacrifice in flavor. Though I'd advise avoiding pre-brined/basted turkeys. One of my book club friends made a great...
