ARCHIVED Question About Genetic Testing
blmoreschi replied to blmoreschi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not to be really dumb here, but I'm not sure all that dialogue above actually answered my question. If I have DQ2 and DQ8 (and no celiac) and my celiac daughter has DQ2, do we still need to have my husband tested or would she have gotten the DQ2 (she only has one copy) from me? I'm just not sure how the genetics work. -
ARCHIVED Question About Genetic Testing
blmoreschi posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 11 year old was diagnosed in April. The rest of us (my husband, 13 year old daughter and me) were immediately tested for tTG etc and all came back normal. My husband and daughter (who is definitely his mini me) had numbers in the 0 and 1 range. Mine were in the 6 to 13 range. In an effort to avoid testing everyone every 3 years if they don't even have... -
ARCHIVED How Long Till He Starts To Feel Better? (Anemia Goes Away, Etc.)
blmoreschi replied to lynnedays's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It sounds like you're doing a great job! My daughter (11) also had mild anemia, osteoporosis and slow growth. It's been 6-1/2 months since she was diagnosed, and her tTG went from 99 down to 6, her anemia is gone, and she grew 1-1/2 inches and gained 7 pounds! She also has so much more energy and we saw that difference within the first month. I've definitely... -
We have and are certainly doing our research on bisphosphonates. All of her levels of the other vitamins and minerals you mentioned are normal. Doing our research and getting a second opinion about the bisphosphonates is what finally got us to the celiac diagnosis (she had no GI symptoms). It is why we also gave her bone density 6 months gluten-free to see...

Lorisue, So glad to hear that Megan is getting more energy! We just got our results this afternoon, so I'm eager to share. The good news is that her TtG went from 99 to 6. It doesn't get much better than that! I've heard that it doesn't always go down that fast after going gluten-free, and I had psyched myself into hoping for at least a 50. So, needless...

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
blmoreschi replied to niese's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just made these, and they are completely delicious!! I can't wait to get the good mom accolades when my daughters (one Celiac, one not) get home from school this afternoon. YUMMY! I used Jules Gluten Free Flour Blend because I happened to have it after getting it on a great deal with Groupon. I typically make my own blend using Jules' recipe from the... -
ARCHIVED The Kindness Of Others...
blmoreschi replied to ryo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I tried to be funny/polite about it. In my e-mail about it, I said "unless your oven racks are a lot cleaner than mine, please cook the pizza on a foil covered pan". I asked my daughter the next day, and she didn't think she used foil. I know that other moms would follow my instructions to the letter, but I'm not surprised that this mom thought she knew better... -
ARCHIVED The Kindness Of Others...
blmoreschi replied to ryo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I also have this problem with my daughter (11) who was just diagnosed in April. Her friends and their parents have been fantastic in terms of going overboard to provide gluten-free treats for her. And then it is SO awkward to bring up possible CC issues. They are just trying to be nice! Recently she was doing a sleepover with a friend and I called the mom... -
I think we're going with the 6 month DEXA check because of the looming pre-pubertal growth spurt issue. Actually, the recommendation to start bisphosphonate treatment is what sent us to Johns Hopkins. UVA was convinced she had Osteogenesis Imperfecta and talked us into the $3000 DNA test. The head of peds endocrinology kept insisting that we needed to do...

Lorisue- You don't know how excited I was to hear of another osteoporosis-only case. Sorry that they're both going through it, but it's so good to hear that you found a reason relatively quickly. And I notice that's thanks to a dietician, not a doctor. We have z-scores (pediatric) for my daughter and hers were -3.4 spine and -2.8 hips. The DEXA was repeated...

Yes!! My eleven year old daughter was diagnosed in April, and osteoporosis was the reason. By age ten, she had fractured her arms 6 times (4 upper humerus, 2 wrist). I still don't understand why her blood calcium and vitamin D levels have always been normal when her body was obviously not getting the calcium to her bones. That's a question I intend to really...

ARCHIVED Kids Vitamins
blmoreschi replied to nmlove's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would check on Vitacost.com. My daughter had a specific need - she needs 1000 mg of calcium per day but she also needs a multivitamin. All of the chewable calcium supplements on store shelves contain a lot of Vit D, and between that and the D in the multi-vitamin she was getting too much. I went to the Vitacost website and was able to search by criteria... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Camp For Kids! (Texas)
blmoreschi replied to New Community Member's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter went to Camp Weakaneatit in June and had a blast. And it was such a relief to not worry about what she was eating all week (for both of us). I highly recommend this camp or any that you can make it to - we drove from Virginia to Georgia and it looks like this will be an annual trip! -
ARCHIVED Well...it's Official.
blmoreschi replied to mommy2krj's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good luck - we're about to mark 3 months since diagnosis and I vividly remember how you're feeling. Overwhelmed mostly! But 3 months in it certainly is less overwhelming and I've even gotten immune to the cost aspect. Once I started thinking of it as a medical necessity I didn't mind spending the money. Also, you won't have to make THAT many changes at home... -
We just returned from retrieving our daughter from Camp Weekaneatit, which is sponsored by the Georgia Celiac Foundation in Warm Springs, GA. It was a fantastic week, and my daughter's only regret is that it didn't last longer. I know a lot of parents on this forum have younger kids, but please keep Celiac Camp in mind for when they get older. It is such...

ARCHIVED Sleepovers?
blmoreschi replied to Denine's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had the same thought about the virus. We are new to this also - my 11 year old was just diagnosed in April. She has been to two sleepovers since then, and it has worked well both times. Mainly because I trusted the moms. And both times she took a big bag of Angie's kettle corn with her, because all of her friends love that and she likes to share. And... -
ARCHIVED Family Gone Gluten Free - Husband Gets Sick From gluten-free Food!
blmoreschi replied to blmoreschi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Should we eliminate corn, or just the xantham gum? He's never shown any sensitivity to food before, and Xantham gum is really the only new ingredient in his diet. Thanks for the response - I also just found another source online that listed bloating, cramping and diarrhea as the symptoms of xantham gum sensitivity - i think that must be the problem. -
This may sound crazy, but my husband seems to be getting episodic diarrhea since we have gone (mostly) gluten free in our house. Our 11 year old was diagnosed 2 months ago, and the rest of the house is gluten free except for some leftover boxes of cereal (and we're really careful with the crumbs/dust from that). My husband, older daughter and I all eat gluten...

I thought i would add to this topic rather than starting a new one - all of the old Aruba posts were very helpful to us in planning our trip. Our 11 year old was diagnosed 7 weeks before our trip, and I was slightly panicky about the whole thing - but we had a great experience! We stayed in a condo so took a lot of food with us - cereal, pasta, crackers,...

ARCHIVED Is This A Gluten Reaction?
blmoreschi replied to blmoreschi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yeah, we had even taken our own hot dogs, but I was talked into letting her eat the hot dogs that were already cooked. I went against my best instincts because I was getting the eye rolls. Big lesson learned for me. All of her blood levels are fine, but we do major calcium and Vit D supplements because of her osteoporosis. We started that before her... -
ARCHIVED Is This A Gluten Reaction?
blmoreschi replied to blmoreschi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Interesting. Thanks. I think I've decided that is what it must be, because she isn't a "throw up" kid - she's only had a stomach bug maybe 3 times and hasn't thrown up in years. She didn't have that look either - you know the one I mean where they look nauseous even after they throw up. It was like she got rid of the hot dog and then all was well. Well... -
ARCHIVED Is This A Gluten Reaction?
blmoreschi posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 11 year old, who was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and has been gluten-free since, is not well tonight. She never had GI issues, so we don't really know what we're looking for in a gluten reaction. For the first time since diagnosis, we went to our regular Thursday church dinner. It was a cookout tonight, and I was assurred that the grill had been sanitized... -
ARCHIVED Disney Thinks Bullying A Gluten-Free Kid Is Funny
blmoreschi replied to carisima's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 11 year old (6 weeks post diagnosis) and (former) Jessie fan just watched the offensive episode on YouTube yesterday. We were not only offended by the picking on him for his allergy, but by the stereotyping that was done. The allergy kid was the biggest nerd with no social skills ever depicted on Disney. My daughter immediately e-mailed Disney and told... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Buy From Costco, Sams?
blmoreschi replied to Christine0125's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, that's what I was thinking but it's nice to have someone agree with me! Her favorite snack was always Wheat Thins dipped with either hummus or homemade pimiento cheese. I agree - we need to try something different. I bought Glutino bagel chips last week, and she actually ate some of those and said "they aren't too bad". In the meantime, I'm putting... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Buy From Costco, Sams?
blmoreschi replied to Christine0125's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've read all through this thread and several older Costco threads, but if my question has already been answered and I just missed it please accept my apologies in advance! We are now 5 weeks post-diagnosis for my 11 year old daughter, and the gluten-free diet is going well. We still have a pantry full of gluten-free processed foods because we had to...
