  1. I'm also considering waiting for a few years for improved testing. I was quite encouraged by that report of the 3-day gluten challenge!
  2. The new book by Dr. Fasano is very good: Gluten Freedom.
  3. Thanks so much for your thoughtful response. I will consider your input carefully. I love your idea of a car kit! That seems so much more practical than trying to carry snacks in my purse.
  4. I just had my first visit with a GI yesterday, and she said exactly what I expected: unless I do a gluten challenge, I will not have a clear celiac diagnosis. My question: is a challenge worth it? I know the answer is different for everyone; I could use a little help figuring out if it's best for me. Background: started eating mostly paleo 5 years ago for...
  5. Maybe she meant the brownies were made with nut flour? There are a million recipes out there for grain-free brownies made with almond flour. A co-worker brought shortbread cookies to work a while ago which everyone was raving about. She said the secret was that they were made with corn flour. I was feeling sorry for myself since everyone was going on and...
  6. My biopsy results were exactly the same as yours, and my bloodwork was all normal - this was after a year of being gluten free. I was shocked that anything would show up! I went gluten free a year ago after learning I have HLA-Dq 2.5 and HLA-Dq 8. I don't expect to be able to get an accurate diagnosis at this point, but I sure would like to know what's making...
  7. Thanks for all the responses! One clarification: my biopsy did not show villus atrophy, just intraepithelial lymphocytes. BlessedMommy, I would say I have 3 out of the 5 criteria for diagnosis: symptoms (but they are vague and could be blamed on many things), genes, and (mildly) positive biopsy. Resolution of symptoms can't be tested since I've already...
  8. Hello! I apologize in advance for a long post. Some background: I started eating a mostly Paleo diet 5 years ago, for general health reasons. I would cheat and eat wheat on special occasions about once a month, with little ill effect. One year ago, I did the 23andme genetic testing, which to my surprise, showed I carried 2 genes putting me at high risk...
  9. 23andme testing is $99. It takes a lot of figuring out, but I was able to determine that I carry both HLA-Dq2.5 and HLA-Dq8.
  10. Oops! Thanks for catching my mistake. I edited my post.
  11. I completely understand hoping for "bad" results. I'm currently waiting on 23andme results for my teenage daughter and am sort of hoping something will turn up. At least if you know what is wrong, you can take steps to address it.
  12. Seraphim, I did 23andme testing and got my results last month. I found that I had to do a LOT of digging to get the info I wanted. For celiac HLA genes, 23andme only reports DQ2.5 status, but using info on individual SNPs you can find out a lot more. I highly recommend SNPedia.com for all kinds of stuff, and geneticgenie.org for MTHFR info. Good luck - it...
  13. You can do a Open Original Shared Link genetic test for $99, although the shipping to the UK might make it quite a bit more expensive than that. It takes some detective work, but you can figure out your HLA-DQ2/8 status using the 23andme results.
  14. Lots of Paleo eaters use almond flour for baking, so if you Google, say, "banana bread paleo", you will find lots of recipes using almond flour and coconut flour, which are the only kinds of flour commonly used by Paleo eaters. Caution: never try to substitute almond or coconut flour for regular flour one-to-one in a recipe! The recipe needs to be adjusted...
  15. I'm a GI endoscopy nurse and spend much of my workday assisting with colonoscopies. Having your period is not a problem at all. Just tell the doctor you have your period and let them know if you have a tampon in (it can stay in during the colonoscopy).
